Mark Reizen- Dosifey's 5th act aria+scene from Khovanshchina

The great Ukrainian-born Jewish bass Mark Reizen (1895-1992) sings the 5th act aria ('Here, on this holy spot') of Dosifey, leader of the Old Believers, in Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina".
Taken from a late 1950's Mosfilm version of the opera (directed by Vera Stroyeva), this video captures Reizen towards the end of his distinguished stage career. The aria and following scene were severely abridged for the film, but the sonorous voice is in top form, and (as always) Reizen's singing and presence are absolutely authoritative.

This is one of the greatest opera films of all time, made by Vera Stroyeva, the director who made the brilliant Boris Godunov with Pirogov, Kozlovsky and Nelepp. This Khovanshchina came out on VHS only and still has not been released on DVD. A shame. You can find rare copies of the video floating around on eBay.

@ETNEWMAN1 I was lucky to find a DVD of this film on a Japanese label called "Dreamlife" at the HMV Japan website some years ago. It must be rather rare, as it appears to have disappeared from that site now, and I can't find it available anywhere else. It was done in the older format "16:9 letterbox," as it was before widescreen TVs were common, and the aspect ratio is very wide indeed...wider than the image shown on the video posted here.

I have called Corinth Films, who released it on VHS. They say someone else owns the copyright and they cannot re-release it on DVD. I have written to Mosfilm and received no answer. Maybe an interlibrary loan from your public library.

@xkird101 Of course Russian is a citizenship. It is that of people born in Russia - a country with clear geographical boundaries. But historically Russia was once an Empire that had sovereignty over most Slavic nations. And just as Spain, Gaul, and Britain were once all considered Roman, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Georgia came to be considered Russian.

@Agorante you cant get russian citizenship, but russiant wont call you russian, that is all i wanted to say, they will say - You have russian citizenship

Its odd how many "Russian" basses aren't Russian at all. The greatest "Russian" bass (IMHO) Alexander Kipnis was also a Ukranian Jew. The two most famous Russian Basses of recent years - Christoff and Ghaiurov - were both Bulgarian. Plishka is also Ukranian. I used to work in a company founded by Russians but with mostly Ukranian staff. These people don't really like each other. I think it has something to do with that genocide under Stalin.
