Welcome to Bueng Kan (บึงกาฬ), the ultra relaxing province in the Isaan region of Northeastern Thailand, on the Mekong River. It’s a place you can visit for relaxation, Isaan culture, and especially adventure and nature. One of the places I was most looking forward to visiting in Bueng Kan (บึงกาฬ) is a temple that’s built on and surrounding red mountain rock, called Wat Jetiyakhiri (วัดเจติยาคิรีวิหาร) or better known as Wat Phu Tok (วัดภูทอก) Temple - lonely mountain temple. #BuengKan #Thailand #WatPhuTok
The temple was originally founded by Ajahn Juan who loved the mountain for its dangerous wildlife such as tigers and snakes. Eventually monks build a series of shrines, and ladders, and wooden plank walkways around the rock outcrop, with seven layers. The 6th layer is the most thrilling and adventurous - there’s an entire circumference of wooden planks around the rock that are hand build and anchored into the rock. You’re around 300 meters high with nothing below you and just a wooden plank between you and falling all the way down. The 7th level just includes nature and views from the top.
Wat Phu Tok (วัดภูทอก) is without a doubt one of the most adventurous, slightly dangerous, and scary temples I’ve visited in Thailand and also one of the most beautiful and thrilling.
