I can really speak to the "Embrace the Suck" advice being super important. Getting good at making the best of a bad situation is hard but once you get good at that, it'll shock you what you're able to get away with. It really simplifies things sometimes when you do actually get to light similar situations. Great video Mark. This is great advice.

I honestly laugh at how crappy some people’s films are when they have high budget. I literally never use lights. 🤣 I’m always on the run.

Location lights, run n gun style, manual focusing, starts to feel so "wrong" when you get used to shooting in controlled conditions but this footage is straight up proof and reassuring that you can still get amazing shots on the go. I also love those focus pulls that are "delayed" between the two characters. It almost feels like a "character reveal". Great video like always!!!

Seeing interviewees facial expressions when talking about certain things is one of my favourite part of documentaries, but interesting to see your approach and I guess it makes it easier to focus on the interview than worrying about framing, lighting etc and might make the interviewee more comfortable as well. 👍🏾

Very informative! I have an event coming up in a couple of weeks and instead of just filming a vlog for my channel, I'm gonna try and do it documentary style. I already have some pre B-roll filmed to save some time that night so I can concentrate more on the main content of the film. I've never done it this way, so I'm pretty excited about it!!

One thing doing a lot of run and gun is the tip you suggested, accepting the brightness and the lighting won't look great. I have noticed that even hollywood films have shots where outside lighting is blown out. I love how you say that the raltionship between the two characters in that blown out shot example is most important.

Im really happy I found your channel. Ive been working on documenting work as an Astrophotographer for the last month or two ( not blue-hour stuff, real deep sky work) and I wrestle with the same thing every shoot it feels.. When to, and when not to use the external monitor. For my MF lenses it's obvious, but when I use my 24-105 f4 I have a tendency to just use the LCD and trust the AF. Whats your idea, or mental workflow here?
@markbone9 ай бұрын
I prefer seeing the screen bigger whenever I can. So even if AF isn’t an issue I want to be frame and compose my shots with the best screen

Great tips over here 👏🏻 thanks once more Mark. Quick question, how did you manage to get so clean audio straight from camera? Is it all perfectly capture by the mic or it involves some post production treatment? And if it’s all about the mic, which one you recommend 😉 thanks in advance 👊🏻

Okay so in the moments where you’re shooting with little to no light, whether it be inside or outside, how do you get this look without getting noise in the shadows? This may be a dumb question but are you doing the work in post to eliminate the noise or are you able to shoot it a certain way in camera where you don’t get so much noise in your shadows? In slog3 I seem to always have noise issues when I shoot without lights.

Spain is that lucky country... sunrises by the East coast (Mediterranean Sea), sunsets by the West coast (Atlantic Ocean). Similar for France, with more to the West and North-West and less to the East. Raymond Depardon, French photographer and documentary director, with decades of experience and thousands of images all over the World, simply told me : "It takes real scenography and a real director to create a documentary, the film-it-all attitude takes you nowhere.". How true !
