Thanks, Mark for all of your muzzle brake showcase and support videos. I have done my research with builds comparable to my 28 Nosler and your 4-port brake appears to fit our needs well. Given that this gun has more recoil than what I am used to and my dusty surroundings, your 4 port muzzle brake seems a good fit and makes a lot of sense to me. I look forward to getting one this week from the 4AW store and continuing this project. Again, thanks for your support content!

Informative and interesting as always. The duder who makes the Terminator brakes has a lot of practical test videos that really strongly demonstrate how rapidly the returns diminish with a greater number of ports on a brake. With most cartridges that aren't giant magnums, there is virtually zero difference between a 3 and a 5 port brake. Thanks again for the great content and I hope to put the brake I bought from you guys on my rifle here in the next few days.

I made a very simple 2 port for my 20" 308 and it completely transformed that rifle. I angled the ports back at an angle by side plunging a key seat cutter into my turned/baffled cylinder. Does throw a little grass and dirt on people next to me! Thanks for the video.

Well put Mark. I believe I know of the recent manufacturer test you are talking of. My first thought when watching it was they're aren't accounting for different volumes in gas for different cartridges. Another flaw in that test was their test rig was swinging so the effects of gravity weren't accounted for. Keep up the good work trying to broadcast more relevant information on the sport/hobby we love that is very much misunderstood.

I feel blessed. My lithgow .223 doesn't produce enough force to worry me and my .308 lithgow 105 Woomera came with it's own Lithgow matched brake. To me the problem is finding 'invisible ceracote' so I can use the 105 brake at the range.

Very informative video. Do you have a basic chart, from all your research, that shows which of your muzzle brakes are optimum for each caliber/cartridge available ?

"The more powder you've got, the more muzzle break you can use." This is absolutely right, and I can prove it. Newton's second law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. When you touch off a round, let's say you've got 72 grains of powder behind the bullet. That powder is going to convert (neglecting heat loss) exactly 72 grains of HOT GAS that wants to rush out the front. So more powder means more mass going out the front. This is also the reason why you can't ever have absolutely 0 recoil (despite what the braggarts like to say). You're pushing a 200 grain bullet out the front on top of that 72 grains of powder? Even if your muzzle break was 100% efficient (meaning you were able to turn all of that force around 180 degrees, which would also blast the shooter in the face) you would have 72 grains pushing the rifle FORWARD (because you reversed the gas) but you've still got 200 grains going forward, so you've still got a net 128 grains moving forward, and that's 128 grains of recoil coming back at you. The beauty of all this is that energy isn't what we care about so much as it is TIME (speed is distance X time). If you can slow down the escape of the gas, you get less recoil, regardless of which direction it goes. This is why suppressors create a braking effect too. More mass on the rifle also tends to slow things down (in terms of feet per second) which is really what makes "felt recoil" felt. A while back I had to do post a comment to that fact on MDT's test of their muzzle brakes because they were using a rotating (swinging) rig to try to show reduced recoil, which makes the results non-linear and difficult for people to understand. I saw a few weeks ago they released another video with the same rig and the same wrong conclusions. Oh well. Thanks Mark!

To add to my first comment, I'd say that muzzle brakes in general become more influential in reducing recoil as the ratio of weight of propellant rises in comparison to the projectile weight. So a muzzle brake on a .45 ACP won't be as much benefit as one on a .460 Weatherby (that pistol was a bad idea anyway!).

I prefer the longer slower push of a suppressor as well as no percussion from a brake. Think I've had too many concussions and shooting competitively quickly induces brain fog when using a brake.

It makes sense that the effectiveness of any brake design will fundamentally be directly related to the velocity and the total volume of gas exiting the muzzle, and based on the race car exhaust analogy, testing is the only way to actually establish the true effectiveness of a brake design. However, as in all endeavors, perfection vs investment will always be competing factors. In other words, in a real world scenario, it is highly optimistic to hope to find the perfect brake for any gun/load combination. And that should not be the goal. Rather it should be finding a brake that reasonably helps retard movement of the gun without adversely affecting accuracy.

Mark, Sam: How do you ensure the muzzle brake is true? e.g. the ports are directing the blast horizontally to the right and left (3 o'clock and 9 o'clock) Do you need to use shims?

I watched a video today testing various muzzle brakes using the same load. It seemed obvious to me that the best brake for, say, a.308 produces a lot less gas than, say, a .300 RUM, and the best brake for one may well not be the best for the other. And that's not taking into account all the other factors that you mention.
