Great lesson! I feel most of us who watch pro golfers are trying to create that same big backswing where the shaft is parallel to ground. But what we don’t realize is that pros are so flexible and athletic so it is their body that turn that much to make that backswing. We always try to make it with the wrist which when you “hinge”, the lead wrist is cupped to create issues.

Been playing 30 years and never had a coach explain this too me before. thank you simplifying what I have been making complicated for years. When you see the set up it makes perfect sense, off to practice in the back garden.

Mark, your content over recent weeks/months has been extremely useful and pertinent. This one is perhaps the best of the lot as far as it is relevant to my game. I've just had a practice session adopting this less hinging feel and I notice two things: more centre strikes, better contact (less fat shots). Tomorrow I'm playing in a comp, so we'll see how it goes.

MARK ! this is SOOOO true, for years my wrists were always extended, not because i was consiosuly trying to "set" my wrists it just happened, when i tried to feel like i had no wrist set at all and thus not over extending it made a big difference, AND on the video play back my wrists still looked like they were "set" yet the feeling was no set at all !!!! not sure why this wasnt picked by in my many many golf lessons, i basically worked it out myself online and now ive just seen your video !!!! haha perfect thanks !

Excellent job Mark in how to set the wrists properly in the golf swing! In accomplishing a proper wrist set I am pushing the butt end of the club down with the meaty part of my left hand in the backswing. After viewing this video, I discovered what I was doing wrong was not extending my arms out far enough before I started this gradual setting process. Thanks for the help Mark!

Spot on, Mark. Great insight into how to correctly use the wrists in the swing. The lack of wrist hinge reminds me very much of Cam Young who keeps his wrist set to a minimum yet generates significant club head speed. 👍🙌💪

I have definitely played around with this and I’ve stopped “extending” and setting those wrists. I like feeling that I’m much more ulnar on the backswing with that wrist flattened because of that turn feel… For me, that was “body is an engine” kind of revelation for me! Thanks for explaining why that works Mark! So insightful…and simple!!!

I once took a golf lesson and this was the first thing the coach wanted to fix, I didn't really understand what he was saying until I watched your video. To me I thought he wanted me to have a shorter back swing but now I understand what he meant after you explained it. I hinge my wrists a lot and my arm does collapse onto my chest as you explain at around 7:50, He told me to use the swingyd aid. I used it for a while but didn't know what I was fixing, now knowing what I need to do I think I can fix it without the aid doing the exercises you provided.

Mark, I am a new subscriber to your website from Texas. I thoroughly enjoy your teaching. I don't know if you address this question in any of your videos, but I thought I would give it a go. What is your thought on lifting my left heel in my backswing? I do it mostly when I swing a driver, but tend to keep it on the ground while hitting irons. I have rotation issues due to knee and hip replacements and I want to protect my back. What are your suggestions as to preventing a sway if I do this heel lifting?
@MarkCrossfield
@MarkCrossfield 10 ай бұрын
Lifting the heel is a good thing, no issues with it. As for the sway you need to make sure you load back into that lead foot before you finish your backswing 👍

Thank you Mark. I have golfed on and off for 40 years. I have lost count of the number of times I've tried to get the right feel of the wrist break, even asking a teaching pro "Is it like this or like this ?" whilst doing what felt different but I guess looked the same as I never got a good answer. You have clarified how it should feel in just 9 and a half minutes. Somebody tell Lou to listen to what you say as you really know your stuff !

I've always struggled with too much wrist cupping. And this is because I'm doing too much with my wrists as well. Less is more with my backswing.

In a nutshell are you saying a flatter lead wrist is better than to much wrist hinge ?. Is it ok then to flatten the lead wrist from the start of the takeaway ?. It’s all confusing as I’ve had lessons and all teach different takeaways 😢

Mark, I have a hard time understanding the benefits of having to flatten the lead wrist during the swing. I get stuck on the thought that it’s a compensation to square the face for a slightly too weak grip. I can’t figure out what I’m missing because that flattening move seems to be considered universally right and good. I ask also because, for me, a slightly cupped wrist with a stronger grip feels more comfortable and stable vs when I go weaker and then flatten I “feel” like I have to do more and get in a position that “feels” like I am going to hurt my lead wrist at impact..
@darrylgrundy3585
@darrylgrundy3585 10 ай бұрын
Try and get into an impact position with a cupped wrist, you can't hit a ball like that so if you have a cupped wrist coming into downswing you better be good at getting rid of it

I bow the wrist that in my mind feels like I set the wrist. So bow the wrist and the club is going very inside - any tips to solve this 20 year old habit of no wrist set at all, but only bow ?
@Paul-lm5gv
@Paul-lm5gv 10 ай бұрын
You don't take the club back all the way, yet obviously you get a lot out of the shot. I find that if I take a 3/4 swing, (at age 75) the ball just doesn't go as far as - yes - setting the wrists further back with a full back swing!
