Mark, my good man. I've been doing this for years. Here's a tip for you. Invest in a "Dry-Erase" marker. Works just the same but wipes right off the ball and right off your club and probably right off your screen. Save your Sharpie for permanently marking your ball. Get a dry-erase as a "training aid".

It’s great to see you doing more in depth training on this concept. You’ve already taught us about de-lofting a bit. Playing with this concept at the range has transformed my game and my striking. These tips are pure gold!!! With my better strike I can now actually aim better. And that’s leads to actually thinking about where I want to hit the ball and where are my better misses. I’m able to play the game now!! There’s more enjoyment!! One thing leads to another. Thank you!!!

One of the most simple yet effective tips I've seen! Applied this to my game and its helped dramatically. Used to struggle with my wrists flicking through through impact and caused fat, thins you name it. Also used to hook the ball terribly as I was firing my hips enough. This has got me hitting the ball first, and might I say "flushing it" with straighter ball flights. Also got a lot more distance. Great video Mark 👍

Mark … Great video! After watching your video, getting a Sharpie marker, and spending a few sessions at the (iron) range, my iron strikes are much, much better. I am hitting the ball higher, further, and (most importantly) much more consistently. The mental mindset is to hit the ball about half way up the club face … and voila! Before, I thinned the ball way too frequently; now, I hit the ball on the middle of the face almost all of the time!

I’m definitely one for adding loft! Will give this a go for sure. I’ve got a question about what sort of vertical launch we should be getting with certain clubs. Is there a cheat sheet or general rule of thumb for best launch angle. For example, my 7i is 27d static loft (strong af - thanks callaway 😂), but what should I be aiming for as a vertical launch angle with that? Is there a threshold to aim for for other clubs? Hopefully I’m making some sense 😂

I have been doing this only in reverse to your method for the past year. I place a dot on each ball with a sharpie pen 5p coin size, I place each balls dot at the ideal strike area then swing, leaving a transfer onto my club. These are shag bag balls in my club practice area, dot really started as away to identify my balls during collection, but the transfers have been great! It also leave it quicker to swap clubs through my bag. I try to make this drill a monthly one to, using my R10 to record shot data and video my swing on every shot. Love watching and feeling a well flushed hit iron, just need to see more during club tournaments😳

Just imagining the dot comfortably carried the greenside bunker I aim at when out with some practice balls - but I would say the biggest improvement was on those annoying 15-20 yard shove & run shots round the green with the PW or SW. Zero duffs and a much better grouping! Definitely worth another mention when out doing short-game work.

I have a hard time reconciling the 'delofting' approach for irons vs letting the clubhead pass your hands. These seem like two opposites to me. I get that there's more than one way to square the clubface. And I do find that clubhead passing my hands works well when I just can't get rid of the slice/pushes. But it makes me wonder if I'm missing something with the lower half?

Good one Mark! What would you say to someone who may be de-lofting too much? I was recently getting fit for new irons (moving from game improvement to players) as I wanted more spin and track man showed that my dynamic loft is very low. 6-iron attack angle of -3 and dynamic loft of 15-17 on a 31degree iron. Swing speed about 85 and ball speed around 125 and spin was 4500. Would love some ideas of how to get spin up.

Hey Mark. would love a video on flyers! I have heard you before when testing "powerful", "game improvement" irons that you sometimes get a flyer which goes miles and that's why you wouldn't play them. I have Wilson C200 off the shelf for £200 from AG based on your review. But stop at a 7 iron then I also have a 7 icon Cobra RAD. I much prefer the Cobra and hit it better but probably 1 in 8 seem light flyers. I use Garmin and it averages 169 yards but it's gone over 200 lots and over 220 an this isn't just the ground conditions

This is crazy… CRAZY AWESOME!!! I never thought to put a dot at the top of my iron. I could definitely use this drill with my wedges when I’m hitting full-ish shots with them! I find a dramatic drop off in distance when I go from my iron shots versus hitting 100 yard shots. The gap is not only staggering, but confounding! Thank you Mark!!! I’m definitely gonna earmark some time for the range for this…

Hi mark, Tommy fleetwood sets up with his lead arm in line with the club shaft on all clubs. This also helps to de loft the club. I don’t think a lot of amateurs know this fact with de lofting the club. If you get all other things right in your swing this makes a big difference in power. I never really noticed it until a yank did a video on Tommys swing and pointed his club position at address. This is a big reason why amateurs can’t play with bladed clubs. Very good video. All pga pros who teach, should point this out for those who have lessons.

I have a variation on this marking. I mark my balls with a big black stripe. As well as an alignment aid on tee shots and putts, it helps with strike and low point control. With a 7 iron I want to see a mark on at least the 5th groove, preferably higher. Definitely not on the first groove and ideally not the second one either. So I can have a massive miss by 3 grooves and the ball will still be on the green. I will, though, note that my low point control was poor and figure out what i need to do better on the next shot.

Ok, as usual Mark a great fix and something that has been causing me issues out of the blue this past month. I have been using this "thought" and it has been working. Now the issue is I am holding on too long and not releasing. Any suggestions to combine this and a release "thought" to get best of both worlds ? Andrew Rice knows I take things to obsession with a fix and then he needs to fix the fix :-)

The reason why so many struggle with iron strikes is this “de-lofting” concept. If you can hit your 9 iron cleanly, and you want more distance without changing your grip, swing or ball position, simply club-up 2-3 and choke up on the grip until your swing improves. It’s a total hack, I know. But, it really works.

You don't need a marker, just use painters tape or other semi-adhering tape piece. If you just lightly push it on the club face it also tells you how good the strike was. I use two inch wide tape on my driver drills and it gives me instant feedback on strike position. And it does not ruin your whitewall :D

Please answer this. I'm a pretty good golfer, but I still haven't ever figured this out. Do I swing the club with both hands or do I swing with my lead arm. I transfer my weight, obviously but it seems like some players just pound it with both hands. When I do this I hit a lot of fat shots. I play better when I use my lead arm more, but as I've aged, I don't have any power.

I honest to god think that before any person that tries to learn how to play golf, needs to watch a video on how the clubs are supposed to work. For years I had no idea why I would constantly chunk shots or hit them thin despite reading tips, drills etc.., "Keeps weight like this, turn your head like that, have your arms like this". If you can understand how the club is supposed to work, it makes trying to understand how to swing the club so much easier.
