Market Town of Tavistock in Devon - Americans visit England

3 жыл бұрынWe think Tavistock might be one of the best places to stay in Devon. It certainly has been a favourite of ours! Not only because it is a beautiful ancient market town with plenty of wonderful places to explore in the town centre, but also because it is adjacent to the fabulous Dartmoor National Park and countless wonderful places to visit in both Devon and Cornwall are within easy driving distance. Tavistock has many fond memories for me. When ever we went on holiday as a child at a farm at Boasley cross on Dartmooor, we used to go to Tavistock, on king street where there was a toy shop. I LOVED it. Every holiday I'd save up my holiday money and go there and buy a model car.

Oh wow! I LOVE when people tell me their nostalgic stories of what they remember as it pertains to my videos. We really love Dartmoor and Tavistock. I hope we can go back this summer! Ian used to collect Dinky toys when he was a boy in Britain.... do you remember those? Of course, I've never heard of them ;-)

Exactly! I actually bought tea towels in September because they are not common here in the states, and I wanted to use them for subscriber gifts. I did a giveaway in November for American subscribers❤️

Seriously, if you want to explore the West Country, I highly recommend staying in Tavistock!! I'm hoping all goes well with the end of the latest lockdown and UK's transition to more travel activities in the coming months!

Sorry i'm late guys, it's just gone a quarter past midnight here, as i've been playing catch up with videos on KZfaq channels i follow. It's lovely seeing late summer views of Devon though. Hopefully we'll all be out of lockdown by the summertime. I miss the warmth, and the freedom to drive around the country freely. But i have to say, i'm looking forward to Tuesday's Cornish Pasty video... i just love Cornish Pasties... 😋 Cheers guys. 😉

Yes it was the monks and afternoon tea was an idea brought about by the 7th duchess of Bedford because the gap between breakfast and dinner (8.00 in evening) was too big . We love our food in Devon. From a Tavi lass x

Its a beautiful part of Devon. I recommend if you're dartmooring, visiting Okehampton castle on the outskirts. The atmosphere is superb.

When Tavistock way, (many years ago), I think I mostly enjoyed Morwellham Quay, which is a one-time copper port on the Tamar - I believe it was briefly the world's largest Copper Port...I fondly recall a fascinating train ride round part of the copper mine, and a really good visit to the working village...there was also a horse-drawn ride or two, and the chance to explore a raised railway and see some fascinating aqueducts and water wheels...I've googled and it appears to be still there - might be worth a visit in happier times to come...I'm still looking forward to the great Pasty denouement first though!

There are SO MANY great things in that area. I could stay in Tavistock for months and not get bored! You bring up a good point... in my research I discovered that Tavistock was an ancient stannary (had never heard of that word before!) and manage tin coinage. Lots of mining in that area! Great video. I recommend the walk up to the old railway viaduct with a lovely view over the town - then off to the Tavi friar for a delicious chippy!

We can't wait to get back to Scotland! Our goal is to spend each summer in Britain so that we have plenty of time to wander about! In 2020 we spent 5 weeks in the UK, but 2 of course were in quarantine! Our travels included Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wales. All wonderful places to explore! Thanks for joining the Magenta Otter Tribe! If your boys like otters, I have some wonderful otter videos you can share with them ;-) I definitely want to get to Mull sometime and see the wild otters there!

I live in Cornwall and go to Tavistock quite a lot because I like very strong cheddar cheese and the cheese shop just outside the market sells one which almost blows my head off. I was born in Devon, Barnstaple but have to be very careful who I tell because I am an "emmet" and a "grockle" (if you're a Devon person living in Cornwall, both are a very dangerous things to be) I could be banished across the Taymer Bridge if the wrong person found out.

But now that I spent some time in Cornwall (you can check out my Cornwall vlogs if you are interested, I"d love to hear your feedback and comments!)... AND I watched the movie Fisherman's Friends, I have some idea! I remember them distrusting emmets and wanting to toss many back across the Tamar! Thanks so much for your comment. Very nicely presented and put together. Relaxing viewing. It's nice to hear American accents in Britain. I've been to Japan, the Philippines and Malaysia but I've never been to Tavistock, it's too far away from where I live!

I've been to tavistock market and I thought it was the most interesting in all England....but I have seen a cute one in Bath I think...or it might have been Bristol.. Bridport street market was quite good too..

The majority of our small towns hold a market once a week x A lot of them would of once held a cattle market unfortunately a lot of these are no longer although the original sites are still in use as markets ! English food is divine I am being bias but we also travel a lot to European countries and beyond so these delicious recipes are used a lot in Britain x

Well, it's not Morocco, but I think you should enjoy a stroll along the river walk and a tasty lunch with hummus and falafel at Church Lane! Much easier to get to than Morocco ;-)

Went to Morwellham Quay just outside Tavistock several years ago on a school visit. We even went into the old mine on the train. It was good. But I grew up on the edge of Dartmoor near Okehampton. Used to call Tavistock Tavy. It is a nice place and used to go through it on a day trip to Dartmoor. But we would visit anywhere on Dartmoor for a day trip and have a picnic. We would take all our rubbish home like the quote 'Leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but photos' A Devon Pasty is just as good as a Cornish pasty. The Devon pasty is even mentioned in the Magna Carta. There always has been rivalry over who invented it first. I personally don't like it as I don't like beef. But other flavour pasties are very nice.

@@MagentaOtterTravels Yes I did see the cheese vending machine video. Like you I love cheese. Tavy is just pronounced Tav ( like in Tavistock) then eee. So it would look like Tavee. We did the same for Okehampton (Oakee) and Tiverton (Tivee). It was how we used to shorten the town names. There is a picture somewhere of most of the names in Devon that have been renamed by the locals.

What a lovely tour of Tavistock - and good to have narration from both of you. We called in on Tavistock a couple of times on our 100-mile Devon coast-to-coast cycle ride, and I'm sorry that we missed much of the glorious detail you discovered! But we did get a superb view of the town from the old railway viaduct, which is now part of the Drake's Trail walking and cycling route from Tavistock to Plymouth www.sustrans.org.uk/find-a-route-on-the-national-cycle-network/devon-coast-to-coast/ Thank you for another interesting vlog.

Yes, Ian really should do more narration! He is the brains of the outfit, and knows all the history and geography. But he HATES talking on camera... so we have that to contend with! Nice little vlog. Just a few things, the canal goes to Morwellham and on to the Tamar River which eventually does go to Plymouth. It's a great little walk, as is the old railway line (upon which Queen Victoria stopped her train so she could sleep). At one point your husband stood in almost the same point as General Eisenhower, who addressed the troops before they left for D-Day, he and the joint chiefs including Field Marshal Montgomery partly planned the invasion at Abbotsfield Hall on the outskirts of town, and thousands of GI's were camped around the area. As a Cornishman I can say Tavistock is the only place in Devon where a decent attempt at a pasty can be found, though that thing you called a 'cream tea'...jam then cream! Your hotel is a stones throw from my house, if you're interested in the country around the town I have a few videos filmed within a few miles, no obligation :)

Thanks for sharing that. I had learned that the Helford estuary had played a significant role in the invasion when investigating Trebah Gardens (unfortunately we didn't make it but will on a future visit) but didn't know about the history relating to this area. You are very fortunate to live in this area. Compared to where we live in Texas it is gorgeous.

@@MagentaOtterTravels Thank you, my videos are a little rough and ready being more for the outdoor community but I try to convey history (my passion) along with scenery. If you should return, there are otters on the river though rarely seen in the town.

@@ians3586 My pleasure, the US troops were stationed throughout Devon and Cornwall. The US Army 29th Infantry Division were stationed in the Tavistock area, and the 4th and 28th Division were based around my village in Cornwall. The 4th and 29th were on the first landings. The 115th Field hospital was also just outside of town and took some of the first US casualties from D-Day, the boxer Joe Louis came to visit them.

I'm on the same wavelength... I don't like to buy "stuff" at the markets. But I did buy tea towels for my Subscriber Giveaway, and some greeting cards (lovely, with local photography) and of course... FOOD!

2:08 - dukes of Bedford rather than dukes of Tavistock. Other than the Duke of Tavistock Bed & Breakfast, in Tavistock, there never have been dukes of Tavistock. Subsidiary title of dukes of Bedford is Marquess of Tavistock, which is a title held by the eldest son of any duke of Bedford as a courtesy. Family name of the current dukes of Bedford to bear that title is Russell.

It is a strange relationship that exists between us English ( and the rest of my fellow Britons ) and North Americans. We can`t wait to get over there to see the new, whilst many of them can`t wait to get over here to see the old ( `Oh, how incredibly old.` But oh no - `Oh, how incredibly new.` ) But there`s more to Europe than England and more to olde Europe than olde England - just as there is more to North America than Canada and the United States of America. A more or less common language comes to our aid but sometimes one has to get a little uncomfortable and explore things at the outliers if not the extremities - otherwise few of us are ever going to find out what its like to be in a foreigners land.

@@MagentaOtterTravels You are fortunate. I have only ever been to The `States once - to New York City in 1992. I would love to go again for many reasons, not least to see a New England Autumn. In truth, if I were as free a bird as I would like to be I would spend one year in North America, in the exact middle of the continent, in order to experience the extreme heat of the Summer ( it being 1500 miles away from the Ocean either side ) and the extreme cold and snow of the Winter - for the same reason and conditions. It has not escaped my notice, in listening to your videos, that you have sojourned more widely than I have. My Great Aunt Elisabeth was an Irish Lass from Co Mayo who ended up ( I`m told ) working for US Intelligence in a place called Arlington, Va ? If my memory serves me well, upon visiting the house where Elisabeth died in 1986 we found a ticket for the sea voyage between Boston, Ma and Dublin, Ireland. My Mum and my Great Aunt never met. But how my mum wept.... Back in the day it used to take a week for letters to be exchanged between my Mum amd my Great Aunt. God bless you and your family.

@@welshrarebit1153 I enjoyed the rarebit! I can't really give you a foodie hub recommendation in Devon. We love staying in Tavistock because it's a great base for exploring Dartmoor as well as Devon and Cornwall. I also had one of my favorite lunches ever in the small village of Lustleigh. I published videos about both of those places. If you have trouble finding them, let me know and I will send you links.

I think the various titles are because the aristocratic families have several estates which come with titles. The Prince of Wales is known in Scotland as the Duke of Rothesay, for instance.

My favourite pasty shop in Cornwall is "Tasty Pasties" in Bude....they do a pasty to suit everybody... Fruit ones cheese ones Lamb ones...vegetarian ones..the list is long..

I don't think that map of Drake's voyage is very accurate. He sailed across Canada, through the Sahara Desert and across the European Mainland, stopping off at Western Australia before it was discovered. No wonder he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I

I don't know what to think! I asked a local before I filmed the river scene, so I would say it correctly. But since publishing, two people (including you) have said I pronounced it incorrectly. And one person who grew up in the area said I was right. So either I'm losing my mind... or this is one of those Bath or Scone things... where Brits don't all agree on how it should be pronounced! Either way... I'm just an ignorant American doing my level best 😉

@@MagentaOtterTravels There are two villages nearby. Peter Tavy and Mary Tavy. They are both pronounced Tay - Vee. I live in Devon and have never heard the river called Tavvy.

This is complicated to answer. First of all, when you see my videos you have to remember it was SEPTEMBER of 2020. At that point, the infection rate in Cornwall and Devon were low, and the UK variant of covid hadn't been discovered. Also, we were outside almost all the time... and when they were outside, people back then really didn't wear masks. We did, but we were the weirdos! haha That being said, I did have a couple bad experiences with people in stores/restaurants not praticising sufficient safety measures. I complain about that in my Battle of the Scones video ;-)
