When I was a kid in the 1970's my grandma strung a large button on a string and showed me how to spin it. I grew up kind of poor and my siblings and I didn't get a lot of toys for Christmas or on our birthdays, so that button and string toy was a kind of cool toy back then. I haven seen anyone play with a button and string toy since then. Now seeing that same kind of device being converted to a centrifuge is awesome.

Feeling nostalgic as that spinning thing is called chakkarghinni here in India. It is a common toy in rural areas. Mind blowing and super ingenious to create such an awesome device using simple materials. Here in India we had an inter-school science expo where we had a seminar showing us how to make the microscope from the video. This shows the influence that they have made around the world. Hats off to them 👏👏

It wasnt invented at all in stanford, they just innovated on an ancient microscope design known as a leeuwenhoek single sphere lens microscope. There is a massive difference between inventing something and innovating upon sonething, Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek deserves all the credit for the original design as well as over 100 microscope patents that HE INVENTED from 1640 - 1723 and is recognized as the father of microscopy and microbiology.

Zacharias Janssen is also credited for making one of the first microscopes but there isnt a clear date as to when. Only that he did it "around 1600."

@@Charles37400 i'll defer to the one who invented more than 100 different microscope patents to the one who "supposedly" only made one, because for all we know it was stolen. there were also variations of microscopes invented by the church for transcription but since they didn't zoom into microscopic levels they dont really count.

For people who own personal digital cutters like a Brother Scan N Cut, cricut, cameo, etc the foldscope could be sold / downloaded as a .SVG to be cutout by anyone with one of these types of machines. The lens and a light source are all that remains for the physical portion of it. Or use the built-in scanner on the ScanNCut to make a cut-to-data version of the paper portion of it. Ditto for the disc portion of the centrifuge.

I think I better clarify that I don't live in the USA, because something tells me you'll assume I'm an illegal immigrant. 😮 Do you have any idea about how much malaria treatment costs? From 0.50 to 6.00 USD per person, and if the sick poor people can't afford to pay this much, there are organizations around the world that will. It's cheap. Very cheap. The equipment created by these guys replaces the expensive, hard to carry and energy demanding telescopes and centrifuges DOCTORS carry to help people who live in humble places. I proudly say that I have participated in one of the foldscope camps, and it is one of the things that has changed the way I look at world. Thank you Prof. Manu Prakash for this brilliant invention. Malaria keeps the rain forest from being completely destroyed. Corporations are less likely to fund construction projects in malaria infested areas. Stop development of the vaccine and leave some land for the animals and plants.
