Nice harvest Mark! Growing up we never washed potatoes but rubbed off the dirt and stored them in peck baskets in our "cold cellar" as we called it. We also "robbed" our potatoes early in the growing season for "new potatoes" to be cooked and served with parsley and butter, a real treat as you said! It was considered a poor harvest if we ran out of potatoes and had to buy some before the next harvest. Being Pennsylvania Dutch we had potatoes in one form or another almost every day. One of the chores after school was to wash and peel potatoes for that night's supper. To this day I own a vegetable brush and scrub my potatoes before cooking.

I love the smaller potatoes . I quarter them add a diced onion then drizzle with olive oil salt and pepper roast in oven till golden . Top with fresh finely chopped parsley . Great eating.

My horticulture teacher use to say, dirt is what you bring into the house on your mother's kitchen floor from your shoes, soil is what you grow in.

Thanks for the video on harvesting your potatoes. I did this over the weekend (first time I have grown potatoes) and I was pleased with the harvest. Probably one of my favorite things I grew this year...I liked the anticipation of what's under the ground.

I tried growing potatoes years ago, but between the voles and potato beetles oy vey. I gave up. You're given inspiration to maybe try again. Beautiful harvest 👍

Thanks Mark for sharing your knowledge about harvesting potatoes. It makes alot of sense to me. I love Yukon potatoes myself. We never used to wash or cure our potatoes when I was growing up. Ours would shrivel and we lose alot of potatoes. They were stored in a cool dark place, but we never followed any particular steps for harvesting. I am learning so much watching your channel. Thank you.

Good afternoon Mark 😊 thankyou so very much for making yet another great video and sharing it with us.lts always a good thing to see how other people store there potatoes.like you we don't use a folk to dig ours out ...we'll l don't lol its nice to get your hands in there and feel the soil,apart from the smell of freshly cut grass which is absolutely divine and after the rain on the earth is a fabulous smell.Love the way Holly is patrolling the place while your videoing...l would have to have that picture framed of her at the end,what a beauty she is.All the very best Mark 🌱🌱🌱💕🇬🇧uk

Thanks for this. I like to wash mine too. Glad to know that is OK to do. Great info. Wish I had some kind of more humid environment for storage, but I dont have anywhere near that amount and will probably cook them sooner than later.

Awesome video, my winter potatoes are about 3 weeks away from harvest. Fortunately I am able to plant twice a year here in Pretoria in South Africa. Hardly ever drops below 10 degrees celcius here, even in the heart of winter with Frost being a rarity once a decade.

Have you ever tried growing a second crop the same year? I have a few potatoes that had got above the ground before harvest and sprouted. I was thinking of planting them to see what would happen. I have about 75 or so days before first frost. Was thinking of trying it in my high tunnel. Just an experiment. What are your thoughts on this? This year was my first year to grow potatoes and they did good. Happy Gardening

Hi! I'd give it a shot. I've never grown 2 potato crops in one year, but I think it's worth trying and seeing what happens. I would use straw to insulate the ground from all the heat of this time of year. You never know until you give it a shot though. If you do and don't mind, let me know how it works out for you. Great video - but you caught me off guard with a 4 PM post! LOL. I was out fertilizing the lawn. Yukon Gold is my favorite potato - excellent buttery flavor. Not something I can plant here in North Georgia zone 7b as the clay soil is just too dense and hard. Cheers, Mark!

I wish the harvest would have been more, but I didn't water at all. I had the irrigation designer at the farm today to design a system for the garden. I don’t eat a lot of potatoes but harvesting them looks so satisfying. Nothing against potatoes, though. Yukon gold are my favorite, so maybe next year. But your potatoes look beautiful!

Hey Michael! Good to hear from you! Potatoes.....The nice thing about them is there are just so many ways you can prepare them. My favorite is just boil them in there skins, add butter and parsley and the Yukon Golds are incredible that way. Another way I like is to cube them, cube beets, sprinkle them with fresh Rosemary and than a good olive oil and roast them. Just incredible! How's your garden doing so far this year? Hi! Harvest.....Not as much as I would have liked, but I guess for as dry as it's been I should be happy. Yukon's in my opinion have by far the best flavor. I hope your harvest is huge! Be very careful when digging them up. I just added the select and store seed potatoes to my excel spreadsheet of videos to do in the future. What area of the country are you located? You use from the jar the same way with your butter and parsley or Parmigiano cheese crusted potatoes. Or Mexican potatoes.

Our Early potatoes are Arans or Pentlands, Scottish potatoes. The harvest is good but the tatties are moderately large. Moran taing!

Hi Mark, Not sure you'll see this or respond since it's now 2 months after you posted your video. Do you grow yams/sweet potatoes? Do you know why the red skin white yams are so expensive? I just bought 2 medium sized red skins and it was Cdn $6.10 at the grocery store. Craziness! Maybe I was overcharged. 2 larger orange yams were only Cdn $2.70. I love both and both are uniquely different.

@@marksgardenlife5971 I use the smallest potatoes, clean, if your doing alot the dishwasher work well no heat cycle. I use large mouth jars fill and 1 teaspoon of canning salt no iodine salt, then fill the jar with hot boiling water and put your lids on. You'll need a pressure cooker at 10 pounds of pressure for 40 min. Turn your heat of let completely cool of pressure and remove for jars to cool and lids well sell. The longer cycled potatoes, kennebec, russets, and Yukon golds can well the reds get soft. I'M 3 generation doing this just extends your season, some of those small potatoes save for next year's seed potatoes. There are many recipes to use theses from the jars.

Hi Mark! What a beautiful amount of potatoes 🥔 you got this year, it is so satisfying to see all of it. Thank you for going through the process of making them last long in storage. I will be plating some this spring and in pots as well to see how they do in pots. Holly 🐕 is soo cute she is always wanting to be on camera haha 😆 i would love to have a dog like her. I was wondering if you have a drone if you would ever take a video shot of the your area i love looking at places that looks soo green and beautiful and to see how big your garden is.😁 Thank you for this great video. Hi Gabriel! It wasn't as many as I would have normally gotten, but it's been dry here and I didn't water them at all so four hundred plus pounds wasn't to bad. Holly is cute, but also at the terrible two's stage. lol I'm going to buy a drone as soon as I get a chance to read up on them and learn a little, so yes, there will be some "from the sky" images being used at some point. Hi Gabriel! Your comments........And I love getting them! Gabriel, that's only a small possibility (very small) that my channel would get that big that I couldn't read all the comments. Peoples comments, input is extremely important to me. I can tell how I'm doing, get new ideas, and I just like "meeting" and talking to people anyway. I never thought when I started doing this I would talking to people in Australia, let alone many other countries besides all over the USA. That's just incredible to me. I say down in the greenhouse because it's about a quarter mile down from the house and I'm sitting in my upstairs den/ library off my bedroom right now on my computer. (Its's 5:45am) A visit to the US......I would love to meet you and can give you a tour of the farm and since you like gardening so much, within an hour, there are 4 major Dupont estate gardens and within 20 minutes we have Ladew Topiary Gardens too, so much to see.
