Expect the locking mechanism on the K31. It has only two locking lugs. If one gets hairline cracks this will get *very* dangerous for the one who fires the gun. Many modern weapons have 3 or more locking lugs which are also much stronger.

I'm from Switzerland. I never ever heard that a locking mechanism cracks. I have 5 different straight pull k31+11 all absolutely accurate excellent quality.

A carbine K31 variant? Both the K11 and K31 are carbines. I've owned a K31 and two 1889's. The 1889's are my favorite as they are a true Schmidt-Rubin and the K31's really aren't being a total redesign. As a reloader the 1889 is also cheaper to shoot tha the K31, lighter loads so less powder, I only shoot cast bullets, and due to the light loads my brass lasts forever.

Same here, its interesting how these guns are probably the closest to the periphery of antique status when reservists were using them up till 58.

@William Warner Lots of surplus rifles were sporterized in the 50's and 60's. I only know of the six k31's in 308 made by Martin B Retting as being desirable and still maintaining military specifications. I think they were built from factory surplus parts, not pre-assembled rifles.

All the ones I have seen for the 96/11 were braze on done by the Swiss Gun Shops. Yes the link is for a new style, yet at ranges in Switzerland the ones on older gentleman’s rifles stand from the 50-70’s, lots of those guns also in the shops or gun shows in Switzerland back in the 90’s that I was going to.

I'd only invest into weapons that could handle modern ammunition. Even though you could not utilize it under current laws, in the event of invasion, I'd want something that I could safely defend the crown with.

The Swiss 1911 long rifle, 96/11, and K11 are all designed around the (surprise) GP11 service cartridge that was designed in 1911. This is the same cartridge that the K31 fires, thus there is no need to download for these rifles. I would not go about rechambering them in magnum cartridges though.

​@@huntercompton9650 No, the 96/11 is a 1896 receiver. The 1911 is a the same 1896 receiver design. Which means they were designed around the GP90 which was less hot. Thus the lugs on the bolt, though stronger than the 1889, aren't as strong as the k31. The muzzle velocity of GP90 is 1968 ft/s The muzzle velocity of GP11 is 2560 ft/s Nearly 10,000 psi difference.

@@fochdischitt3561 Yes, and the 96/11, 1911 and K11 were all designed to fire the GP11 cartridge that you just listed. The issue with firing GP11 or similar commercial ammo in a 89/96 rifle is not the action, it is the barrel, which because it was cut for the larger bullet of the GP90 cartridge will suffer gas blowby in the throat, reducing accuracy. There is a reason that the 89/96 rifles are almost never found, as they were all re-barreled to accept the GP11 cartridge and became 96/11s.

@@fochdischitt3561 Absolute bullshit do your research! the 1911 was designed for the GP11 which was introduced in 1911! 1889's have very tight bores and even downloading them I wouldn't make a habit of shooting .308" jacketed bullets. Both of mine slug at .302-.303" I shoot soft cast lead bullets sized to .308".

@@huntercompton9650 While this is true it is well known that the rear locking lugs of the 1889 and 96/11 make the action weaker than the middle lugs of the 1911 and front lugs of the K31. An 1889 or 96/11 subjected to too much GP11 ammo will experience locking lug set back and peening. If one had a super slow motion video of GP11 being fired in a 1889 or 96/11 you would be able to see the bolt flex. Also while the paper patched GP90 is larger in diameter ".323" vs the GP11 ".3075" the bores of 1889 rifles are much tighter and also use progressive rifling also known as gain twist, ie the twist rate gets faster the further the .bullet moves down the barrel. I have personally seen 1889's with sheared locking lugs from firing too much GP11, I personally would not fire GP11 or .308" jacketed bullets in an 1889 or 96/11.

There is a book on the Swiss Straight pulls wrote by Vetter, it has a list of dates matching to serial number, the books are rare, in German, and sell for around $600.00.

I bought a K31 with a nice smooth walnut stock about a year ago for $500 from an older guy with 150 rounds of GP11 ammo. He was needing room in his safe and I really lucked out. The deals are out there, you just need to hunt them down.

They're still out there. Some not as nice as others. I got a 1957 k31 that looks like it's unissued. Got it and a 1943 with canton stickers for $1050 last year. Got a K00/11 "P" series on the way as well. Less than 1300 "p" series 1900's were made.

You can also tell how heavily shot out the barrels are by comparing the lands within the first 1 inch of the chamber to the muzzle. They'll still shoot good but the bullet can yaw a bit. Just reserve the ones with good rifling for long range shooting.

I think at least the K31 does have a free floating barrel, but not 100% sure. And no, those rifles were all bolt action. There are a number of prototypes made by SIG and probably other companies during the 20s and 30 for semi- automatic rifles. All bolt actions, as for Automatic, they were replaced by the StgW57 in 1957, some were imported to the USA as the AMT in .308, the Swiss kept the 7.5x55 until 1990 and they moved to a .223 style ammo, heavier bullet and packs a little more power still designed for hitting. 6” plate at 300 mtr.

The barrels are for the most part free floating, there is a copper/brass bushing around the barrel on the front of the stock. My K31 is glass bedded and free floating, and sports the Original Swiss competition diopter.

Those tags are under the butt plate of most Swiss arms, with the StgW57, and StgW90 there is a card holder on the outside that holds the info slip.
