Markus thanks for your videos on repairing this sort of thing, we just repaired my PC speakers, the main power plug had a dry solder joint like this! Saved me a few quid on buying a new pair for the sake of couple of mins with a soldering iron.

Never opened one myself, but from all I've seen online these old B&O hi-fi components are elegantly designed and for ease of repair.

I was a Hi Fi dealer back in the 70's / 80s . Bang & Olufsen got taken over by Phillips which accounts for the use of Phillips components. The motor spindle has a slight bulge in it so that the flat belt rides centrally on the motor spindle. Replacing belts, grommets and styli were common place repairs back in the day.

Really enjoyed this videos, pitched precisely and informatively. This system may as well have been a Bugatti Veyron in terms of affordability when I was young . I had Aiwa , Technics, Garrard and wharfdales cobbled together from Lasky’s

Great video, Markus! I had a friend who bought a B&O wall mount Cassette/CD/Amplifier/Tuner unit and column speakers. It cost a fortune and he had to have a tech from B&O come to the house and set it up. Of course, the tech talked him into buying a bunch of extras too! Sounded great (of course) but at a premium price. Still, it looked amazing! I think that is the biggest sell for B&O - they have brilliant looking designs.

If memory serves that philips mechanism was a highly desirable one and sounded pretty good, in fact nowadays those original players are becoming quite expensive as the transports teamed up with a high quality DAC produce some really good sounds for digital. I had a Marantz that used it, cost me a small fortune in the eighties!

What a daredevil,removing that top plate with the cartridge installed.Just repaired a Bang & Olufsen Beogram RX.It looks the same as the model in this video,but the only way to get to the guts is to remove the bottom and access from the bottom.No way to remove that top plate.Should have checked and adjusted the 33/45 speeds,while turntable was disassembled.

When I was a young one, I would walk into those pricey hifi shops just to drool over B&O gear. As an adult, they had this 5 CD changer that was huge, vertical, with a motorized glass cover where you could see it do it's thing. SO cool ( still want one of those, lol)

I have an RX2 with a shorted tonearm and I have retrofitted a T4P style cartridge to it, and it works great actually.

I still use my Bang & Olufsen speaker that I purchased in 1988, still sounds great.

Nice to see you around again, and thanks forthe vid. I think the OEM scene was much bigger than we think. Even REVOX used a CD player mechanism from Philips. Telefunken used the Pickup and surrounding mechanics from Sony (KSS210 and KSS150). They also used VHS drive mechanics from JVC.I bet there is much more cross-usage of parts going on than we think.

Nice! What did you use to polish the aluminium on the turntable? I have a Beogram 2200 that I bought new around 1980, and still works well with new stylus and belt.

The Philips CD 104 was tops for its day. I owned two of these identical systems, and as they aged replacing the capacitors came to be an expensive issue..

i found one of those on my doorstep .....very good sound output its about 200watts that thing with bass + treble ,ahead of there time they are

I found an all in one B & O system in the street with ‘please take’ - everything worked except the cassette.

i've got a tx2 and an rx2 (the latter which i had to replace the tonearm on) - i love 'em both. most people are scared to deal with b&o because of the proprietary carts but soundsmith makes great replacements (even the $199 SMMC4 is great!) interesting that your RX2 platter has concentric circles - i guess there were different variations (both of mine have the lines emanating from the center)

Hi markus, I have watched your videos for a good number of years, can you do a video on how to solder?

Marantz offered a version of every Philips machine, each was identical apart from badge and colour. Marantz was owned by Philips at that point. Philips co-invented CD with Sony. Both introduced machines the same week. Philips didn't have their 16 bit DAC ready for production so the first machines had the 14 bit 4x over-sampled chipset. Sony had their 16 bit DACs from day one. The Philips machines for whatever reason? sounded really excellent next to the CDP101 from Sony. Very few manufacturers had the facility to produce a CD mechanism, this was cutting edge technology in 1983 - Anyone who didn't have millions and a decade to invest in R and D would pay either Philips or Sony . And it remained that way until cheap CD-R and so on were produced for pennies. Edit. The list of companies using Philips mechanisms would fill about two pages.

B & O did a video 2000 in brown yes it had low cost insides this came from a house sell very likely

Hi, thank you for this video. I have both B&O 4000 and the 3300 set. My question: can the cd player be operated oner the terminal 3300?

I have to say, that's impressive looking engineering in some of the parts.

My memory of seeing B&O gear in record stores in the 90s was that they tended to be wall-mounted (and insanely expensive). It looks like the CD player and cassette deck could be wall-mounted, but I'm assuming you'd need a Corinthian column to put the record player on?

Liked your video and narration. You could have just unsnapped and removed the MMC4 cartridge first, before taking out the plate! That is the most delicate and expensive part on your entire desk!

B&O also had a VHS VCR range in the eighties , guess who made the innards , Philips .

Could it be possible the turntable ticking was the belt teeth touching something, especially if it walked downward a little from the motor not being in alignment?

I'll be honest - I never got the desire for B&O and I still don't even with their new gear. You do find some cool stuff in car boots though. Are you going to use it Markus?

The lack of space was less of an issue for the BeoCenters. They would wall mount.

That was unlikely to be an off-the-shelf Philips CD unit but rather an upgraded unit. Likely parts and calibration would have specified by engineers from the two companies; the upgrades may be difficult for outsiders to identify but typically were expensive. Source: B&O engineers and techs.

I would like to change out the RCA cables on my RX2 but no idea of how, I did replace the RCA plugs.

Hi Markus my name is Paulo , I resonantly bought a B&O beogram 1102, the issue was that the guide return for the tone arm was out of its slot. I’ve managed to place the guide are back, unfortunately Im battling to fix the fly wheel in its position. If you could assist me with some kind of working drawing or sketch I’ll be very grateful.

Hello, The record player motor should not make that ticking noise but you can fix it MMX-4H2RPB Ticking motor cure, Pry off the metal plate at the bottom, Desolder the 2 contacts, Pry off the pully (don’t damage the surface that touches the belt) Now you have the motor on its own, Now you want to carefully pry off the bottom bit of plastic evenly, as you can see through the hole you will be putting stress on the tiny spring contacts breaking these will make it non-repairable, Now you have it off, You will see the black disk supported in a plastic housing this housing breaks apart this is causing the clicking noise, carefully break away all the outer edge (the outer wall just about 3mm high) you might be able to just reassemble like this however sometimes there are cracks through the rest of the housing so I like to take some super glue on a cotton bud and wipe a thin layer over the remaining housing and then press the disk back firmly in place, Now you want to reassemble it being careful of the brushes, if it does not spin then the brushes have been slightly bent out of position so open it again and add suitable tension to the brushed by bending as appropriate there should only be light contact. Also, it's a good idea to put a tiny bit of oil on the bearings while open. Nice video. I was wondering if you considered if the transport security screws were loose or tigth on the Beogram - that will affect the heigth of the motor in relation to the spindle. Another thing: I am sad to inform you, that the Beocenter 4000 is NOT a genuine B&O product. It is just the design - the inside is a standard crap japanese circuitry. Should never have been marketed, in my opinion

I actually thought you had dropped your self in it as I initially thought Linear Tracking Turntable very complicated mechanically with cords and pulleys driving the tone arm along the surface of the record driven by a micro computer tied into the master computer in the base of the turntable.

Your "Olufsen" is correct. But "Bang" is pronounced with a deeper A in Danish - like the second A in "Garrard".

The 2 or 3 times I found B&O stuff in flea markets it was very cheap, under 20 euros. For sure these devices are quite annoying by nowadays standards, as they are top loading and top controls they need they own furniture top space. One other thing I really dislike are those cheap crappy DIN plugs they use for the speakers.

Put some sellotape over the stylus man!!
