I don’t typically leave comments, on TDS videos, because the comment section can kind of turn into a cesspool. But this was far too important to not say anything. I have grown up watching everything Marlee has ever done, and her work has been of such integral importance to my life, at every stage. No, I’m not deaf, but I’ve a lot of deaf friends over the years, one of whom was born deaf, as was his whole family. He’s like a younger brother to me, and I wanted to be able to talk to him and his family, in the language they knew best. I’m like that with any new language, since English isn’t my mother tongue. ASL, then became important for me to know, and be able to teach to my family and friends, as a way to understand me, because I have an autoimmune disease, that causes symptoms which make it impossible for to vocalize, either from it being too painful, or because I lose my voice entirely. These bouts can last for several days, and Marlee’s work played a huge role in my learning and teaching ASL. She was even a huge part of my coming out, and learning to understand my sexual orientation, and how I interpreted it, because of her role in L Word, a character who, at the start, gave me my first glimpse at polyamory(which I am), and was an artist, and expressed art in a way that didn’t fit in the box my teachers and professors were trying to force me into. All of her characters and works, have pulled something from my own soul, and allowed me understand how and why I felt things. I wouldn’t be who I am today, without Marlee Matlin’s influence in my life, and I’m eternally grateful to her for that. Also, I’ve had a massive crush on her, since I was a kid(I’m 33, for reference). ☺️ Thank you to DS and Trevor for doing this interview with her, and thank you for EVERYTHING, Marlee. 💗

I'm greatful she has helped you so much! I have an autoimmune disease too, so I understand the struggle. I have deaf, & hard of hearing friends, & I've tried a to learn asl, but Im not great. But I can get by. My husband has had 16 brain surgeries, & they affect communication. After them he can't talk very well but he can sign basic things. Many people don't understand how difficult it is when you cant communicate. She is a true inspiration, & I hope we see more diversity in hollywood, of every type. Especially of able, & disabled people., & Of different orientations, so everyone can understand what it is, means, & that we are all people. Hope for the best for you!

My prayers will be with you and your family. 💗 I also desperately want to see more diversity in Hollywood, across the board. I’m Native/First Nations and Japanese, I’m pansexual, and trans masculine. I want people on screen, who reflect my story, you know? I hope a day comes where anyone can see a movie, and see themselves reflected on screen.

Would you mind sharing what is responsible for the vocal pain? My aunt has experienced this for years and is finally trying to get a diagnosis and treatment.
@sheikahchic
@sheikahchic 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreym68 It’s different for everyone’s I would assume. My particular issues, come from a combination of asthma, chronic upper respiratory issues, and most especially, GERDS. GERDS is something most will just pass off as, “Oh, it’s just acid reflux.”, but the severity of it differs per person. Mine, is very severe, unfortunately. Because it messes with your stomach acid levels, and causes that to come back up your throat a lot(I’m highly prone to nausea and vomiting), it coats the vocal chords, and causes damage. I’m lucky, because I’m 33, and I can still sing at pretty much the same capacity as when I was a teen. But that’s because I’ve had excellent doctors to make sure I’m doing everything possible, to keep my voice(I do stage acting, musicals in particular). So I would tell you to mention GERDS, with her doctors, and go from there.

Because being an actor means by definition playing someone you're not. What makes an actor creative is the ability to get into the skin and mind of a person different from them, otherwise they're not acting, they're just "being". This is why you never cast a famous person in their own biopic even if they're still living. This new idea that you have to be exactly like the person you're acting as is just demented and irrational. And for some reason, the same people demanding this have no problem with casting a black actor as a Viking or pre-18th century English noble. Listen, I have no problem with casting a black actor as a Viking as long as we agree this is fantasy but don't come whining about a seeing actor playing a blind man or Rudolf Valentino playing an Arab prince. Be consistent.
@kevinconn
@kevinconn Жыл бұрын
@@jugurthasyphax6341 google a free, while it was a small number there were black Vikings and it wasn’t a fantasy as your snide comment suggested. I’m sure your mad at black elves in the new LOTR show 😂 What I’m saying is the world has plenty of capable Blind and deaf actors that can play anything but don’t usually get cast at all. It’s even more insulting to them when a seeing/hearing actor gets hired just because it’s “easier” for the production but all the while going after that “tugging the heartstring” vibe. It’s bs
@BryanLee
@BryanLee 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for featuring Marlee Matlin, and so glad to see more deaf/blind actors getting to play these roles! Of course any abled actor can play such a part, but why deny these roles to the actors out there who can only play roles like these, especially when they bring such authenticity to their performance?
@PBthesquirrel
@PBthesquirrel 3 жыл бұрын
Like she said, it's the sense of authenticity and truly understanding the point of view of the Deaf and/or Blind character. When they were talking about authenticity, it made me think, "it's the same reason we don't have white people playing black people's parts." We (I'm white) don't KNOW. There's no way a white person can portray a Black person, let alone do it convincingly to Black people. It's the same thing, just not as visually obvious (especially to other Hearing people).

I remember from a few episodes of Law and Order: SVU. Her character was close to John Munch (Richard Beltzer). I really do feel that people with those specific disabilities should act them out. I know some think you should be able to play anyone, but as she said, actual members of that community give that authenticity to the role. This reminds me of the character Reagan in A Quiet Place, or Connie from The Walking Dead. I find it extremely important that these roles be filled with more people who actually live it.

Years ago, when I was invested in the study of ASL, I made a sobering discovery about just how important proper grammar is. In English, "you're" and "your" sound _identical,_ and so people who live primarily auditory lives in English tend to get them mixed up. In ASL, though, they look _profoundly_ different.

I loved the deaf assassin character in season 1 of Fargo. Also because the fact that he was deaf was completely incidental, it didn't really matter for the story. Yeah they got some funny banter out of it between him and his partner but that could obviously have been done with a character with perfect hearing ability. But they sort of went out of their way to create a deaf character, hire a deaf actor for the role and didn't make his story into a sappy "sad disabled person" story, the fact that we was deaf didn't really matter.

I’m glad this was brought to the surface! Disability NEEDS to be more represented in society! I was born legally blind and I make KZfaq videos about disability and soon service dogs. I’ll be getting my first guide dog soon! I also got hired last year, in a volunteer program at my local hospital. I work with sighted or people without disabilities.

She was already a pro in "Children of a Lesser God", even though it was her first and she hasn't changed a bit since ❗👏👏 (often when I really like a piece of music, I think back to the scene when William Hurt was trying to explain music to her.... indeed, how DO you explain it...as pleasantly all-consuming (?)
