I hate that lever actions are severely underproduced and getting the Marlin or Henry in the caliber and style you want is next to impossible (other than .22 of course). And if you can find one it costs your first born child. The demand is red hot and I wish more companies would stop producing so many dang ARs and start producing more lever actions.

Get a miroku or an Italian repro of a Winchester, marlin are inferior ( strength of lock up) by design and only improvement is being optic ready.... The only lever action that should make a comeback is the savage 99/win88/ finnwolf/ruger 96-44 Inb4: "reeeeee muh marlin guuud" 1895s have 3x less locking surface than a Winchester 1886 and the lock up is at the rear of the receiver, comparing their strength is like comparing a komission gewerh 88 and a k98, they both can handle 8x57is, the only question is how much margin of error you get, pressurewise.

My dad was a 45-70 freak. He loved his big bore rifles and carbine's. I got my dad's 1895 Marlin he bought back in the late 80's early 90's. It was indestructible. It was my mountain gun. He had a Phelps Heritage 45-70 revolver that was a week long and weighed 34 lbs. He bought it in the mid 70's. It was by far the coolest revolver I have ever shot. I carried it in the mountains a few times but it was just too heavy and I didn't want to scratch it. My dad lost his mind when I took it to the hills. I wasn't aware of how much it was worth. I would rather beat up a Marlin then the Phelps. I'm thinking of buying a new one but heard how bad the Remington's we're. Thank you for this review.now I will buy one. I wish I could own the one you are shooting now. I like a firearm with a history. Owning a Hickock firearm would be so cool. I really enjoy your videos. Happy Safe Shooting 🇺🇸💪

One of my biggest regrets is passing up on a used Marlin 45-70 in stainless steel, $500 at a gun shop. Lever action like butter . . . original CT production. But, I got a 1894 in .357 instead, one of the last ones made in CT before Remington. Horrible construction, but after I filed, stoned, and honed all the internals smooth it shot like a dream. The problem with Marlin was the machining and tooling was worn out. Remington had to convert all the tooling to CNC, so be grateful to them for that . . . and that is why production was hit and miss at the beginning, and eventually the Remington (Remlin) guns were first class quality. Now Ruger has Marlin and will benefit from all the transition in production . . .

Well the Rugers are nice and I love Ruger tremendously. But they are making Marlins that compare to early Marlin JM models? No that is not correct. But I do agree you have a far better chance to pick up a better made rifle than what Remington was producing. But the 1895SBL from Remington didn't suffer the poor craftsmanship that their other Marlin's did. Now , if Ruger builds Marlin 39's again that would be huge! Would they compare to original model 39's? Once again no. But it would give people a chance to pick up a great .22 lever action from Marlin again and at a better price point. Marlin history was actually very respected and will probably never be reproduced again. Marlin did a lot of hand fitting and it showed and you can feel it when you cycle them. I have high hope for Rugers version. And I do not believe you will find a better company to deal with. Ruger has imo the absolute finest customer service I have had the pleasure of dealing with. I have purchased Rugers new that had some rather huge problems. But Ruger has never blinked an eye and they fix or replace their mistakes without hassle. So over the past 40 plus years I have been shooting I have grown to believe that Ruger is a superb company. A stainless Model 39 please Ruger!? Another cool one to bring back would be the rare Marlin model 90 O/U shotgun. I own one of these and love it.

I'm familiar with Winchester and Marlin lever actions and always disassemble them and treat them where need be. I also stripped off the factory finish and gave it a hand rubbed oil finish. While I'm aware of the negative comments about Marlins from the era, that is definitely not my experience. In my gun, I see no flaws in its manufacturing, and it's been flawless in its functioning since I've owned it. Yeah, with use, the action seems to have smoothed out a bit. But I had no complaints about it when it was new. Perhaps, in some respects, the Ruger made Marlins are in subtle ways noticeably better in some respects to some users. MAYBE, you can see your reflection in the polished finish on the Ruger guns better. But, again, I have no criticisms of my 1895 model. Understand that I also own Ruger firearms. And I love them. No criticisms there either. Therefore, I'm not in the least motivated to replace mine with a current model "made" by Ruger. I'm also pleased with my Henry in 44 mag.

Charlie Crum, gunsmith for 50 years, served 4 years in the Marine Corp, lifetime member of the NRA. Member of Isaak Walton gunclub in Leetown WV since he was 17, and my dad, passed away April 4th. The world didn't have many gunsmiths of this caliber. Everyone in the firearm community who knew him, had alot of respect for this man. He will be missed. Love you daddy.

Hi Mike... I am so sorry to hear about your loss! Stay strong! Loosing your father is a major shitshow! A huge bag of pure hurt! It is falling from the top of the crap-tree, hitting every shit-branch on the way down... Your Father sounded like a real stand-up-guy/salt-of-the-earth-type .. Be proud of that! Honor that!... You will without a doubt be the love of his life! I am sorry to say that you will never NOT miss him, but you will learn to deal with the pain... Please remember not to cry, because it is over... but to smile because it happened! You had him and he had YOU! He will NEVER leave your heart!

@@sneakinggodzilla6328 I appreciate your comments. He was a very stand up man. A proud Marine. He was suffering alot towards the end. I'm relieved that he resting peaceful now. I'm very proud of my dad. He learned gunsmithing from his mentor in the early 60s. And exploded into the firearm community. In 2016 he was invited to a pistol shoot at Mt Weather. He declined because he had to much work to do. The guy called him the following week and said that he won 1st 2nd and 3rd place in that shoot. He said how did I do that? The guy told him 1st and 2nd was won by pistols he built. 3rd was won by a pistol that he tuned up. He told me that story a week before he passed. His mind was still sharp. His poor body, not so much. Thanks again. PEACE ✌

Hey, it looks like it had a little split in the wood. I have the Remington 45-70 and it is a great gun. I also got the 30-30 Remington blued and i had to look at 3 of them to get a good tight one. It has the micro groves and is a great gun also. It was sad Remington put some not so good ones out.

Yes the 95 SBL is a handsome rifle in a grizzly stopping cartridge. The 95 SBL is not worth the asking price of over $2000 on GunBroker as of April 13, 2022. At the end of the day The 95 SBL is a lever action rifle produced by an American company for large game. Glad to see that Ruger resurrected Marlin from the dead.

I started my journey in firearms with a Ruger PC40 Carbine chambered in .40 S&W. It was factory new but surplus from the USA Border Patrol in Arizona. I added a stainless steel Ruger KP944 as a side arm matched to the carbine so they shared not only ammunition but also magazines. Then the wheel-gun crested my horizon. First was a superb target S&W in .327 magnum with a swing-out cylinder. Feeding my big-bore habit I added a 50th Anniversary Ruger .44 mag and began a love of CAA firearms. I added a stainless steel Ruger Vaquero in .327 mag. On the other extreme of calibers, I first was gifted a Henry lever-action rifle in .22LR. Its companion sidearm is a Beretta Neos in .22LR. I've been chasing an S&W Model 3 Schofield to add a too-break revolver to the mix. However, they are too expensive and listening to the InRange folks, I've stayed away from Italian repros. Earlier this year a came across an S&W 4th generation top-break revolver from 1904 in .38 S&W. I've identified subsonic rounds to fire, but I'm waiting for a safety inspection. We'll leave the long guns to another thread.

No surprise that the quality of this rifle is so high. Ruger has been known for high quality since its inception. Acquiring Marlin was a brilliant move on Ruger's part. Sad to see Remington die, but happy to see the Marlin name thrive despite its former owner's demise. Fortunately, not even Remington could kill them.

Had a standard marlin 45-70 in the 80s great rifle smooth and accurate from day one. Sold it to Captain for elk in Canada he loved it. Bought a Remington version a few years after they bought them waited ti they could get the sights on top of barrels. Took a lot of work to even get it to function at all let alone smoothly, wasn't near as accurate but 3" plus at 100 yards. The old one shot 3 rounds touching with iron sights at 100 yards no matter who was shooting it! Hope Ruger keeps quality up.

Some how I just cant warm up to that new Ruger. That rail is SO out of place! Otherwise, Lovely gun! A 300 LC at 1500 is just pleasant to shoot, and is my main woods walk plinking load. Has already protected me from a carnivorous vicious Woodchuck Horibilus! One shot drop! Has become my favorite woods gun! Glad to see them put a peep sight on it, I have the XS on mine. 45-70 Forever!! Jerry

Excellent review of a truly great rifle; very glad Ruger took it on from Remington and made such an effort with quality. Thanks for being so objective. You are correct, not all Rem-built 1895 SBLs were bad; I have one made in 2016 and it's great. The early ones from the first couple of production years seemed to be most problematic. Mine has good fit and finish, shoots to (on average) about 1 MOA using Hornady 325 grain lever evolution ammo, which is excellent. I use mine for hunting in Ohio (where only straight wall cartridges are legal); I had mine cerakoted in grey as I don't like the bright silver finish, especially for hunting.
