Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue at Live Talks Los Angeles discussing their book, "What Makes a Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share with Us the Secrets to a Happy Life."
What makes a marriage last? Who doesn’t want to know the answer to that question? To unlock this mystery, iconic couple Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue crisscrossed the country and conducted intimate conversations with forty celebrated couples whose long marriages they’ve admired-from award-winning actors, athletes, and newsmakers to writers, comedians, musicians, and a former U.S. president and First Lady. Through these conversations, Marlo and Phil also revealed the rich journey of their own marriage.

I remember watching Marlo and Phil falling in love before our eyes right there on his show. They sat across from each other, gazing into each other's eyes and smiling broadly, as if no one else was in the studio. Instant chemistry! 💞

Phil Donahue was, and is, the greatest Interviewer of all time. His sharp wit, candid questions, probing without pushing approach is unmatched. His cutting edge subject matter was riveting and fascinating. His compassion was palpable. He will always be the best ever. Oprah who?

That is so true what Marlo is saying that one should accommodate that person you care about. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way and I found myself in a loveless marriage due to the lack of not having someone that loved me at all.

People are people! Realize we All have faults, be their best friends. My husband said if I just went over and got a deck of cards and played solitarie which gave me time to clear my mind and not get really mad, and in my husband would go outside, then come back in and say ,,,are you not angry at me now. I just need to quiet time which we both finally say okay we are near to each other. We are best friends!.Laugher is so good for us all!. How do you raise kids without laughter? One time my son got up at night and told us to be quiet as he had school in the morning! We were laughing.but didn't realize we were loud. Compliments, even small ones

I love Phil and owe him so much. He could never know. He opened so many minds to the endless variations in human sexuality. We are all variants. It is not a continuum. It is a night far from the city where the stars all shine a different light. Marlo will always be in my mind. I was 11 at the start of 1966. Marlo was held up but the teens and others as the ideal woman. They both are just people but what great people they are. Phil was a substitute father for me. I watched his show whenever possible and watch his timeless shows today. I learned more important things from him then my university.

I grew up watching them both and LOVED both of their shows. I remember the Donahue show on the day that they met! Her comment "marriage is like putting your ear up to a vacuum and sucking out your brains," before she met him was classic. So glad they have lasted this long. At the same time, wish she would listen to him more, interrupt less...not being sexist I would dislike it even more if he did the same to her. But as she said, they are different. Beautiful after all these years.

Glad to hear from them both. Marlo is a story teller, that's her gift. Phil seems Ok with her chatting. He chatted all of his life..He has learned to share and knows when to interrupt and not to. Especially giving grace to a bold feminist partner. I think they have strong personalities and found love in the middle.

wow this was so very informational. I love when Marlo said this is not a "how to" or 'tip' book but it seems to me it's experiential ... couples sharing their experiences and how they each keep and work on their marriage. Thanks to Phil and Marlo and the interviewer & the questions asked. Great job for allowing them to speak without cutting them off at the pass.

Phil has deep thoughts and processes things deeply, that always took more time. Marlo is a quick thinker. I kind of wish though, that Marlo allowed Phil to take his pauses and not fill them in. Because after he pauses, a deeper thought or question emerges from Phil. That was always his gift. He was thinking and she kind of seemed impatient waiting for him to continue. I wish she would just breathe and trust in his wisdom that emerges, after his pause. Marlo has very smart things to say also and is eager to say them.
