Come along as I chase a trio and a quartet of Marquette Rail SD40-2's on the Grand Rapids Subdivision.
We begin our day as the Turn Job crew arrives south of White Cloud to take a train of inbounds north to Baldwin. After a brief stop in Baldwin to drop off the inbounds, pick up an extra SD40-2, and set out a bad order, the Turn Job crew wastes no time taking a large outbound train south to Comstock Park, where the crew will tie down the train.
Locations include; Baldwin, Lilley, Brohman, Bitely, White Cloud, Newaygo, Grant, Bailey, Kent City, and Comstock Park
Filmed entirely on June 7, 2019

Standard cab rosters are always fun. I can't wait to document more! The Meteor seems like a pretty safe grab in the long summer daylight hours. The Eagle? not so much. but I'm hopeful for a couple shots in daylight eventually. Newaygo needs to be done again with the drone where the train doesn't sneak up on me.

Going to be quite the year for black flies with all the excessive rain we've been getting. Gotta remember that bug spray!

Funny thing is, Baldwin is the only place we really noticed them but they were insane! Good thing we soaked ourselves in spray earlier.

Baldwin was originally a junction town, with the north/south Grand Rapids-Traverse City line crossing the east/west Ludington to Midland line. Both were once operated by Pere Marquette. The line north of Baldwin, the part between Baldwin and Kaleva, was torn up in 1955, while the line east of the junction to Midland was torn up in 1988. This explains why the modern configuration is what it is, with the diamond now acting as the transition point where the Grand Rapids sub becomes the Ludington sub.

Excellent video. Love the graphics with the info about the location and the job itself. Those engines have a different horn than the one's I'm used to on CNs locomotives

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. One of those horns sounded pretty sickly! THANK YOU for the feedback about the info and graphics!! I often wonder if it is enough to give the unfamiliar a better understanding.

Is there an engineer and conductor in the cab, or just an engineer? Who gets the train in Baldwin? Enjoyed the video much. You picked a good day. Haven't had very many this year.

It looks like conductors follow the road train in company trucks so as to speed up the switching process and keep the trains moving across the system more fluidly. The train from Manistee is called the Meteor. It runs freight to Baldwin and sometimes works Walhalla Junction. The train from Ludington is called the Eagle and handles freight to Walhalla or Baldwin. In short, there is a Manistee Sub train, a Ludington Sub train, and a Grand Rapids Sub train (and yard jobs in Ludington and Manistee). It was a great day indeed! Full sun, mild temps, and low humidity are my favorite days to film on. I hope to catch the Eagle and the Meteor this summer. :) THANK YOU for watching!!

How many trains per day run the Marquette line?

Z151/The Turn Job, The Meteor, and The Eagle all operate over various portions of the system throughout a normal work day. Different trains run at different times of the day/night.
