Same is true in Eastern Catholicism. So we do have married priests, and the same is true - they cannot become bishops. It’s not a tradition on the Latin side, but I think allowing married men to become priests would not be a bad thing. As in Orthodoxy, a man who is not married and becomes an Eastern Catholic priest cannot got married after his ordination. I think many married men who became Latin Deacons would have jumped at the chance to have become a priest. This isn’t to suggest abolishing the vow of celibacy completely. But if a man were already married, I think the option to become a priest would be a good thing.

Not having to be celibate is a very small part of marriage. Marriage has innumerable benefits on the soul, it can refine you into a saint. I don’t have a problem with priests being married. They already exist in the Eastern rites of the Roman Catholic Church. Rabbi’s were always married, and historically many priests too. Married priests can enrich their communities is a unique way. And in those churches, women often benefit because they have a spiritual mother in the priest’s wife. There will always be those who are called to celibacy, both priests and non priests, but is a universal ban the answer? I’m not sure. Luckily it’s not up to me 😂
@missequestrian344810 ай бұрын
I like your reply - I also am not sure that’s for sure the answer; I lean towards the points for having celibate priests, as they can wholly devote themselves to their “spiritual children” and such. But; I also feel it wouldn’t be the worst thing to allow people in different life stages or paths to become priests. I know people can always contribute in different ways; but I could see certain situations where this might be a good thing. My patron saint is actually St. Elizabeth Ann Seton - and she was both a mother and a religious sister - because that’s the path God called her on. Anyways, I can see both sides, I do see the norm/general rule of celibate priests as probably a very good thing, but I’m not so sure a total ban is the answer. Like you said - good thing it’s not up to me, cause I don’t know that much!! Side note: I also hate the arguments that make it seem like celibacy = holiness (not what he was saying, but people sometimes say stuff like that) and it’s really bothersome because Jesus made it so clear that holiness does not depend on your worldly status.

Part of the reason priests don't get married is because they are so busy being priests they don't have time for a family. St Paul said it correctly when he said that a married man has to focus on his family and cannot be as focused on God. It's also extremely difficult for children to be raised by the religious due to that lack of time and high expectations. Hence why "the pastors kid" is a stereotype.

Priests have never been allowed to marry; rather, the Church has and still does ordain married men.

Marriage is essential, with the family being the center of Gods plan. Christ never asked anyone to deny themselves marriage. This is an incorrect tradition, Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ want us to have eternal companions. This practice is uninspired and has led to much sin and heartbrake, ie priests becoming starved and depraved. This celibacy contradicts the family. God does not want his leaders to be void of family. This practice might seem wise in the world, but the wisdom and precepts of men are insufficent and foolish. It is a stumbling block.

Our Catholic Church has had 2 married priests. Both were Church of England converts.
