Oh thanks! Glad to hear this! The EMG comparison is on my to do - list. I tried a guitar once that had those Black Winters but wasn’t my thing. But if I get a hold of a guitar that has those then I’d do a review. Too much hassle to install them to one of my guitars for just one video ’cos I use most of them constantly on recordings etc. so I also don’t have the time 😊.

Recently picked up a JCM2000 DSL and have barely turned on my other amps since. I bought it for the overdrive but the green channel switched to mode two crunch is really special. With a strat, klon type pedal to push the front and the gain set to ~2-3, I swear it makes a better sound than my deluxe reverb being pushed. Run it through a 4x12 with greenbacks and couldn’t be happier. The crazy thing is the head and cab barely cost more than I paid for the deluxe reverb! The fact that it can do bluesy stuff on one channel and then take my LP tuned to C# without a hiccup on the other really shows how much ground this amp covers. For the price, it can’t be touched.

Very cool!! I actually had a DSL100H I got at a great price. I did a few mods to it, a choke, a new oversized transformer and a cap switch. I felt the transformer and choke really helped me get closer to the 800. It felt less cheap. I was using it just like you with green boosted. I put an eq in the loop as well. For the money and with a little know how to work on amps the DSL100H can be a great amp. I believe your are using the 100hr which is the latest model. I think the 100h are voiced slightly different. Better in my opinion. Great video!! Love your sound.

As always, great videos that always have something applicable to my interests. Great playing too! Yeah...well, my bass player has a studio in his basement and has invested in 2 half stacks (one for me and one for the other guitar player), a full drum kit as well as a PA system for the band to use for practice. So far be it for me to complain about anything. I use a DSL100 and the other guitar player uses a Peavey-something. My personal amps include: 'a '72 100w Super Lead, an '84 50w JCM800 and an '89 JCM 100w 2210. All I can say is that everything is different when I go from any of my amps to the DSL100. Don't get my wrong, the DSL100 is a nice amp, but it's missing the soul, as you say "the feel", that my amps have. My pedals (mostly Fulltone) even sound different. By different, I mean not as good with the DSL100. I totally agree that it's something with the low-mids making the difference. As you've said for the price the DSL100 is a nice amp and in my band's practice studio it blows away the other guitar player's Peavey-whatever. There's a reason why vintage Marshall amps command the price they do. Rock on!

I owned and gigged with a modded jcm 800 back in the early 90s. I have to agree with you in that the raw power that you 'feel' from a jcm 800 is just something you need to experience in person to appreciate. There's no comparison. I acquired a DSL 100h and I'm happy with it. It gets you the classic marshall tones we all are familiar with. Does it 'feel' like a classic jcm 800? No, not even close. But for the money, you really can't complain. Takes pedals well, it's versatile, and so far reliable. I'm sure if I modded it, it would turn into a beast. But why? I turn the amp on, and it just works. I'd rather have something that works and sounds decent, than to deal with another headache.

Great tone for the money, I am thinking about combining it with the MR1960 B Cabinet, it is like 1500€ combined with the top. What British model would be the cheapest after this DSL top ? And is that top that much better ? The JCM 800 is like , double the money if not more to the DSL100HR, is there something in between the DSL100HR and the JCM800 that is better than the DSL ? I can get the JVM210H for the same price used as a brand new DSL100HR, would that be a better alternative ? I am new to Marshall stuff. There is also a model called JCM900 MKIII which I can get even cheaper used than the DSL100HR.

I love your videos, Euge. Can you do a video on monitors vs headphones vs FRFRs. I cannot get any speakers to sound anywhere near as good as my £30 studio headphones. I find monitors and FRFRs make my guitar tone sound like the IR is only working 75%.
@EugeValovirta230V2 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear this! Thanks! I don’t know how I’d do one ’cos I mean everyone has different audio system / environment and things will sound like they will sound with that particular system / environment. I use Sonarworks Reference system in my studio which makes the speakers completely flat and ”tuned” to my room so they don’t colour the sound at all and it’s the most ”honest”. Another tip; when micing a cab and dialling a sound never listen the cab but the mic’d sound with good studio monitors ’cos that’s the (recorded) sound everyone will hear.

What are the best zakk Wylde settings on the dsl100 with an sd1?
@EugeValovirta230V Жыл бұрын
There aren’t such things. How one sounds depends mostly about the player and then everything else that comes after that (pickups, guitar, amp etc.) Cabinet & speakers and the mics being used to capture it all are about 80% of the rest. You have too much low end - decrease the low end, sounds too scooped - increase mids etc. If someone claims that those ”magical” setting things exists; that someone doesn’t know anything about (playing) guitar 😎.

It’s ok but tube amps in general sound better the more power tube mojo is in there 💪😎. I had the amp pretty much cranked but thanks to the St. Rock Reactive Load / Attenuator I was able to keep the volume really low which is important ’cos our brains ”tricks” us so that pretty much anything loud we hear sounds good but that doesn’t mean it really sounds good but is just loud 😎.

Onetime or another you should open up your Bad Boy and show us its guts... maybe someone modded it and that’s why it sounds so magic? 😃
@@EugeValovirta230V I GOT IT!! It has indeed been modded! Even though the picture is a miniature, I spotted an added cathode bypass cap at the third stage (the one before the cathode follower), which isn’t there in stock 2203/2204s! That’s why it has more gain and bite than any other! It’s an electrolytic cap, from its dimensions I suspect it might be a 0.68uf but it might also be another, bigger value (this is where the “fat cap” was placed in Van Halen’s Plexi). I have always thought the Bad Boy could have this mod!!
@EugeValovirta230V2 жыл бұрын
OK! Maybe it’s the Scandinavian Edition thing since my 800 from ’85 is similar and all the ’made for Scandinavian Market in the 80s’ - are the most aggressive & best sounding 800s I’ve played 💪😎. @@EugeValovirta230V hi, no it is clearly an aftermarket mod. It is a very common mod, for example the Jake E. Lee mod consists in a 22u fat cap there. I would show those guts pictures back to your amp tech to see if he recalls the value of that cap!

Such a great guitarist, but our ears are hearing two different things. That DSL was definitely way more articulate, while the 800 sounded muddy a flubby. Night and day difference at least with these old ears.
