Been listening to this clip for a while as I’m trying to decide if I want a Wangs. The Wangs does sound a bit brighter, but the Marshall seems to have more low end, despite being only 20W. It’s tough, because what I like about JCM800 is the balance in the low end with the glassy high mids.

In Europe these are about the same price (around 900 euro). It's very subjective but I'd rather have the SC20H. I prefer the Marshall's slightly warmer/thicker sound and it looks right for a Marshall. The build quality of the Wangs seems stellar though, and for someone else that one could be a great choice as well.

Johnny M, Same here… picked up a Wangs 2204 as of last month. (cream with a 1x12 cabinet) The amp is really incredible and took me back to 1982, while playing through a Marshall #2204 and a Mesa Boogie (the one with EQ on the righ hand side.) … the Boogie was SICKENING LOUD and could be heard for blocks and blocks! I’ll never forget that one! But the Marshall had that “magic tone” that you could feel through your guitar and your entire body, almost as you were one with the amp and could do no wrong. I get that with this amp and a good 4x12. It doesn’t need pedals (Wangs) but with an SD-1, it most certainly throws some fire in front of the amp and is a huge tonal reward! All in all, I’m extremely happy with my Wangs and plan on doing more business with them soon, as well as adding a video of the seriousness of this amp! 🔥🔥🔥 Best! ✌🏼

Great comparison! - really well done, and I appreciate the high production value of demonstrations. For me, the Wangs was a clear winner on the clean-ish tones, but the crunch tones were taken hands down by the Marshall. The Marshall has a very particular "woody knock" in the low midrange, and an aggressiveness to its attack that isn't "pretty" like the Wangs, but it is quintessentially "Marshall", and the reason why I fell in love with that tone 30 years ago. With the metal-is tones - again - the Wangs sounded excellent, but a little "prettier". The low end was less muddy in the Wangs too, but I was missing a little of the Marshall's "punch to the guts". Once again, congratulations on a really excellent video!

The Wang's has more open feel and brighter cleans. Distortion/drive is also more open and full. Not surprised really, but it's interesting how similar they sound. It's like the Marshall is just a Wangs with a powersoak or half watts, but they both are awesome. Great jamming as always. If I were buying one of these, I'd pick up the Wang's and try to metal it up with a boost or two but let the amp retain its character. Something about the Marshall sound just works for a lot of different extreme genres if dialed in right. Great vid!

@@tschuld1 So i tried all 3 of them, the SV20h too. The SC20 have a better more direct sound its more clear and louder but havent got as much gain as the 2525H. The 2525H has this more modern tone, more "metal" saturated and thick tone but at the same time also probably a better clean tone ironically. I miss the 2525h a bit but for a more direct marshall sound I think I did the right choice going with the SC20H It can give you more "plexitone" as well (im using a carl martin plexitone) and with a revv g3 and a lovetone silver I can get some more modern tones. SC20H takes pedals better also. The SV20H is probably the best amp of all of the 3 but its got its distinct vintage tone and if you want a more modern tone its the other two. I guess....

@@tschuld1 They are different and excel at different things so im sorry to say the only way is too really test them in real life I would say! I also think that you cant really replicate the exact sound of the other one using pedals neither. You can get close but not there quite. I miss the softer saturated tone from the 2525h when pulling out the left pull channel to get some more middle not over the top bluestones, bonamassa overdrive tones. I think its better at that. The more you turn down the input gain on the 2525h the better it takes pedals. SV20 is not good with pedals either. Jons comparison vid. is the best one out there, if you listen at the end isolated back and forth carefully, it gives you the best youtube feel but its more after playing them irl that you also can relate to that: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbiknNmLq5-0nGg.html

Achieving the desired tones without IC’s or anything to change the shortest most direct circuit path from input to output. Plus the components are much larger in Handwired turret builds. Thy to get a Marshall with IC’s repaired vs Wangs “Simple Circuit” and your looking at huge repair cost value in Wangs... Hope that helps 🍻

Nice video comparison. I have an SC20H and a 4104 (2204) in a head shell. By far the difference can be felt and heard in the room. Basically the girth of the 50 watts (power transformer, etc.) The SC20's are modeled after the 2203's which had a slightly different preamp than the 2204's. This included more gain and quicker onset of break up along with where the midrange eq sat. In all: shades of greatness. The 50 watter is a great workhorse. I know now that the SC20 is a great smaller version of the 2203 full or half stack for users especially if have running through the same speaker types (ie: 8 G12M's for 100, 2 G12M's for 20) helps to keep the same percentage of speaker break up and response. Looking forward to your next video.

I felt that carried though in the overdrive segment but a little less noticeable/more nuanced. They both sound great and quite close to each other. I venture to guess that a double blind test would leave most folks (those who do not listen critically) unable to tell which was a JCM and which was not. If ii was to pick one on my ears alone, it'd be the 2204HW. But my preference is not on the metal style sound. If I was oriented towards metal, I suspect I'd pick the JCM.

There are so many old wives tales when it comes to tube amps, especially when you dive deep into components and manufacturing methods. Here's what I heard years ago about turret board/hand wired construction vs PC boards, which may or may not be complete bullshit: the board traces are very close together on a PC board and this conductor-insulator-conductor arrangement comprises a capacitor. Depending upon how the circuit is designed and laid out, this capacitance can act to roll off/attenuate desirable frequencies in the signal path. I'm sure this roll-off can be minimized with careful engineering, which doesn't always happen. So, aside from the obvious simplicity of a hand wired amp and the relative ease of maintenance and modification compared to an amp using a PC board, there can be tonal advantages to be had as well (apparently, haha).

Thank you for this enlightening video.. Explaining the importance Wangs 50w HW series are called “Simple Circuits” This mean Wangs use the shortest most direct circuit path from input to output. By adding a FX loop and IC’s this break a code known as “The Honorable build” becouse you’re achieving a desired sound without adding anything to the circuit path.. When you ad IC’s your adding integrated circuits (little dirt boxes, EQ, compression ect..) to the original circuit. This creates lots of repair issues and high cost) So Wangs #2204HW achieving the modern JCM800 sound without all the extra “stuff” is what’s makes them special.

What it probably is is the voltage drop on the Marshall that limits the power tubes to 20 watts. It is browning out the sound by over 50%. That means much less headroom, plus more compression and saturation etc. Even more so if you go to the lower power mode. A sacrifice you have to make to limit a pair of EL-34s to just 20 watt max, but if you are after lots of squish, it can be fun. The Wangs is running it's tube at full power it seems, i.e., 50 watts. It probably also has a bigger output transformer, which some folks say results in a bigger sound (I am still on the fence about that one).

But I agree with what you state about maintenance, handwired is much easier to fix for a tech. Considering the price of these two I would take the Wang anytime, handwired amp will last a lifetime and then some if you have it serviced once in a while.

I agree. My redbear is hand wired P2P. I would throw it up against any other JCM type amp out there. With the 6l6’s, and slightly boosted, you’d be hard pressed to telm a difference in a blind comparison with offerings from Fortin/Friedman/etc. And not to forget that the cleans are straight out of a Bassman.

The Wangs is 50w, correct? I suspect we might be hearing the difference between 20 vs 50 and size of transformers, AS YOU MENTIONED.

How about a hi-gain distortion on a clean amp setting? That's very much how we used them back in the day, as no venues could take the high volume levels from a 2204 half stack, and turned the guitars to zero in the PA. All we could hear was the drums...because PA-guys are drummers who never got the gig.

Marshall hands down. Warmer, more body. Why is everyone saying the Marshall sounds compressed, I'm hearing the opposite. The Wangs probably has higher plate voltage. Also I think the Wangs has orange drop caps. I bet it would sound a lot better with. Mustard caps. Anyways that's my. Opinion. The clean tones. After hearing the overdrive and boosted the Wangs holds its own.

Hi Jon, I have a question and I hope you can solve my doubt, Is there a difference in sound of use a Mark V 35 vs 90 watts with a reactive load using IR (I love the OH IRs by the way)? Or the same with ENGL Savage 120 vs 60. Thank you so much, great youtube channel.

I’m very surprised how similar they are. I think the biggest difference is the headroom and transformers like you said. While I prefer the Wangs I can hear something that Marshall does that is just very Marshall. Almost that jcm 900 mushiness (in a good way)

I dunno the notes seem to bloom a bit nicer and are less chimey to my ears on the marshall. They're both the same price in Australia so a tough choice. I already own an Egnater Armageddon for metal and it does good rock tones but want something a bit more vintage voiced, leaning towards the Wangs tho as I do like an underdog and less dime a dozen amps

I honestly couldn't tell the difference on the two with the stomp pedal in front of them. Maybe it sounds different in the room though. I think ultimately if I was going to get one, I'd probably still buy the Marshall. The Wangs amp isn't exactly cheap, and since you're going to be dropping some serious coin either way, that little bit of extra money I think is well spent getting the real deal.

Damn, that was interesting. I have a Wangs 2204HW, so I'm probably biased. On the clean sounds the Wangs had a bit more "air". On the dirty sounds the Wangs had a bit more "air". Other than that, the "average" person, i.e., audience member, would be hard pressed to tell the difference. In all fairness, my 2204HW needs a re-tube. It hasn't been used much and the tubes are already garbage. So anybody looking for a bargain with the 2204HW should add the cost of a re-tube to the equation. It's inevitable. In a live band setting the differences would be imperceptible.

Both amps sound awesome, and the fact that the Wangs is close to half the price of the Marshall is just crazy. I think that, if money is not a factor, then I like the Marshall a little bit more, it just has that spank in the right place and the Wangs doesn’t seem to have it quite right, and the lack of an effects loop just makes it a hard sell for me.

Having watched this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLt1as9y0rqngXU.html I've decided to hold off on the new Marshall stuff. What bugs me is all the cheaping out on components. Just makes the whole thing seem like a price gouging exercise. I.e. they make the amp for $500 and sell it for 2 grand. Bit of a piss take. Wangs sounds phenomenal and you can get it for $800. Hand wired too with, from my limited understanding, premium components. So I'll buy the Wangs. Thanks for the video. Much appreciated.

I dig the more pushed power section so Marhsall wins, but the Wang gets extra points for a great name as well as killer sound. I find my Marshall (modded JVM) loses a lot of top end when I run it into IRs any idea why? I don't think it's the input signal as if I send the line level output into a poweramp and speaker it's still all there.
@acexxxoasis
@acexxxoasis 3 жыл бұрын
Probably because most IR are based off a mic sound and the mic will have roll offs and peaks most notable in the high frequency not to mention if there's any post on the IR, they will often times throw a further lpf and hpf to bring it more into the frequency range the guitar generally sits in.

the wangs sounded to have the edge on headroom, bigger power section. balanced, open and broad tone. marshall had a hump in the low mids, not so open and broad tone, lacking the highs of the wangs. but the marshall sat nicely in the mix, the wangs was more in your face, modern and dynamic.

The Marshall has more presence, but the Wangs also sounds great. The Marshall has that specific lower mid sound. If you want it to sound like a Marshall and you have the $$ , definitely get the Marshall. If you want a great sounding tube amp, the Wangs is one. Ordinarily when you're playing an amp, you're not a/b-ing it with another amp anyway.
Which Mini Marshall should you get? Jubilee vs. Plexi vs. JCM800
