In today's video, Paul Drew and James Ivey from The studio Rats look at a Marshall JCM 900. The Marshall JCM 900 was marshall taking the JCM into the 1990s. These vintage amps sound fabulous and at the moment you can pick them up for a steal.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

@@NGS2410 Of course it is! My JCM 900 was built in 1997. Isn't 25 years 'old' for an amplifier? We should get rid of that notion that only 'Plexis' are old. This is what so called 'vintage dealers' try to tell us to make big bucks!

I was the very proud owner of a DR stack in the early 90's as a teenager. Loved it, I could get every classic rock sound from it and it was so versatile. I could never understand the dislike for them years later. It is certainly a better amp than the 2000 line. I want another now!

My first tube amp was a JCM 900 50 watt Dual Reverb, and it's still my favorite amp. Just because it sounds DIFFERENT than a JCM 800 doesn't mean it sounds BAD. And yes, I also have a JCM 800, so I know what they sound like as well. I have 3 Marshalls, 2 Boogies, 2 Fenders, an Orange, and an EVH. I love them all for their different characteristics, but the 900 is my favorite.

@@tomasotreasaigh111 well, settings are really gonna kind of depend on your guitar and the tone you're going for. My #1 is a 79 Les Paul Standard and I like heavier, but melodic music. My personal settings on my amp are Presence 6, Bass 10, Mid 6, Treble 8, Gain 14. In the end though, you're just going to have to use your ears as amps can sound different from one to the next.

Guys, off the back of this and your part 2 video, I have discovered this fantastic amp. Luckily one came up on fleabay locally, so I managed to get it at a reasonable price with the original footswitch. Can't afford replacement windows, so until I procure a (cheap) attenuator, It's gonna have to be cranked pre-amp and luke warm power tubes! I have a few of the 80's solid state Marshalls - Lead 12/ Reverb 12/ Bass 12 and Master Lead Combo, which are also really cool. A bit of a trip back in time as the Lead 12 was my 1st amp. These made in England amps are absolute 1st class, and true to Uncle Jim's vision! Thank-you!!

Way to go Paul and James! I watched this video with a few beers in me and decided I needed a JCM 900 Combo ASAP. Jumped on Reverb and found a 4501 and ordered it. This was Dec 3rd. While making purchases when I am a little tipped is not rare, this one... I learned a lesson...."Don't order things from Poland, shipped to the USA during the busy Xmas shipping season!" Duh! It sat in the Paris, France FedEx facility for 13 days. Then miraculously it showed in transit to Chicago, IL. It showed up at my doorstep today in Minnesota...cardboard box was all wet....Uh oh. Opened it while the FedEx gal was still here and luckily it was wrapped in plastic and it came out looking great. Played it in the living room and it sounded good. Then, put it on top of my Mesa Boogie 1x12 closed cab with a Vintage 30. Yes! It Rocked. Played it for 2 hours straight (80s Rock). Thanks for the tip guys!

Now, I feel old...lol. James was talking about how he used to go to the local music store as a teen and dream of owning the JCM 900. The JCM 900 Hi Gain Dual Reverb 100 watt head and matching 1960A cab was my first non-combo tube amp. I got that amp when I was 24 years old. I was playing a Peavey Bandit 112 "teal stripe" solid state amp up until that point. It took me a couple years of saving money, but I bought that Marshall half stack in full. The day I bought it and got it down in my basement rehearsal space, I just stared at it. I couldn't get over that this monster amp was actually mine. I was like in shock...lol. I don't have my original JCM 900 amp any more. I wish I would have kept it, especially since I worked so hard to save up for it. It served me well in the 90's, recording and gigging. Luckily, a couple of years ago I was able to buy a used JCM 900 1960A cab from the 90's and bought a brand new Vintage Reissue JCM 900 4100 head. I really don't know why people gave the Hi Gain Dual Reverb such a low ranking. They get caught up in that it uses a clipping diode instead of using their ears. I love the JCM 900. It really is a great amp. Thanks Paul and James. I am glad James that you were able to get your JCM 900 combo. It sounds awesome.

@Nicko Lps I guess that depends on what your after. I like a simpler circuit for doing mods, and repairs. There are a few things in the later designs that can be somewhat of a technical nightmare. The 900 board is to busy. I would rather have a Friedman. To each their own though.

@Nicko Lps I considered getting a Marshall 15-20 watt head prior to getting a Jet City JCA22h. I wanted an amp that could do vintage, and metal well. I also wanted a good platform for mods. There is more than one way to get Marshall tone. I do some tech work, so as long as the PCB doesn't have too many solid state components, I can get the sound I want from it. For non techies, the solid state components may offer some added tone shaping features. I like an amp to be as serviceable as possible.

There were three versions of it actually. The later Dual Reverb, the SL-X and the MKIII. I had a 100 watt Dual Reverb head and it was an early 90's with EL34 tubes, which were later 5881 tubes, which are what the reissues use. I did sell it and bought a Plexi, which I do prefer. One of the big complaints, and I wasn't one of those complaining, was there are op-amps in it for the gain stage as opposed to a power section saturation for overdrive which would be a Plexi. It had a great clean sound, some of the best for a Marshall, but in a hi-gain setting it could be a bit buzzy, fizzy, and wasn't really what I was looking for from a Marshall. Truth is, even with a Plexi, if you want it clean but meaty, just turn the guitar down. They're fine amps, but for me, I prefer a Superlead, it really is the truest Marshall tone for me. But to each their own there...

Back in the day, I had a Dual Reverb 2x12 combo with 5881’s for years. The OD channel sounded great and served it’s purpose well for many gigs… although the clean channel, in my opinion, sucked. The way the pots were built into the PCB was certainly a weak point and as the amp aged it did suffer from that… lots of pops and cracks and scratchiness. All in all it served me well for the rock that I was playing at the time… I even got to open for some larger acts like Henry Lee Summer and Randy Bachman and others. I did eventually get rid of the amp and I replaced it with several hand built Germino amps… I have never looked back. But the JCM 900 series does have a particularly nice crunchy overdrive that is very nicely voiced for that type of playing.

I have a 4100. This has been very useful as I generally played my rhythm on channel b with gain on about 3 o’clock, gonna take it back to 11 o clock like you guys (I use pedals and a channel for leads). I would have to say these are also properly built. I’ve had mine since 2005 and the only time it ever went wrong was when I blew the transformer cranking it into a Marshall power brake. Sometimes I do wish I bought the 50 watt version - however the 100w was useful for bigger gigs. I also thought it sounded better at 100W as opposed to the 50W triode mode

JCM 900 got a bad rap from hobbyist numpties playing in Madison Square Bedroom. It was a big part of the 90s played by many pros. The clean is very good, the drive needs to have the master up high (just like the 800). You can plug a patch lead in the send/return loop to improve the low end by engaging another tube. They do sound darker and have a harshness to the higher frequencies which is perfect in a band setting. Additionally just about every 800 was used with a solid state pedal in front of it, because it lacked sufficient gain.

A lot of comments state that you need to turn the amp way up to get a good sound. That might be true if you're going for the standard hard rock sound. However, going for something completely different, I like the clean sounds of Marshall, which I think sound warmer than the very clean sounds of Fender amps. Under those circumstances, having the amp at a fairly low volume can produce good results. Microphone placement is crucial too, when getting the right sound for recording. Eventually, I went and got a DSL40 as well, which is a dream of an amp. But, the JCM900 Dual Reverb is a magnificent beast, and sometimes I'll use it for some quiet practice, just because I can. It's a head, sitting on top of a 2x12 cabinet.

Great video. Ya know...I never understood why the Marshall JCM 900 never got much love. Besides the Jubilee (which I have) that I think hands down is the best amp Marshall ever made. Because of the versatility of the Jube to me is why it steals the show. But the JCM 900 is also a favorite of mine. To me it just bleeds rock and roll. But there are some that think it just doesn't rank up there with other Marshall. Which I never understood why.

You can get really clean sounds from a JCM600, that amp also has dual reverb. I have the 2x12 version and it's another under-rated Marshall amp that suffered reputational damage as they were sometimes prone to overheating, due to where the main output valves are placed (underneath the circuit board). Mine's never had any issues since I owned it, I biased the tubes correctly, which mainly prevents any issues. You can still buy JCM600's pretty cheap if you can find one.

Sometimes I run a Boss Blues Driver into the clean channel for a more “classic” OD tone. This amp is very LOUD, so sometimes I put a JHS Little Black Box in the effects loop as an attenuator so that I can crank the amp at lower volumes.

Love the jcm 900. A friend of mine had a full stack 900. No pedals. Just love the sound out of it. He did get rid of it for a jubille which has an insane sound as well. I unfortunately have a 100 watt MG series half stack. But I am not bitchin cause at least I have a Marshall to go with my Les Paul's. However my next amp is a jcm 900 full stack. Always been the amp I have always wanted. But I will definitely be on the lookout for one of these combo amps. Hey can't have too many right? 😉 my wife on the other hand. Just doesn't get it

They are difficult to set in my opinion. The stock jcm 900 cab is too shrill and incorrect setting can leave sour impression real quick. But taking some time with dialing, it can be a great amp, it isn't one of the amp that sound good with everything in 12

@@steviesedge I'm talking from personal experience. Back in the day we wanted a crunchier more open sound and the diode clipping was a little bit compressed and harsh. I was born in 1964 I've been playing guitar professionally since the mid 80s. This is the general consensus at the time people were resistant to diode clipping and you could hear the difference between a non-diode clipping head and a diode clipping head. The jcm 900 was the first Marshall ever to use diode clipping on board.

I have a 50w JCM 900 High Gain Dual Reverb (6L6) and a JCM 2000 DSL 100 (EL34), I run them through a (2) V30 & (2) G12T-75 4x12 cab but my son also has a full V30 4x12 and they shine through both pretty nicely. I need to get my 900 check out because the volume seems kinda low and the tubes don't light up very much ao they might be dying.

Nice, I am hesitating between this Marshall and a Boogie express and I love the way you are managing the gain on the Marshall : not too pushed to keep definition on rythm parts and adding a pedal to push the sound for solos but : is it an overdrive pedal, a boost or what? Can you help me? Regards.

had 2 of these 4502 amps, the first i had for years, thought it was good but a bit harsh sounding if you ran the treble&presence even on half....eventually sold it, but then saw another in the window of cash converters...for £150! They clearly must not have realised what they were selling (probs thought it was a valvestate of summat) anyway i just bought it to sell as i'd moved onto the DSL50 by then...but the short time i did have it revealed this was a much better sounding 4502 than my previous one. No idea why...had it been modded? Was it just better valves in there i don't know it just sounded creamier and less harsh. Was my original one i bought new and had for years somehow just bad? I'll never know...but the 2nd one was noticeably more 'good'er'. Now, these amps were slated for years on numerous guitar forums as they have a diode based dirty channel...so sort of a hybrid of sorts. The driven clean channel was what people always said was better - just like in this video! That said, the diode gain channel thing makes me laugh as everybody was raving about their 800's but sticking a diode in front of in with their OD pedals. Guitarists are odd creatures...especially on the internet. Good vid this! Look forward to the 2nd one!

I just bought a used 1996 Gibson Les Paul with P90s with hardcase for usd1629 and an England made 4 tube JCM900 for usd740. The shop owner recommend me this amp because I said I wanted real classic overdrive sound. He said don’t bother buying new Marshall amp for its very expensive and not as good as jcm900. I hope I have gotten a good deal.

@@guitarexpert2245 I have a 2204 and a 2205. The 800's sound more 80's metal, and bit too nasally for my taste. The SL-X sounds heavier, more modern Metal. @@r1deftone The 800's are bright. But that's why they cut trough the mix so well. That's being said, I prefer the SL-X too for all the reasons you stated. I had a 2204 combo a 1982. It's was just to dam loud. No loop. Not much gain. However if you ever really got to crank one up really loud it will punch you in the chest like no other.
