Let's say your uncle gave you his old tube amp. It's your first one, it's old and doesn't sound like much, but you want to turn it into a modern metal machine - which of these pedals gets you the farthest? We had our friend Sam try to tackle that question in this video.

yeah man, it's a great little pedal! That 100hz knob can work wonders too - at noon, it's neutral, and then either boosts or cuts depending on where you turn the knob.. works just as well to bring some extra beef to a 1x12, as it does to tighten up a flubby 4x12, thing is amazing Thanks for watching! - Sam

@AxePalace
@AxePalace 4 жыл бұрын
considering that they're all built with the intention of being a subtle variation on the same circuit, the biggest difference will probably be made by how you have the knobs turned, and what knobs the pedal offers you for turning. Ex: The MXR can get sounds that virtually none of the other pedals in the video can get, because that 100hz knob boosts everything above noon, and cuts everything under noon.. so if you crank it up, you can get the sound of a TubeScreamer with WAY too much low end, and everything gets kinda fuzzy and weird and 'almost broken' sounding.. The Palisades offers that Bandwidth knob which is a similar idea, but it doesn't offer any frequency-specific boost, and is restricted to predetermined voices, as opposed to a linear. The TS808 and Grid Slammer don't have this kind of thing at all, so the tonal difference is limited more to components used in the tone pot or whatever, and thus much more subtle. thanks for watching and commenting!

crank everything to 10, boost with a proco rat, hook up to a cab loaded with 75w celestions, add a USA B.C. Rich for extra metal points. Or just get a DSL, way more gain and modern.

TS808. The others sound good by themselves and all sound relatively similar. If these were the only options, I'd go TS808 and pick any of the other 3. Probably the MXR or the Grid Slammer, because the Palisades is just too expensive. I also didn't find it jaw dropping in a store, and much prefer od808, soulfood, and vop9.

I love the soul food, but I think it sounds way better when used with a Les Paul or something similar. Sounds thin with my strat. Then again, I'm probably very incompetent.

Got the 2020 stealth model, i stupidly mistaken it for a high gain amp, or say a higher gain version of the SC20 but in turned out to be just a cosmetic. Man all i can say after so many years using 5150s and 6505s the SC20 feels like a clean amp, not even close to the crunch channel of the 5150s and tbh i'm struggling alot to find the right spot😑 even with boosts.
@tubeaddicted485

Same here. I knew that the sc20.is not a highgain amp, but still I can't find the right boost pedal. Also, the 2x12 cabinet is not as I expected.
@omarheavy2009
@omarheavy2009 2 жыл бұрын
Yup, the same here! I bought the stealth for its killer looks but yeah, not satisfied.. we are just used to high gain amps & this amp cleaner than our thoughts 😅 It's known the Boss sd1 works quite well with the Marshall's, I've tried it, tried many other ODS + eq10 in the loop & it was not enough... but among all, I prefer the revv g3, works better than the rest!

@@AxePalace the Mesa doesn't over-color. So many of the jcm800 players in the late 80's/early 90's thrash had theirs modified. They are a great amp tone-wise. but do need that extra push.

I think the JCM sounds best without pedals. Just crank that preamp section. I wouldn’t want to over-color it’s natural glory. If I want to boost solos or add a gain stage, I use something transparent, like a clean boost or a Timmy overdrive. However, I am quite intrigued by that Earthquaker. Nice vid.

That amps eq is set up horribly, way too much presence for a such an already brittle sounding amp. And then to add insult to injury you maxed out tone on the all of the pedals making it even more brittle and ice-picky.
