Absolutely loved the nearly cleans you got when you'd finished tweaking: reminded me of Lou Reed's New York album probably partly because of the chord progression you were playing but there's a very distinctive guitar sound on that album that this nailed for me.

I really love the content of you channel and appreciate your work and honesty. One question off topic, what do you think about tube amp attenuators, in specific the last generation of products with reactive load technology . They seems now widely used but from a tech point of view are they healthy devices to use with our tube amps? Thanks for everything !!

Are you rebiasing that preamp tube, Lyle? Grid leak changes? Cathode resistor changes? Maybe changing out the anode dropping resistor? A combination of all 3? Changing one of those 68Ks out? Heh heh heh! There are a lotta little tricks. It sure sounds wonderful now! Those cleans are to die for.

One of the things I find funny is the fact that Rhoads used 6ca7's not EL34's. Even if they are interchangable, there is a difference. Marshall knows this fact and yet still put EL34's in his signature amp lol. They took pics of the inside of Randy's amps and all of them had big bottle tubes. I've never even seen big bottle EL34's. Another issue is Randy used Altec Lansing 417-8H speakers...which are no longer made and haven't been since the 1990's. You'd think a modern company would make an equivalent to that speaker that would be as affordable as any Celestion speaker. I personally feel that when Rhoads died, the cosmos literally and actively buried his sound....specifically his live sound. He had a very specific Les Paul from an era that didn't last long, he had a pedalboard that was custom built and most if not all of the pedals were modded, he used speakers that we can't get anymore unless used. Intricate details of his gear was either buried or lost through time etc. It's just bizarre!

I came up with a design of a cross line master volume with a dual ganged pot! 2x100k using one side with a capacitor to roll a bit of highs at lower volumes (form less harshness). The pot is cutted on the extremes so that on 10 its completly out of circuit. Sounds better than a Lar Mar master volume (which I think is bright at low volumes)
@kbkman7742
@kbkman7742 2 жыл бұрын
I like to put a cross line master in all my old amps, if there is an existing hole in a good spot.. Only for the time I have them. If they ever get sold, a couple minutes with an iron and they're gone. The suck in terms of useability (I am sure there are ways to address the touchiness), but for home use and not drawing noise complaints I think they are a useful way to bring volumes down. I have never felt compelled to use an attemuator.

SM57 on a Veteran 30. No EQ, compression, reverb, or any other processing. And I didn't touch the tone controls throughout. Removed variables, but the amp could shape things more if needed. In a studio this would all be tweaked, which is what we are used to hearing.
@Toymortal
@Toymortal 2 жыл бұрын
@@PsionicAudio I can concur on this. Distorted Marshall type amps almost always end up with a lot of studio EQ added to them at around 7-8khz to add some bite to the sound. They always sound a bit muddy when recorded.

Gotta remember Randy goosed it with a MXR Distortion+ and a MXR EQ (with a good about of cuts and boosts), so if you’re referring to Randy’s tone, that’s HUGE part.

why did Marshall add the additional 1.2k grid stoppers on V1A & B? the earlier RR revision didn't have them apparently
@bobbihomo2517

to get rid of any potential for parasitic microphonics! Ideally, you want the grid resistor residing on the valve, as the 1.2k's are!

You should make a simple attenuator, or buy something like a Suhr Reactive Load to test all your loud amps at a reasonable volume.

@@PsionicAudio I don't know about the Red Box, but it looks like it's more of a speaker sim which, going into a speaker, would make it sound bad. But the Suhr or UA, or any other attenuator shouldn't do any big EQ things like the Red Box.

since i'm new to your channel, old as dirt and dumb as a rock i would like to get your professional opinion about an amp i bought in 1987 and never used .... i never used it because it's very loud and it's called a marshall silver jubilee with 2-12 inch speakers .... it weighs as much as my old ampeg VT22 and that earned me 2 hernia operations .... is that jubilee the same as a JCM 800 ???? is there a mod to make it less bright ??? thank you
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 2 жыл бұрын
The silver jubilee is a unique circuit and one from '87 could be very valuable in today's market. Sell it, get a smaller lighter amp that suits your needs, and you'd probably have enough left over to get a new guitar too

@@davidisenberg125 three thumbs up 👍👍👍! One for Danny Gatton, one for an Echoplex, and one for Danny Gatton's Echoplex! One of my few regrets musically is that I never got to see him play. @@goodun2974 it was'nt one of his personal ones, he kept those under lock and key because they were grey and had tubes... the one he sold me was a SS one and i think it was around 75 bucks... i loved it when he said i don't use distortion boxes and we would tell him the amps on 12 and it only goes to 10 so you kinda don't need a box.... what an amazing player and guy....

@@davidisenberg125 , I actually bought a Roland Space Echo a while ago (the pro version with balanced inputs) that I haven't had a chance to play with; it's missing the tape so I'll have to buy one or have somebody make one for me. They're supposed to be a somewhat more modern version of the Echoplex with additional features.. I am told that the dub reggae guys particularly like them. I brought some test equipment and other stuff with it but I don't think I paid any more for it than you did for yours.

In defense of Lyle and everyone else protecting their investment…Lyle owes us nothing and does not need to give away all his secrets. It’s fair to accept what he shows and teaches us is more than generous. If you follow closely and have a decent understanding of the subject, he gives so many tricks and tips away. Sharing is caring doesn’t work since there are many people waiting to steal someone’s idea and market as there own.
@tete1805

Well, I don't think that this is how we move forward and progress as a community. I don't think that Lyle (although I'm not confortable using his first name without knowing him personally) has anything to gain by hiding anything. I would even argue the contrary. Anyway, I don't mean to offend anybody. I'm sorry if I did and I apologize. I like to see other people actual physical implementations when possible but I understand Lyle is not required to share his. Moving on.
