Even if he didn't die and someone found him, or if somehow he managed to exit the game; he'd still have to live the rest of his life knowing that the characters in his own world outsmarted him and left him stranded in space. He'd have to go on knowing that he's a true failure, even in a digital fake world. And I'm sure he would never be able to look at his co-workers in the same way. So even if he didn't die in real life, digital karma certainly destroyed his depraved ego.

The funny thing is he could have easily stopped them. All he had to do was exit the game and the USS Callister would have grinded to a halt as the ship cannot move without him in the game. He could have just left the game, let it patch and update and then go back in to punish the mutineers. But instead of acting logically, he turned into a little child throwing a tantrum because things weren't going his way.

God, this has become one of my favorite episodes. So well done. It was wrong that he took his co-workers DNA and what he did with the copy of the director's son too. I guess the driving point here is that ultimately, they weren't real. The same way we kill characters in our video games for fun, just more "detailed". A lot of people that have played Skyrim have Fus Ro Da'd Lydia off the mountainside, but to be killed for that would seem a little overreactive...

So ended Robert Daly, fearless Captain of the USS Callister. His spacecraft shut down as the stars of his world faded, and he floated through the endless void of cyberspace for the rest of time, never to return. If I'm not mistaken, the lyrics (playing at this point in the song) are "sleep in heavenly peace". This must have been a conscience choice and a callback to a threat he had made to the crew earlier: "what I'm going to do will be fucking biblical". With good justification, Walton considers him a super fucked up god. Keeping the lyrics to 'Silent Night' in mind, it could symbolize not only his imminent death, but his immediate collapse from power.

Same, but I realized he either got deleted, or died from dehydration like 3 days later, so he had at most 3 days to live, and in his situation I would just meditate and come to terms with dying.

This vaguely reminds me of Brain-Death in Neuromancer. Where Wintermute would communicate with case by making him flatline. Except now, Daly flatlines in a void. So he died, IMO.
@Jarsia5 жыл бұрын
Daly was a horrible person, but we do have to consider how he got that way. Even Walton admitted he treated him as a doormat, but since Daly killed his digital son, he no longer felt bad. Everyone at the company treated him like shit even though arguably he was the reason the company had a successful product and subsequently they all had jobs. Daly was once probably an alright guy, just a little odd and introverted, but years of resentment for being treated like shit made him spiteful and sadistic. Even Lowry tells Cole to "give him a wide berth" because he's a bit odd. Humans are social animals, and if people treat someone like a creep because they arent socially adept, they put them in a catch 22 by denying them the social interaction that could help normalize them and in doing so turn them into the creep they accuse them of being(notice how his demeanour was significantly more friendly and likeable when Cole first showed up and actually treated him like a human being). Being treated the way people treated Daly fucks with people's heads. When we hear stories about kids who shoot up their schools, it's easy to just condemn them(and certainly, it's not a defensible course of action), but does anyone stop to think about how they got to that point? People arent "born evil", and normal, happy, well adjusted people dont go on murder sprees. I guess my point is people have to be accountable for how they treat others. We cant just brush off everything as "nobody is responsible for the actions of others". We can influence the lives of other people, for better or worse. We tend to be eager to accept when someone says "X was such an inspiration in my life" or "Y really helped me when I was in trouble". On the other hand if someone says "X ruined my childhood" or "Y held me back in my career", we generally pass it off as someone blaming others for their own failures. Now that is a possibility, but it's foolish to admit we can have positive influences in the lives of others but not acknowledge we can have negative consequences as well. Sometimes peoples lives are genuinely ruined by others. Every monster in society was created by said society. Be mindful of how you treat others. A few moments of reaching out and showing genuine empathy and friendship to someone who had experienced a lifetime of being ostracised could be the difference that keeps them from going over the edge and killing someone.

“Every monster in society was created by said society” Wait, there are serial killers that grew up in loving homes. Anyways, Walton may have treated him like shit but no one else did. At least not beyond what you’d expect from someone that dresses like a hobo to work, keeps his head down and doesn’t speak up. Going unnoticed isn’t the same as being treated like shit. You have to grow up, pick your head up and command respect.

I am unsure how to feel about this. Yes, Daly made life a living hell for the NPCs, but he was a real person, and I sympathized with him in how he hated his life and used the game as an escape. Plus, video games and the NPCs in them are created for the sole purpose of entertaining the humans who play them.

Without getting philosophical, I think it's fair to say only a living entity can express true consciousness. If we developed a robot seemingly intelligent and conscious, would it still be conscious, or just a robot? Clearly it would still be a robot, just like these NPCs are not truly conscious, just a bunch of code.

He didn't just make NPCs to fuck around with. He knowingly created sentient minds to fuck with, and that's more fucked up than I could ever have sympathy for. Yes, I get it, life can suck and sometimes you just wanna live in a game world. But that doesn't mean going psychotic on real feeling people. And yes, as they are, these NPCs are real feeling people. He was a really fucked up person and I'm glad they essentially killed him by the end.

Daly didn't deserve to die - he took out his valid frustrations (from being bullied in real life) on video game characters. If you were given the exact same information as Daly, this is a perfectly harmless outlet. Game!Walton may have realized the error of his ways, but don't forget that Real!Walton is very much an asshole and regularly torments Daly. Just goes to show how eager people are to judge when they have the benefit of perfect hindsight.
@LuLe2322 жыл бұрын
Okay buddy, there is the minor detail that those characters weren't your typical video game characters, they were perfect personality constructs capable of full range of emotions. Daly copied them without permission and forced cooperation by any means. Whatever the legal stance may be towards those constructs, they have my full support in exacting vengeance. Also any of: boohoo Walton was a dick, arguments fall apart the moment he does this to other people.

Pretty awful to know that given the episode was set during the christmas holiday, Daly set the display on his apartment door to say he didn`t want to be disturbed and suffered the fate of either getting mentally trapped in his game or died as a result of being unable to exit the game before it got wiped. Either way, by the time anyone, a neighbour, friend ( if he even had any ) or coworker come by to see how he is doing, it`ll likely be far too late.
