As director of Speckled Truth, an organization that, among other things, posts pictures of absolutely gargantuan speckled trout to social media, Chris Bush knows when and where the big girls are biting.
So a year and a half ago, when I fished with Bush near his home waters of Corpus Christi, Texas, he mentioned I should come back during the winter and fish with him near Port Mansfield, where the giants live.
I wasn't able to make it happen last year, but early in 2023, we put some dates on the calendar for December, and lined it up with Bush's buddy Capt. Joe Prado, who guides out of the South Texas port.
Last week, I made the 10-hour journey from my home in South Louisiana, and entered a world where my favorite fish species grows to sizes that must be seen to be believed.

Nice trip. I live near a bay in Texas that is known for big trout. (East Bay Matagorda) Because it is shallow, we were decimated by the freeze a couple of years ago. Creel surveys put us back to only 35% of normal, so we've been slow to come back. I have only caught one 27" since the freeze, but I love fishing in a place where at least there's a chance. My best day was a 28" and two 26" trout. I'm fishing mostly for reds in the marsh ponds these days, but I still have to break out a super spook when conditions look right. The big trout hit the Hogie swimming shad soft plastics that are made right up the road, but the super spook my favorite.

I used to stock my freezer every fall off the lighted piers in Palacios. I would go during the week around 11pm to avoid the crowd. Lots of fun. Since I bought my kayak, I fish mostly in Matagorda now, but Palacios has some really good bank and pier fishing.

@RockPolitics
@RockPolitics 16 күн бұрын
There are certain times of the year when the mullet will swim up and rub sides with your lure. I've always thought it was part of their spawning ritual, but I've never been able to confirm that. But if you're fishing with a lure that has trebles, you'll snag some of them in the side like that first fish you reeled in. Also, fishing a Corky in the cooler months, I always like to let it perfectly still when it hits the water. Just let it do its job and sink slowly for at least 5-6 seconds. Then make your first twitch solo and subtle. I think they're drawn to the plop of the bait hitting, and when they finally see that little bit of movement they're after it. I catch a disproportional percentage of my big trout on that first twitch.

Great video. I know Chris is very good about breakdown the "why's" has he or you done segment on why they had more big trout caught and you had more reds? The obvious go-to is cadence, but is that all? As you said... you're in the same area, same baits, cadence and presentation is the only thing to consider right?

Dumb question but what is “ the major”? Major times the bite turns on?
@MarshManMasson

Yes. TBH, I've never put much stock in it, but these boys swear by it. And there did seem to be some correlation between when the major period was and when the big trout turned on.
