For 10 minutes we watched this marten chase this snowshoe hare before catching it

So the marten chases the hare down the road away from the camera, then the film just stops. What happened? Then we have a closer shot of the marten in the snow. Then the hare is running towards the camera and decides to turn around and run back down the road. Then the marten does this, the hare does that … and so on. This is basically a chase scene from scooby doo. The only thing missing is them running in and out of different doors. If these film clips are of the same marten chasing the same hare, I’d love to know how the camera managed to catch all of this? And why there is such a lack of continuity in the film overall?

I'm, also, surprised that it caught the hare. It was so far ahead of the marten and the marten doesn't have the hare's long legs or bounce. I think the hare's mistake once going into the bushes where it couldn't keep its advantageous distance from the marten.
@martinslvsten4282 жыл бұрын
If you want to be really floored, you can find a video on youtube where a stout, which weighs half a pound at most, chases down a wild rabbit, jumps on its back, and kills it with a neckbite. Edit: Found the video for you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frSSpNmiy5mRYWg.html

You probably can tame them, though you'd gave to get one really young and and you'd have to go through a few generations before they were properly tame, but people keep ferrets and they are very similar creatures (only ferrets are domesticated).

Nice video.. I watched this myself in Northern Ontario twice. The marten just keeps following and the snowshoe keeps circling back to its home range until the marten gives up or catches it.The 2 times I seen it the rabbit won once and lost once.

If you listen carefully, you can hear the rabbit start screaming at 1:42. That's when the marten finally got the hare.
@sorellman2 жыл бұрын
It looks like the hare was placed on the road by the guy who was making this video. The marten came after a dead hare, with the camera being conveniently placed at the ground level right by the dead hare for a great shot.

@misconceptions5613 Жыл бұрын
@@sorellman it was probably a wild hare. Hares don’t have burrows like rabbits so they just run around. And he probably scared the marten away after the hare was killed to get the shot of it coming back

No, the author of the video probably did NOT shoot the hare. Turn up your sound. At 1:42, the marten disappears into the bushes where the rabbit just went. At 1:43, you can faintly (but clearly) hear the rabbit screaming and squealing. The hare probably ran into the bushes and then froze. Martens are supposed to have a good sense of smell, so by holding still, the hare would just be signing its own death warrant. So I highly doubt that the author of the video shot the hare. There was no need, the marten caught it, as you can clearly hear at 1:43-1:46. What the author DID probably do- once the hare was dead- was separate it from the marten, drag it out onto the road, and set up a camera. The marten isn't going to run away very far, and this allowed the author to grab nice close up shots of the marten dragging the hare back into the woods for a meal.

Unfortunately, I do not speak English well, so I did not read all the comments. Firstly, it's not a marten, but a sable. Shooted, most likely, in Siberia. Secondly, the voice of the shed hare-whitecable is clearly heard on the video. This is me to the fact that the video is not a fraud. I apologize for the bad English (used Google-translator).
@kroschelfilms5 жыл бұрын
This is not staged. I raise pine martens and tame them. The chase went over a large area for a prolonged time. The snowshoe is a young one and the marten is an adult female . I believe the videographer probably separated the marten from the hare after the kill and put it out in the open of the road again and set camera up and just ran it until marten came back to claim its prize... Very educational , bizarre, and normal daily practice for pine martens …..

Marten's reaction is definitely one of surprise to see Hare's dead and still.... So He might have not killed it.... It could be not the same marten to find the hare dead.... while the chasing marten is still lost somewhere panting trying to catch its breath after a frutiless chase.... It's a mystery as to the hare's death, I can only think a heart attack fron fear and exhaustion
@msblue10036 жыл бұрын
it could also be the same marten but a different hare dead... It's a great video, but how could the videomaker chase the marten though the woodland bit and get to the death scene with the camera never wobbling?... So the videomaker must have got to the hare before the marten, set himself with the camera and waited for the marten to arrive

lol the marten definitely didn't kill that hare, watch how he walks up to it like "well hello there". If he killed it on his own they wouldn't have had time to position the camera, and he wouldn't have left the hare there. It'd also be bloody from the marten actually biting through it's neck/throat for the kill. I mean marten's are so cute so any footage is nice, but come on
