This was a backstage session at Glastonbury in 2005. It was my first view of either Wainwright, and I was charmed. The song I believe to be Loudon's, and I have since heard it sung beautifully by Kate and Anna McGarrigle.

The thing I love about this family is the way they've brought the tradition of family and parlor music back to us. So important. Everyone can do it. We did it in my family. That everyday music gets you through the day. My grandmother sang like Linda Ronstadt -- beautiful voice. I still remember her doing dishes, housework singing these gorgeous songs, teaching me how to harmonize, etc. That tradition is so important.

She sounds so much like her mom. I hope she carries on the work of preserving and creating folk music.

These ppl deserve to have good careers in music. Martha has been overlooked. She is a natural.

I remember watching part of this and wondering who they were and how great it was. I then lost track of it and rediscovered them years later. Thanks for posting!

They were probably listening to it before they were born... Their mother wrote before 1973 and their father recorded it in 1973. They were born in 1973 and 1976.

Thank you for posting. I have been searching for this performance since I first saw it during the TV coverage of the Glastonbury Festival weekend. I didn't realise it was 8 years ago. Nice to think I have been an admirer of these two ever since :-)

I'd love to hear them sing the full version. I googled the lyrics and found there are a few more verses.

It's crazy how the left and right signals are crossed and how rufus has the high harmony. I had their voices mixed up for a while.

's E Don't know any other singers who harmonize as well as this family - Wainwrights and McGarrigles. Also with other singers. Just love Rufus and Boy George singing 'New Year's Eve.

This was from a Glastonbury Festival broadcast on the BBC a few years ago. Both Rufus and Martha were singing as seperate acts but the Beeb got them to do a special duet. The song is of course written by Dad (Loudon Wainwright).
@marilon4 жыл бұрын
No. Sung by dad, written by mum.

I agree. Neither of their parents enjoyed what you might call mass appeal - both being hard to pigeonhole. Rufus has a natural talent for self promotion, and the Shrek thing wouldn't have done him any harm either. Also, never underestimate the pink vote for someone as openly gay as he.
@marilon4 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. The gay community sometimes is it's own worst enemy.
