The thing I love about this family is the way they've brought the tradition of family and parlor music back to us. So important. Everyone can do it. We did it in my family. That everyday music gets you through the day. My grandmother sang like Linda Ronstadt -- beautiful voice. I still remember her doing dishes, housework singing these gorgeous songs, teaching me how to harmonize, etc. That tradition is so important.

Her voice is so like her mom's and aunt's-national treasures of Canada.

Thank you for posting. I have been searching for this performance since I first saw it during the TV coverage of the Glastonbury Festival weekend. I didn't realise it was 8 years ago. Nice to think I have been an admirer of these two ever since :-)

It's always too short. Everytime I watch this I wish they would go on singing.

I'd love to hear them sing the full version. I googled the lyrics and found there are a few more verses.

This was from a Glastonbury Festival broadcast on the BBC a few years ago. Both Rufus and Martha were singing as seperate acts but the Beeb got them to do a special duet. The song is of course written by Dad (Loudon Wainwright).

I believe that Kate McGarrigle wrote it and Loudon recorded it on his album Attempted Mustache.

I agree. Neither of their parents enjoyed what you might call mass appeal - both being hard to pigeonhole. Rufus has a natural talent for self promotion, and the Shrek thing wouldn't have done him any harm either. Also, never underestimate the pink vote for someone as openly gay as he.
