Chan’s opponent, Hwang Jang Lee, was a Tae Kwon Do expert and former military man. He was known for having lightning fast kicks and even killed a man in a street fight from his power. Dude is a legend.

Yep, Thunder Leg's kicks were a highlight in the film. I'm always impressed how high he could execute his flying kicks. Very sleek.

@@danielcook7975 Funny you should say that. Jackie actually got cast as one of the thugs in one of Bruce's films. I forget which one, but when the scene was over, Jackie, by his own admission, exaggerated how badly he got hit by Bruce all so he would pay him more attention because Bruce was so concerned he went overboard in the scene.

@@theraiden9631 Jackie was a better Chun-Li in his few minutes than that Chun-Li movie. They still changed the name of E. Honda to E. Honde (at least in some versions), supposedly cause producers or someone didn't want anything to do with the car company or so. Don't think Capcom ever had any issues with the name, but what you gonna do.

Fun fact: Jackie's master is played by Yuen Siu-tien, who is the father of Yuen Woo-pin, legendary Hong Kong action director/fight choreographer ( Crouching Tiger, Matrix trilogy, Kill Bill, tons of Jet Li & Donnie Yen movies) and he was the director of Drunken Master.

One of my most favorite Jackie Chan films was Rumble in the Bronx and the scene where he goes "Beast Mode" on Tony's gang members proves why he is the real-life master of Anything Goes Martial Arts from the anime/manga Ramna 1/2 as Jackie pretty much uses everything his martial arts skills/body, and the entire environment as weapons.

My dude. You and I got a similar taste. The scene in Tony’s gang hideout is fighting scene and action movie perfection. The chairs, the pool table, the ski and my favorite the fridge doors. Absolute classic. There is billion dollar production that use all sorts of camera work, wires, CGI, stuntmen and expert choreography that can’t match Jackie Chan and his creative genius and physical prowess. All you need is a still camera and him. Magic.

I LOVE me some Jackie, I’ve been watch him since I first saw Cannonball run in the theaters as a kid. I would say he’s my favorite martial artist but he might be my favorite actor of all time

A lot of the combat in Karate Kid was taken from Tang Soo Do according to the actors. William Zbaka who plays Johnny actually trained in the Tang Soo Do style. The second movie is actually my favorite as I got to see some of the places where they filmed when I was a teenager. Also Rob Garrison whose famous line was "Put him in a body bag Johnny" died a few years ago of Cancer. They did an episode on Kobra Kai where all the old game got back together and we got to see all of them one more time before he died. They actually worked with him while he was doing Chemo to film when he was feeling up to it to make sure they didn't wear him out.

That one with Rob Garrison is incorrect actually. The actor himself didn't know he was sick at the time. The deterioration in his health came a few months later and was very sudden. He was hospitalised for liver and kidney issues and died in one month. The creators originally had planned for his role to return in season 3 in flashback scenes..

The original Karate Kid still holds up. Sure some of the choreography is a little wack. But the movie’s main focus is the relationship with Daniel and Miyagi while also dealing with the themes of bullying, which are both elements the film succeeds at portraying.

One thing about today’s movies with fighting scenes. It’s skips around a lot it’s never one motion. The scenes we’re watching the camera is far enough away where it shows every movie, no cutting in and out.

That's a generalization. When it happens in movies (new or old) is because the people doing the fighting couldn't do it properly so they needed cuts to hide the issues, the editor is bad at his job and thinks unnecessary cuts make the action more intense, there isn't enough money and time to do as many takes as you need to get it right (something you could do in Hong Kong action movies because it was a lot cheaper to do and safety wasn't as important, Jackie talks about it in a few interviews) so they are forced to make a cut. You get the first issue when you have famous actors that arn't martial artists and you insist on seeing their face in fights, you get the second issue when you get editors and directors who arn't known for action movies to work on action movies and you get the money and time issue constantly in Holliwood. See the Raid movies. See Jackies Hollywood movies (they have a lot more dumb cuts).

Miyagi stole the belt from the Black Belt Administrator that was signing in everybody when they arrived at the tournament. He slightly distracted him and handed it over to Alley, Daniel's girlfriend. Hope that helped. 😄

The old guy training Jackie in Drunken Master was also from the Peking Opera, so he would have had a good understanding of what Jackie was doing. He's the father of Yuen Woo Ping.

My sensei always told me to look at my opponent's eyes. It was like you said in which your peripheral vision only sees the face. She is an excellent sensei and I explained her as to why I looked at the middle of the body, to keep the peripheral on my whole opponent. I loved when she said "Makes a lot of sense, if it works for you, keep doing it, we're not robots and we all have differences in techniques to achieve the same result".

My personal favorite Jackie Chan movie is City Hunter (based on the manga of the same name). In it, Jackie's character Ryu has a fight with another henchman of the baddie. After he gets zapped by an arcade machine, Ryu sees the henchman as Ken. Then, he fights "Ken" as different characters, using some of their moves. Ryu tries E. Honda (renamed "E. Honde" in the film due to Jackie having a deal with Mitsubishi at the time), Guile, and Dhalsim but is beaten. He finally defeats "Ken" as Chun-Li. Yes, Jackie wears a _qipao_ and is still, in my opinion, the best Chun-Li cosplayer of all time.

Jackie Chan was performing what is called "Eight Immortals Drunken Fist / 八仙醉拳" One of the 8 immortals is a Female, so that was where the 'Sissy karate' came in.

The Ref at the tournament for the Karate kid was the IRL choreographer, I think Ralph Macchio had a background in dancing, but was encouraged not to practice as hard as the other cast members so he'd still appear to be the amateur underdog. And yeah Miyagi stole the black belt when he was registering Daniel to fight.

Daniel has a black belt because when they're checking in for the tournament, Mr. Miyagi is asked what belt Daniel is. He just says "black" and then steals a belt out of a bag.

Yeah, lots of feels for Karate Kid movie. I like to think of it now as an introduction, or gateway to martial arts movies. It draws you in and then you find the classic's and you find out they didn't use wires at all. You feel like the actors were magic then, not that they aren't cool now. But So much skill was present in the past that you don't see now a days. Insurance companies being what they are, and we want our actors to be around for a long time. Just so we can say I loved you in this and that to them and not a tombstone or picture.

I read somewhere that the head kick thing actually was legal given the year this tournament took place. The kicking in head thing became illegal like a year or two after this timeframe. "However, we really don't even need to go that far, as the answers are all clear in the film itself. Daniel oddly didn't actually check on the rules of the tournament until they were literally AT the tournament, and it was his girlfriend, Ali, who explained, "Everything above your waist is a point. You can hit the head, sternum, kidneys, ribs." And then, in the tournament, kicks to the faces were REPEATEDLY counted as legal points!" Then shows evidence of Johnny and Dutch both receiving points from kicking their opponents in the face before the final match.

The Kung Fu era of Jackie's career features the most complex action of his career. His pre-fame films like Snake & Crane Arts Of Shaolin, Shaolin Wooden Men, Dragon Fist, Spiritual Kung Fu may be incredibly dated but if you understand how the scenes were realised (long takes, ludicrously long shooting hours) any laughter and sneering at such should soon disappear. "We're just not in that era anymore" - the shapes era was the best and this is the form martial arts cinema needs to return to IMO It'll be incredibly difficult because frankly the talent pool doesn't exist ATM (for numerous reasons) but the shapes era was the Golden era of HK action cinema - no shadow of a doubt in my mind.

My favorite Jackie Chan movie has always been Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, the fight choreography in that is so amazing, and they are not playing around, in the final fight Jackie actually really lost a teeth due to being kicked in the face, and they even kept that take in the movie so you can see it happen.

I just wanted to mention that the Karate Kid “illegal head kick” is false. How I Met Your Mother tried to say it is illegal too, but Daniel’s gf even mentions that strikes from the waist up to the head are legal. Johnny’s attacks like the elbow to the knee were illegal.

If memory serves in competition karate punches to the midsection are legal but punches to the head are illegal. Kicks to the body and head are okay as long as they are above the waist.

I'd love seeing similar react videos to Jade Claw/Crystal Fist. That's still one of my favorite kung fu movies growing up (even more than kid with the golden arm and 5 deady venoms).

I've always loved the 1994 version, The Legend of Drunken Master. But I definitely need to go back and watch the 1978 original again, it's been too long!

This is great! I'd love to see more of this! Me and my dad used to buy kung fu movies every week (our father-daughter bonding) which is how I wound up with a collection of over 200 kung fu movies, so this is triggering a lot of nostalgia! It would be great to see them react to some Sammo Hung movies like Eastern Condors or Enter The Fat Dragon, or some Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock films. Mr Vampire (The first one) would also be hilarious. Although if you want some absolutely ridiculous movies to react to there's Fantasy Mission Force (Starring Jackie Chan, Brigitte Lin, and Jimmy Wang Yu) or A Heroic Fight, wall to wall complete insanity! 😆

You should both watch Karate Kid, it's clear from your comments that you haven't seen it or don't remember what happened. Daniel only had a couple of months training with Mr. Miyagi, so he's not supposed to be that good. He got the black belt because Mr. Miyagi snagged the belt when they just walked in to the competition building and found out that only black belts could compete at the level Cobra Kai was doing. It's a fantastic movie, you're missing out!

Can't wait for them to dive into the Shaw Brothers catalog or Golden Harvest. My first three choices from Shaw Brothers would be The Five Deadly Venoms, The Crippled Masters, and The Water Margin. Chef's kiss 💋. As for Golden Harvest, Police Story (OG), Wheels on Meals (Three Dragons special 😁), and Once Upon a Time in China (1&2). Awesome sauce all around.

In the Karate Kid, they established earlier in the tournament montage that kicks to the face are legal. Daniel is fighting Dutch, Dutch kicks Daniel in the face. Daniel even rubs his eye because of the contact. They gave Dutch a point for that kick, so kicks to the face are legal. The Crane Kick is a legal move in the movie, it would never fly (pun intended) in a real tournament or fight, but it is legal. Ali even tells Daniel how to score points before his first fight. You can hit the *head*, the sternum, kidneys and the ribs.
