In this video I share with you my my review of the Martin DX1e acoustic electric guitar brand new from Martin Guitars. This is the Koa HPL edition of the guitar that costs $499 brand new. In this price range there are a lot of guitars that sound good. However, this one really shines! It's HPL construction is rugged and durable as a travel guitar while still maintaining classic Martin tone and playability.
In this video you will get three different audio examples.
The Fishman MX pickup audio with EQ set to flat, then set to 100% to achieve a scooped out mids sound, and finally a blend of the two with the addition of the Rode NT1 microphone at the 12th fret for a more natural and ambient sound.

I bought this guitar the other day, was so excited to see a Martin for the price. It blew almost everything else in that price range away. It was just such a full sounding guitar and the feel of the guitar was on another level compared to everything else around it. I have always struggled with acoustics and their feel but this one is special. There’s a reason Martins are loved as they are

Nice video! I bought one 3 weeks ago at GC because I like the sound and its durability. HPL is a very cool invention. I can take it to the beach and camping or just tailgating. A really good guitar player can make any guitar sound awesome. It's all in your playing. I also own a big baby Taylor, an Epiphone EJ 200ec, and a parlor-size Recording King. They all have their own distinct sound and I love them all. I leave them all on a guitar stand so I can always play them. \m/

Personally I love the fact I can afford a new martin guitar. Part of it is seeing that name on the headstock, which is a bit of name snobbery, I know....but there's a reason it's respected. I went into a shop about 3 months ago to treat myself find my bday . Was prepared to spend quite a lot but ended up taking a used xseries. To me it sounded and played just as well as the more expensive models. As a Scot, not spending a lot made me particularly happy, i can tell you. It's not the best looking martin I've ever seen but I'd have no problem changing it for a prettier xseries next bday. I don't have any need to go full wood now. If you know what I mean....

I purchased one when they first came out , Same model . I got mine at GC . I tried several at this price point. I was impressed with the sound and the feel. I was conflicted on the richlite finger board it felt kind of hard. It didn't take long for me to get used to it. We live in a very humid region . I wanted to take it around outside inside inconsistent weather without worrying about it warping. So if you want a guitar that looks good sounds good and has the badge of honor "Martin" I recommend it. The sound is consistent. No regrets.

well I can tell you my 20 year old dx1 guitar with micarta which is an older brand of richlite i believe. has some grooves at the top frets lol. still sounds great though. Interestingly the next up the current x series, DX2E, is the only Martin model I think on the website that lists Katalox as the bridge and fret. A Mexican hardwood. I think the Mexicans have some pride in making that model lol. I mean everything in road series only richlite I believe lol.

Wonderful, informative video but it would be even better if perhaps you did a different camera set up. For almost the entire video the mic is in the way. So I'm looking into getting a better guitar from the one I currently have (Ibanez AEG18Lii)... I've been looking for about a week now and at first I thought I wanted a guitarlele so I could travel with it, but I didn't like the nylon strings or overall sound. It was also too small. Then I took a look at the baby Taylor (also too small) and now I'm past the guitarlele stage. I'm looking at the GS Mini, Martin LX1REL, and Epiphone EJ-200SCE (all left handed guitars, as I've been playing lefty for around 5 years). I may be able to spend some extra money and purchase a Martin X Series Style Special GPC Koa HPL cutaway Acoustic electric guitar. Im struggling to understand which one sounds the best. It's harder for me because I can't test them out in person (guitar stores never carry lefties in stock, I always have to order them) so I'm hoping you can help me. I know the Taylor GS Mini doesn't have a pre-amp but I would be adding a ES Go after purchasing it. So really, it's a question of which one sounds the best. The GS Mini, Martin LX1REL, Epiphone EJ-200SCE, or Martin X Series Style Special GPC Koa HPL Acoustic Electric? Your help is greatly appreciated, thank you😁

Hey Leo! Thanks for reaching out. Personally this is gonna be dependent on what kind of sound you like. A dreadnought is gonna have typically a larger sound than a grand auditorium. Usually solid wood does tend to sound better in my opinion than HPL however these do sound great for the money. I have numerous student who have the GS Mini and love it. I believe it only has a solid wood tho. The back and sides are layered wood. Tbh you can’t go wrong with the Martin x series. I have many students who own these and have never heard any complaints. Another company however in a similar price range that does have solid wood guitars is Seagull. They offer a lot of bang for your buck. Additionally I recommend looking at Eastman as well!

I’d say this guitar is comparable to the Taylor 114ce. Which is very nice for only $649. I’ve always been a sucker for Taylor’s but, I may buy a Martin
@JoshuaKrell
@JoshuaKrell 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s fairly comparable. Martin also makes a solid top where is $649 which would be basically a pretty exact equivalent. It all just comes down to what you like. Generically speaking for me as someone who has owned higher end Taylor’s and Martins, Taylor’s sound decent in a really busy mix as they have a pretty thin and bright sound. Martin will give you more body and warmth and always seem to sound more full on there own. It just goes into different wood types and sizes. But usually Taylor’s are brighter across the board. If that’s something you like than go that way. More warmth grab a Martin any day over Taylor.

I really had no idea until I watched that. So, I'm trying to decide between a DX1e and a LAVA ME PRO carbon fiber. The only thing making me nervous with the Martin is the neck and possibly the bracing. If that were HPL I'd probably run out and buy one. Its laminate neck might still be ok. @@eduardorojasjimenez883 tbh, nothing will ever beat solid wood. I have recently had a lot of experience with a ton of high end carbon fiber guitars and while it’s great for humidity ect it still isn’t there! For the money man I’d look into Eastman’s line. They make one of the best solid wood guitars on a budget around. I’ve had over 30 of my students in the last year and half buy Eastmans. Across the board they’re fantastic!

The size is the differing factor. The dx1e is a dreadnought size guitar. The 000-x2e is a triple 0 sized guitar. Typically dreadnoughts are best for strumming. A triple 0 won’t sound as good for strumming but will have a more focused sound for finger style and picking.

None of my solid wood guitars were affected.

Which the best yamaha FG TA or this guitar ?
@JoshuaKrell
@JoshuaKrell 4 жыл бұрын
The Yamaha definitely has some points that the Martin doesn’t. I have a student who picked it up a while ago. Tonally I would say due to solid wood construction it does sound better than this particular Martin, however it also more expensive. I have a number of students with Road series martins (around the same street price as this Yamaha) and I would say they do beat out the Yamaha for sure! So I would say in answer to your question the comparison wouldn’t be a fair one due to this Martin being HPL and the Yamaha being solid wood and more expensive... but point to Yamaha because of those things and the built in FX!

The 0x1e is a much smaller body style then the dreadnought dx1e. Usually smaller bodies are a more focused sounding for fingerpicking but they don't sound as good as a dreadnought will for strumming. I have a student that put one in his 1962 Martin D21 and it sounds nearly as good as a mic outside the body. Even still I always prefer I microphone over any pickup. For the money the pickup does the job in this one. It's not stellar but then again I haven't heard one from Fishman that is.. But I agree with you it doesn't sound great with EQ flat, which is why most player's will never leave it flat.
