Actor Martin Freeman explained why he hopes he's never asked to play Tim in The Office again and why ending the programme added to its success.
The star of The Hobbit said they hoped for was a regular following, but what they got was more like a pop act.
This clip is originally from Richard Bacon 16 April.

Not much comedy that you can say that about. It needs to capture something of the human condition that is genuine and separated from any fad and current affairs. The Office, Peep Show and Fonejacker I believe will always be funny in some way.

So awesome to see him share the same sentiment as I. The brilliance of the office to me, is that the entire thing is hilarious as hell, then as it comes to an end all of the small little storylines begin wrapping up and you realise how emotionally invested you are. It goes from a comedy to one of the greatest love stories ever told. David Brent goes from a fool you want to see fail to someone you are suddenly rooting for. The fact his final passages in season 2 and the second Christmas special are so contrary to his usual dialogues and full of wisdom make it obvious Ricky and Steve had this planned all along. It is genius.

I've gone off Ricky in recent years, mostly because of his latent career revisionism. The two best things he has ever done are The Office and Extras and, if the opportunity presents itself, he'll happily give people, usually Americans, the impression that they weren't collaborative efforts. Merchant brought a structure and discipline to those shows that they wouldn't have had otherwise. Actually, they'd never have been made without Steve, because he was the one who got them in the door at the BBC.

Derek kind of had the same kind of flavour that Merchant brought for the frist season because of Karl Pilkington. His character giving a basic outline of how he sees Ricky's character in that thing and the firm serious scenes he were in, he wasn't acting, he was actually arguing with the guys who were arguing with him. When Karl left the show, that's when it went to shit.

Ricky has not only done his best in the last four or five years to revise his best years as solo efforts, he also took the legacy of David Brent and destroyed it with Life On the Road. If you don't know what I mean by 'revising his best years as solo efforts' look for his recent appearance at the Oxford Union. If you didn't know better you'd swear Steve Merchant didn't exist.

I remember watching the office when it first aired back in 2001, think it was a wednesday night on BBC2, and I wasn't sure what I was watchign at first but it made me howl. I then would check the reviews of it in the weekly TV guide and was surprised to see that the person writing the review hated it. Lesson here is never let someone tell you what to think of a piece of art (TV show, Movie, Album, actual Art), but especially never let a professional critic (Kermode for one) dictate what you think is excellent. The Office has and will stand the test of time, I'm also glad to say I've never watched the US office

Love this comment and your absolutely right. But please watch the US version. I was completely sceptical about it too but gave it a chance. Obviously it’s the same context but totally different. It literally is the US version. But from start to finish you can tell Gervais has played his part in it. It’s definitely worth the watch. UK version hands down but the US has done it justice 🎉

Yeah the david brent movie I watched it I got some laughs out of it but the film would have worked if he ignored the office style documentary stuff, dont make thos guy be david brent just create some wannabe pop star character and make a film about him and it would have worked just as fine. Falling back on the david brent character I don't know did ricky just think it would be more successful that way? If it was a film about some wannabe call him Johnny or something give it the same kinda plot and it would have been recieved a lot better cuz doing it with Brent just ruined the office . Brent himself got a really good ending in the office and then he became even more of a loser who just needs to be told by a guy who can't stand him "I like you" and the guy blows thousands of pounds on fake snow I think it was all because he feels bad for this loser. I've noticed some similar problems in Netflix's after life idk if you've seen it so I dont want to do spoilers but these problems Gervais has in wrapping things up probably wouldnt exist if he and Merchant still worked together

It's sad to acknowledge, because I love The Office, Extras, the XFM shows, the animated series & while not nearly as good, I liked moments in Life's Too Short and Derek...but Ricky misstepped seriously with Life on the Road. It's too much to say he ruined the legacy of Brent, but he definitely took the shine off. I sometimes wonder if Steve's role gave structure to the mad, child-like energy that Ricky has. It would be a lot easier to make a blanket statement about the nature of their collaboration if Steve hadn't been involved with Life's Too Short. Brent is done now, consigned to a nostalgic place in the public consciousness. I guess it's near impossible to keep a character fresh and as funny as it was on conception. The only character I can think of in the English speaking world that still bubbles with brilliance is Alan Partridge. Twenty five years and still pissfunny. Anyway...this little bleh was brought to you by me being in bed with a fever.

I walked on a narrow highway but I never missed starting last in the finished 60s. The guy I was talking about with the French bread in his trenchant pocket nervous love never enjoyed.

Credit to the writes choosing not to prolong & tweak a flawless creation and for not chasing some bogus accomplishment "longest running sitcom of all time" as did those fools behind the once brilliant Simpsons.

The shaky camera work dates it and makes it a much harder watch on big screens now as it gets damn annoying trying to follow and focus on what is going on, however the comedy and the realism of how offices were back then gives it a whole new appeal to see again in 2022. Unfortunately in this "woke" world (often pushed by the BBC!) means everyone takes offence now and I'm surprised they have not yet erased The Office and cancelled it, I'm sure it will in time.

The “woke” world is some fantasy land that you people have made up revolving around autistic girls on TikTok. The BBC doesn’t push anything like that because it doesn’t give them anything big in terms of commerce.
