I appreciate the fact that you understood that Malcolm was not advocating indiscriminate violence. This is a point of contention that a lot of people could not seem to understand in regards to him, or understood it and pretended not to. It's a big difference between walking up to a man and hitting him for no apparent reason. And defending yourself against that attack.

Thank you @Michael Wilks. Sound this for the whole world especially black people to hear. You said it all. Some of my family members, some of my family friends and I spent years studying both men’s approaches, especially that of Malcom, right from the late 80s in Africa.

Some of my African friends took the name Malcolm X because of his audacity and intelligence. He said it all without fear or fret, and never shied from correcting any of his wrong opinions or beliefs especially, after he toured the world. He understood pan-Africanism to the core which led him to attend OAU meetings in Africa and visiting African countries like Ghana, Morrocco,Lagos, Nigeria where he took the name, the people called him Omo Wale (Yoruba translation: the son has returned home). He was an enigmatic African warrior who had meetings with African leaders on the way forward for African nations’ independence then.

And realizing that our most basic common link is the pigmentation permeating and circumferencing both our skin. As well as our shared experience of oppression at the hands of the white man .Because as he said they don't brutalize and kill us because we're Catholic, or because we're Mulsim, or because we reside in different parts of the world( modification). They brutalize and kill us because we're black plain and simple. Whether some of us want to believe it or not, none of us are exempt from that sentence none of us. So his goal was to reunite us in this commonality. And to link the Africans and African Americans together in their long lost kinship. Because as the old saying goes united we stand divided we fall, peace brother.

While thats true in the sense of the end result in terms of achieving the goal Mlk had a reasonable approach while Malcolm x originally had an ideology that would have had a black vs white war in America that blacks would have lost But I most also add Malcolm x himself said after going to Mecca that he agreed with martins way of thinking and that he wished he had seen his vision earlier

@@andrethompson2034 Malcolm's ideology "by any means necessarry" still resonates till this day, and a lot of youth are inspired by Malcolm X compared to MLK, people of color and black people still discriminated today, police brutality still aimed toward black people in general. It hasnt really changed that much, look at George Floyd's protest for example. After his pilgrimage to Mecca Malcolm X was the only black leader who think on an international level..If only Malcolm lived 5 years more he'd no doubt would push USA to the United Nations and force them to pass the strongest civil rights bills that they have ever passed..because he had forged ties with many african and asian nations to support the african american struggles for "human rights" not "civil rights"....MLK who only think on a domestic level unfortunately only realized this after Malcolm's death and he got killed for it.

This is why he was ultimately assassinated. and there are facts you can check on that in his interviews from 1967 up until his assassination and in J. Edgar Hoovers recorded accounts of MLK particularly when he was being marked fir assassination for rejecting his "obedience to white liberal doctrine."

Malcolm's message was simply defend yourself if you are discriminated against and fight for your own independece...Americans fought for their own indepence, there's a phrase that says "liberty or death" what does that mean? The US dont want black people to be militant and think internationally.. Malcolm after he broke out with the NOI, he established his own organization, forged ties with african and asian nationalist leaders and became allies which then planned to push the US to the United Nations for crime against "human rights" he did this so that the US would be forced to pass the strongest civil rights bill that they have ever passed under the auspices of the UN... that's why he got killed for it, because he realized that the problem is not about civil rights but human rights...unfortunately MLK wasnt smart enough to realize this earlier

Most people in the comment section prefer Malcolm instead of MLK. That's a big change from the earlier generation where people looked at MLK, and Malcolm X was not known as he is now. @Thug Rose I agree with integration as well , but only if the law of the land is on your side. Non violent protest to integrate and getting brutalized by police didn't seem like good critical thinking skills to me. Why to patronize other people businesses whom rather discriminate against you? At the end of the day America need to admit what we had was not a civil rights problem, but a human rights problem. Still do. We still have mass poverty among African Americans, more money put towards a military industrial complex and prison then to social reform. America still owe reparations, and it should still be an ongoing conversation. Mlk wanted a check to put towards stimulate the economy , black business ownership, same for Malcolm but he wanted to take it a step further by requesting land.

I don't know how many of his books you've read, but in his autobiography and also "Where Do We Go From Here--Chaos Or Community?" he advocates black psychological upliftment. His 1965 speech in Philadelphia and his 1967 "Black and beautiful" speech elevates the black community, too.

Integration depends on too many precarious variables (expanding economy, cooperation and acceptance from the dominant group, adjustments in power relations, etc.) Marcus Garvey and Malcolm X's approach is much more sensible, reasonable, and intelligent. Mlk, like ghandi believed that there were situations where non violence was not an option and violent resistance was necessary. Peaceful resistance works only if it is backed up with the possibility of violence(if demands arent met).

I love Dr. King and Brother Malcolm. Why must our people pick sides when it comes to our leaders, our heroes, our champions? A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. We will be more powerful and more effective when we bring our ideas to the table, discuss our differences and come together on a common ground. How powerful would it have been for Malcolm X and Dr. King to lay aside their differences and join forces?! What we fail to realize is that both of these great men were EVOLVING. They were both growing and their ideas were changing. They were not the same men in their 20's as they were in their 30's. Prior to Dr. King's death he realized that if real change were to take place that it would have to be done economically. He founded the Poor Peoples Campaign. With the idea to fight against economic injustice, fight for fair housing and equal employment opportunities. Malcolm after his exile from the Nation of Islam went on his journey to Mecca. It was a life changing experience for him. He realized that people of all colors were Muslim and that it would take unity to bring about real change all over the world. He founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity. We do ourselves a great disservice of we don't honor and learn from both of these great leaders. While we look at numerous videos keep in mind that they were speaking in a moment in time and they were still growing. We must grow with their ideas and evolve just as they were evolving.

I believe that when it comes to defending freedom and justice, we can learn from both MLK and Malcolm X. Though there are certain aspects in which I prefer King’s philosophy over Malcolm’s, such as civil disobedience over reciprocity, as well as my disagreements with the Nation of Islam, I respect Malcolm’s desire to not back down and was willing to promote the taking up of arms for self defense purposes, and not with the aggressive intentions. Professor is correct in saying Malcolm was very similar to the founding fathers in that very sense. I’ve read more about him recently and I’ve grown to have newfound respect for what he brought to the table for civil rights

Not everything can be settled with peace. There was no protesting for peace to stop WW1, WW2, Vietnam etc. All of those wars had less of a valid reason than black people fighting to live. WW1 was started because one King was murdered. But people think Malcolm X was wrong for no longer turning the other cheek, after 400 years of injustice.

@@SuperMuneera well those conflicts are far less complex than the civil right movement and focused more on territorial supremacy and control of resources but also no one is justifying the blood shed in those conflicts either. The problem with Malcom X is he wasn't looking for peaceful solution he was looking to get even so to speak and had he not be assassinated by the church of Islam and his vision realized it would have lead to more racial strife and possibly apartheid depending how much of his vision cane to fruition. People forget that Malcom was a black supremist meaning he wanted to effectively flip the roles where whites and other minorities are treated as second class citizens and blacks become the ruling class.

@@nemisous83 I totally disagree, he was not a supremacist. It's an false equivalency many people use either by mistake or to rewrite history. Malcolm X didn't beg for freedom, he didn't send little children to march and get attacked by policemen and dogs like MLK did. Malcolm X had a vision where every man had the right to protect himself. Not beg for inclusion, respect or love. Like I said, the two major wars were fought for far less. If anything Malcolm X exemplifies being an American far more than MLK. Who had a more socialist approach than one of self defence.

@@SuperMuneera Malcom X absolutely was a supremist and frequently used terms like "white devil" and various other slurs for white people. saying Malcom X wasnt racist is almost as ridiculous as saying Andrew Jackson didn't hate the Native Americans. both where incredibly prejudice due to their harsh upbringing Malcom X had alot of forward thinking ideas for the black community however Malcom was always about retribution and getting even with the white man not breaking bread and putting aside the past for peace. Well everyone in the MLK rallies wanted to be there no one was forced, however the difference between MLK and Malcom X was MLK action acted on his vision where as Malcom X simply spouted rhetoric and criticized MLK for not being harsh enough on the white man. Malcom X was concerned about purging the black community of white influence which is why he encouraged his followers to accept Islam instead of the white man's religion (Christianity) this even extended to political and economic structure as well embracing Socialism/Communism. MLk was the exact opposite and embraced American traditions because he felt that the African American community was as much American as the white folk.

Why didn’t Britain and the US break bread with Nazi Germany? Fighting a war and dragging 90 percent of every nation on earth, by your logic makes them just as bad as the Nazi’s. As for MLK, the reason he was murdered was because he changed his philosophy. He realised integration meant black people would start from the very bottom. “I fear I am integrating my people into a hiring house” we’re his words not long before his death. And that’s exactly what integration meant. Black people had to give away their schools, businesses and start again. Black people per capita are poorer now than before integration. In Malcolm X’s vision it was complete separation by race. Because why force yourself to be with people who despise you. Black people would have had their own nation, own politics and would have generated wealth. And due to their standing globally would have outperformed their white counterparts. That’s why white people didn’t want to separate.

Why would the oppressors have someone arrested 29-30 times for saying what they want to hear? Why would they phone tap and put surveillance on him? Why would they threaten him and ultimately kill him? I encourage you to really look into King and have a deeper knowledge of what he did and said. He was a major threat to white supremacy.

@@simondilling5353 nope the real major threat to white supremacy was Malcolm X, he established worldwide alliance between nationalist leaders of Africa and Asia and had planned to push the US for charges on crimes against human rights...there was an evidence that King would support it... Malcolm X was being followed by many government agencies, NOI, KKK and the American Nazi, he was assassinated earlier because his militanct presence could end the systematic white power structure...

@@afud1015 Sure, but Martin was involved before Malcolm and he was considered a threat. Robert Kennedy had the FBI keep an eye on him. They did that for years and one fact is that in time leading up to the assassination in Memphis King was considered to be the greatest threat from the black community. In 1965 King also declared that the civil rights movement was ready for a new phase which was to fight for full human rights. I am not really interested in a fictional competition between King and X. I am simply stating the fact that King was not a beloved icon, but a man that, according to polls, the majority of white America was against.

@@simondilling5353 It shouldn't be a competition between both great men, King and X in 1964-1965 were extremely dangerous to the white power structure when they worked together...when Malcolm X decided to help Dr.King in the civil rights struggle he added the significant powe rthat Dr. King and his followers never had before which is black nationalism, while Dr. King was on the frontlines proposing legislations to be passed on, Malcolm X was the one who pointed the gun at the government to pass it quickly or else there'll be bloodshed and riot, there's also evidence that Malcolm X also threatened to attack Rockwell (American Nazi) if they decided to inflict harm toward Dr. King and his followers... The struggle of Dr. King would not succeed if it weren't the militancy and worldwide alliance that Malcolm X added which shortly after his death black people became more militant in the struggle for "human rights" including Dr. King himself. It is such a shame that Malcolm X died too soon. And today Dr. King is loved by the US government and he is in many school history books and curriculum While they keep Malcolm X out of history and school, but nonetheless Malcolm X was a global Icon for human rights.

Dr. King & Minister Shabazz were the greatest civil rights leaders we, the Black Community has ever had...although they didn’t always see eye to eye to solve the racial barriers between blacks and whites they still had a deep friendship. Both men were great and right in their respective methods. Ghandi of Indian secured independence from British without violence. US used extreme method to do same. Either method only needed to be acted upon with conviction and I think MLK did that. Non violence is not synonymous to being passive , the bus boycott, the match were active non violent methods.

Gandhi didn't do anything. The British only left because the Nazis had devastated their country during the war and you can't exactly rebuild your country while playing empire. Gandhi was a tool used by the British oppressors to convince the populace of South Asia to embrace the flawed philosophy of non-violence while the British openly continued to use violence. At best he was a useful idiot who was to caught in in bs spirituality and the notion of good vs evil, rather than seeing the world through a lense of reality. Or perhaps the truth was darker and he deliberately did the things he did to make it easier for the British to rule by side lining more direct and at times violent freedom philosophies. Gandhi did say that he believed that the White man was superior to the Indian. Maybe he suffered from stock holm syndrome and decided to aid his oppressors.

Malcolm never supported integration. What he came to appreciate after the Hajj was that, all White men were not evil after his pilgrimage. He admitted his earlier assertion of 'all White men were evil' as being wrong. In that same interview, he reaffirmed his continuous belief in non-integration.

Most people focus on the pre Hajj, pre suspension from the NOI Malcolm. That Malcolm would preference almost every interview he gave with a “The Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches...” So, it was actually another man’s message that made Malcolm look like an angry, incorrigible, reverse racist. Malcolm was way more intelligent, refined, and eloquent than to be put in a box as just some hot-headed firebrand. Not saying this video is communicating that directly, but that is, i’m sure, the takeaway for many. Because that’s just all some can or want to hear. At any rate, I concur with your astute assessment/comparison. I can only imagine if these minds (Malcolm X & MLK), ideas, and philosophies, had merged. I imagine the powers that be of the time realized this...
