This is such a common but incorrect theory. He’s not insane at all, like Simon/Ice king. he’s a conman who gets what he wants and then gets in trouble. Once he lost finn and Minerva, people he loved, he reverted back to who he truly was the whole time. He also refuses to deal with his trauma

@@CrystalRose1111 Yeah, I don't like that theory. He's been driven mad after losing the only thing he ever truly cared about, his son and wife, after almost dying to protect his son. Then continued on in his years never knowing if his son lived. It's 100% possible that a loving parent went insane after that situation.

He was always a free spirit I think we need a prequel because after that accident he just regressed into his old ways and he did say that he was never going to change and he was used to burning bridges and he didn’t want all that responsibility imo he cared about Finn in a small way but never long term he just wanted to enjoy the ride

i think it wasextremely unorthodox but excellently written. In most other shows they'd have him reconciliate with Finn but nor Finn nor Minerva and most likely not anyone else except maybe for the Comet and the higher beings knows the truth.

I mean... it's kinda the point. An existence without love, without responsability, without... pain. without loss. It was just what Martin wanted. Finn was hurt in many ways, but he wanted to pull through, because the pain was worth it for what he made others feel, and how he felt himself, which is what he shows to Minerva when he meets her. Martin, though? He was far too dettached from everything, and if he had to stop caring about *anything* forever, well, that was the better choice; "You burn enough bridges, the only way left is forward".

He's wanted by the god auditor for desertion in Fionna and Cake. Perhaps he abandoned the deal that the purple catalyst comet gave him and ran off to do more scoundrel stuff on that new plane of existence.

Didnt matter if he was being chased by enemies. Alot was lost afterwards.

To disprove your theory, he literally went out of his way to fight the robot for Finn. Why would he do that if it was all a ploy?

He lost himself after he lost his son. Whether he remembered or not, there was nothing left for him and no way back.

You can search the original title card for Min and Martin episode. You can see that he bang his head because blood is dropping out of it. So he definitely suffer of some head trauma

My guess would be 26 years old in islands and 44 years old when Finn meets him at the prison

He's a con artist through and through, the one time he tried to settle down, his past kept up with him, so now he keeps digging himself into bigger and bigger holes. With the new Fionna & Cake episodes we can tell that if he actually tried kindness again he'd get himself killed, he's a victim of circumstance and he lies and cheats his way to avoid his past(which include Minerva and Finn) He the only time he wasn't lying ended up with him battered and bleeding at sea

@@sealbeegle9785 he DID become a good father, problem is whether it be looking for a way to get Finn back or just brain damage, he went back to conning people. He pretty much fully detached himself from other people including Finn(since he kinda represents everything truthful about Martin) and actively represses the past (talking about Minerva stresses him out) It's hard for him to go back to that short period of time where he was true to himself, the only way he's survived this long is by lying to others. And in "The Star"'s world Martin didn't have anyone to con so he didn't need to develop his con artistry. (Which unfortunately killed him due to his self-sacrifice, the antithesis of Ooo Martin's self-preservation) He's deep down a morally good guy that's buried by his mountain of lies.
