He grows up in Finnmark that is ravaged by the last years of war, and has been an outsider since.
Yet, Martin Schanche is the man who turns rallycross into Norway's new national sport.
He never backs down, never lets anyone pass him,
never accepts injustice, and never accepts being called a coward.
And still, he manages to carve his way into the hearts of the entire Norwegian people.

Martin had a reputation in Australia. At least for me. In the mid eighties, snippets of him competing were shown on our sports programs on the weekend. This was my teenage years. I had a junior racing licence that let me drive my Father’s rally car in short circuit sprint competitions on the dirt. Martin was one of my heroes back then… The goal was to perfect the “Scandinavian Flick” as you entered the corner and then exit on full power. Martin was inspiring both as a great engineer and a great driver. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p91ndq-Qv6-0m4U.htmlsi=I6P9IbjtKr1XJzzB

Mr Rallycross is the best there has ever been. He never gave anything less than 100% for risk and reward, a little bit just like Colin MacRae. I started watching Rallycross on Eurosport in the 80's and it was magic. Best races were with Martin in the RS200 and Will Gollop in the 6R4. This was a fabulous find and so glad to have sat and watched it.

When I was a kid my dad would take me to watch the rally cross at Brands Hatch. Martin and Will Gollop had evil battles. This would have been about 1990. I knew nothing of who Martin was but the way he drove said it all. He was absolutely fierce, his determination to win was incredible. What a hero.

There was always a special vibe in the crowd when Schanche came to the start. If you got in his way you better hid, as he would always come back for revenge. Even for rallycross standards he broke a lot of rules. I cannot think of a race car driver who brought more action than he did.

I was stationed in Greece with the U.S. Army in the late 80's, my passion for Rallying was just starting to take shape. I had bought my first T.V. and could get a very fuzzy signal from Eurosport which I used to quench my thirst for all things Rally. Then I saw this Rallycross program one day and was amazed (and horrified) to see retired Group B cars being thrashed and mangled, the two names the announcer kept shouting was Schanche and Alamaki.

At the end of his RWD era he made over 500 horsepowers to the wheels. When the 4WD guys became too fast, he then built an Escort MK3 and converted it to 4WD, well over 500 horses as well. Group B was a manufacturers race, but this was privateers and their own solutions. It was madness, just at a safer place (at the track).

I grew up in the 90's, and being local to Lyngås meant watching the races there almost every year. I have fond memories from the track, and of course watching Mr. Rallycross himself race there. Some of the best memories from there is when I saw the races live during the day, and then watching the recaps on TV in the evening. I remember we collected bottles when we were there and got "ritch" from recyceling them afterwards. I also remember the race when Ludvig Hundsbet got his bonnet blown up on his windshield and Martin overtook him and won. It was a really cool race. The chicane where Hundsbet got his bonnet on the windshield were named "Hundsbet Dumpa". I also remember when I took my driving license we had to have a night driving course, and the driving school I used had that course on Lyngås. So driving my own 1987 Ford Escort there, where Martin had raced his Escorts in the past were really cool. It is sad though, that no one will get memories like that at Lyngås anymore, today there isn't much left of the track. Today the gate you had to drive through to get to the start grid is replaced with a new gate and a weight for cars. Lyngås have become a recyceling center. So all the memories you get there now is when you throw away your broken stuff, instead of breath taking racing.

@HGSolberg 9 ай бұрын
I remember that, and I remember I was disappointed when he drove off. And I also remember his rater silly explanation for it; He said had to find out what the limits of the car was. But that type of racing wasn't his cup of tea. You can't take any overconfident chances with a Le Mans racer and save it. Taking chances is partly what made him a great rally cross driver. In addition to just being a great driver, of course.
