You cannot be spontaneously funnier than that. Seriously. Robin Williams was a great improviser, Russell Brand, Craig Fergusson and Graham Norton are great too in coming up with shit on the spot, but Martin is the nº 1, because he comes up with the funniest shit and delivers it as if it was rehearsed.

im so glad i saw this comment because i am totally going to use it in a book i am writing a book on how the anonymity if social media attracts anti-social people. the premise is that the anonymity of social media allows anti-social people to engage in misanthropic behaviors without the consequences of behaving like that in person. misanthropic people hate naturally charming and engaging people like martin short and try to explain away their social skills by attributing it so some dysfunction like drug use. Frank Grossi just because you cant be as witty, charming and interesting as Martin Short without the aid of drugs does not mean Martin Short cant. Martin Short has been consistently hilarious, dynamic and engaging and delighting audiences of millions for more than 3 decades even AFTER the tragic death of his wife. that is nothing short of legendary. what have YOU done?

Frankly, I think commenters here are a little confused about what makes Marty so affable and funny. He's not, especially, a "great improviser," as some would state (although he is not without considerable ability in that regard), and he is not a host persona as opposed to a guest. A lot of what he says and does is obviously rehearsed and repeated often. The key is that he makes it seem like it's not. Plus, it's so damned endearing that you not only "don't mind" his repeated schtick, you love it. Why? Partly because the man has more charm than almost anyone you can think of. Witness his talk show guest performance entrances. Almost always the same. And yet, it's almost always charming, unlike most other comedians. Contrast him with the other great comedian (and better actor) Billy Crystal. Crystal is a major intellect, an actor and a superior improvisor. Do I LIKE Billy better than Marty? No, not really. I love them both, almost equally. You know, like you do your kids.
