Big News… Martin is releasing a new body shape - The "Super D" - looks like a standard dreadnought, only bigger! Warning; this may be the biggest, beefiest, cannon of a guitar that we've ever heard on this channel!! Just listen to it next to the standard D-28 (7:28). There are two models in the Super D shape… one with Guatemalan Rosewood and one with Koa. Which sounds best to your ears? What do you think of this new body shape? Leave a comment.

Before Paul gets flamed, he is correct that the 3-piece back does not change the tone. That’s a persistent rumor from when the d-35 came out, with 1/4” bracing instead of the d-28’s 5/16”. That changed the tone for sure. But people couldn’t see it; they could see the three piece back, so it was false attribution. I know the back bracing is apparently shorter on a 3-piece back, but it should be really negligible.

Hand it to Martin to develop a guitar that NO WOMEN will likely ever want to play or purchase for themselves . . . This new Martin guitar is precisely why Taylor Guitars has done so well overall. Taylor's most popular model remains their Grand Auditorium (comparable to a Martin OOOO in size.) Why? Well, the one very, uh, "big" reason is: they are much more comfortable to play than dreads and kick out more sound than the smaller, folk-sized offerings by Martin and Gibson. The Taylor Grand Auditorium is sonically much more focused than the airy and bass-heavy dreadnought and, most importantly- women can get their arms around the thing. I'll wager that this new Martin will end up a "niche" guitar at best- much like their baritone from a few years back which you never seen anybody playing and even fewer folks talking about . . . (For the record- I own a '97 Martin Special Edition triple-oh and a '93 Taylor 612c- so I am partial to that tight, focused sound. The Martin triple-oh is their finest model IMHO. Had a '73 D-28 once. Nice guitar- but it just ain't a triple-oh . . . )

It reminds me of the dreadnoughts made by Bozo Pudanavac, who made the best 12-strings ever made. His dread shape was the upper bout of a Martin dread with the lower bout of a Gibson J-200, his guitars were just enormous and his 12-strings sound like a church organ in the room.

I was a Dreadnaught guy until I tried a Guild F-50R. Then a Rainsong JM1000. Bought them both. They make dreads sound like pre-pubescent males. Never tried a Gibson J-200, but I've heard plenty. They're a little more muted. The Rainsong JM3000 12 is so clear, loud and articulated they're frightening. Saving up to buy one.

Interesting development for Martin. Against the grain possibly, so to speak. I sell guitars at the largest music store in my state. Currently we are well-stocked with Martin dreads and yet they aren't moving as well as in the past. Taking inflation out of the equation, our customers are seeming to prefer smaller bodies. OMs are desired and OOOs and OOs right behind.
