I was never a Nikon guy. My perception of them was always that they were big, clunky, expensive and used by old guys stuck in their ways, but I'm now about to pull the trigger on a D800E after using a friend's with the 180mm f2.8 lens - wow, just wow! Also, I was always a "one system" guy but after following your channel for a while and learning about older cameras I've felt encouraged to try other cameras for different looks. Picked up a 5D Mark II a year ago and loving it. Still bring out my Fuji X-T4 now and then but I'm kinda bored of the APS-C look after playing with older Full Frame DSLR's. I recently added a DSRL kit to my kit. I went with Canon over Nikon, mainly for these reasons: I wanted a weather sealed, auto-focus SLR for shooting 135 format film that can take image stabilized lenses I can share with the same mount on a DSLR. I wanted the best possible tilt-shift lenses I can find on the used market. So Canon is the best option for me, I went with a Canon EOS 1n, EOS 1v, 5DsR, 5DII and 6D. I added the 24mm version 2 tilt-shift, the 90mm tilt-shift, plus all the staples (24-70 2.8 II, 16-35 f4 II, the 35mm f2 IS USM, the 50mm f1.2 L, the 40mm pancake).

As a hobbyist the gear is part of the hobby also. I recently bought a 5Dc and am using it next to my D610 and S5 Pro. Fun thing is that I can use Nikon glass on the Canon. And I’ve adapted my vintage Pentax lenses from film to digitale finally. They all have their place in my cabinet. A big disadvantage is that, because these are ‘extra’ cameras as vintage digitale, I don’t grow into them like second nature, like I did with Nikons.

Always great content Martin! I'd been using a Canon 1Dmkiii since 2009 and had built up a few lenses notably the 17-40 f4 and the 70-200 f4is, both worked well on the APSH sensor. Sadly the old 1D died last year after a drop resulting in a failed shutter and the cost of repair wasnt worth it, so I picked up a 5D classic to keep using the lenses. Coming from a 1D body the 5D autofocus was frustratingly unreliable, so the 5D took on more tripod work and a little later I picked up a Nikon D700 mainly to test older AI lenses I'd started repairing and rebuilding for my film work. Honestly, i was stunned at the performance from the D700, I'd stupidly dismissed Nikon DSLR's as un-refined bricks (my friends were shooting Nikon in the past and I'd played with them a little). It didnt take me long to grab a couple of AFD and G lenses (50mmf1.8 / 85f1.8D), then later a slightly smaller D600 for travel after one of your earlier video recommendations. The 5D classic with good lenses is a lovely camera when you work within its limitations, but these older Nikons are well worth the investment - and I can still use my old manual lenses with accurate focus confirmation when i want a break from film. I'll continue to use both brands side by side, they both have their strengths which you have covered perfectly in this video. Cheers.

Hey Martin, what a great collection of videos, I'm really enjoying your content. I started in 1995, with film. My dad worked as a photographer at some point and he used Nikon, so I went that way, starting with a basic camera and soon gaining momentum as a paid photographer, in 1998 I upgraded to the mighty Nikon F5(which I still have!). Fast forward to 2007 and Nikon went to press to confirm that they would not release a full frame camera(Canon already had the 5D Mark 1) and I could not see the point in staying with a system that, I felt, was 'holding me back'. So I switched to Canon, sold most of my Nikon gear(except the F5) and got on with it. For 15 years I stuck with Canon(no one can say I didn't give it a fair go can they?), and very happily indeed. But in February 2022 I saw for the first time the Nikon Z9. Believe it or not, up until then, I was completely and utterly oblivious of whatever Nikon was doing(or Canon for that matter). I was a happy go lucky photographer, enjoying my gear and shooting away. I had no idea what was going on with mirrorless, focusing systems and eye detection. The Z9, for some reason, 'spoke' to me the same way the F5 did all those years ago. I saw the F5's DNA in it, but a million times better(to my eyes anyway). So with no hesitation, I switched back. I am loving my Z9! I only got prime lenses, all of them! From 20 to 85mm, all F1.8 and the 105 macro F2.8. Incredible image quality these new Z lenses! As you know, I still have the Canon 5D Mark 1, now as an Infrared camera with a 'nifty-fifty'. So all in all it's been a great success story for me so far. Loved the video, Cheers, Ray.

Good information, and you accurately described both sides of each argument. For me I'm fully invested in Canon EF. I picked them for the color science and lens options. For me, Canon's color science, can't be beat. I also agree that lenses shouldn't only be considered by their sharpness, unless you only shoot test charts! The human face does not like to be photographed with extreme detail.

You're right Martin and that's why I have both the Nikon D780 and a Canon 5D MK IV cameras. I love the dynamic range, low light rendering, autofocus system and color rendition of the Nikon D780 DSLR. As far as the Canon 5D MK IV DSLR I love the skin tones for portraits, gorgeous color palette and cinematic rendering with Canon lenses. There are so many great Canon EF lenses with character and cinematic rendering. I found I couldn't choose one over the other because they compliment each other so well. I love and use both systems. The Canon and Nikon flash systems are quite good as well for wedding and event photographers.

Fantastic Martin. Information born out of experience that just isn't shared elsewhere. I'm invested in Canon, mainly dslrs with ef glass, which has become so reasonably priced. I have the R6 with adapter too. The fast ef lenses work so well on the r6. The cinematic rendering of the Nikon is very tempting though, with the 1.8 primes. I'm doing mostly street and increasingly portraits.

Thanks! I have watched your video a pair of times. As a hobbyist I think i will go with Nikon and Canon DSLR. It could be better than going for a mirrorless. I have tried different systems and i don't decide yet, but DSLR from Canon and Nikon seems the best option in a budget - They are cheap in the used market and have a lot of used lenses. Cheaper than most mirrorless and with more lenses than most mirrorless systems - The lenses can be adapted to mirrorless with AF, electronic control and exif data, so lenses will work for me if i go for mirrorless in the future and get adapters - Now in 2023 I know pro photographers that still use DSLRs, so i think DSLRs still can produce good photography

I just take pictures for fun but I really enjoy all of your videos. I have my Canon 5D MK11 with a 50mm 1.8 stm, 70-200mm f4 L is and my favorite 135mm f2 L which I just had to have. Now I've just purchased a Canon 5D Classic in mint condition for £150 so with my 50mm f1.8 on that I just carry it around with me and for some reason it just feels very special and more enjoyable to use. I can't believe I'm taking pictures of such quality with a camera and lens costing £250

Love my Pentax DSLRs !! My old " Pentax K10 . " still with the CCD Sensor ! And my newer , " Pentax K 3 miii . " Mirrorless , I prefer " Olympus or Lumix MFTs .

Throughout my life, I have enjoyed photography as a spectator, looking at glossy photos in magazines such as National Geographic. It wasn't until later in life - I'm now in my early sixties - that I actually decided to do something about it. I had not the slightest clue about photography or cameras, so I asked an acquaintance who taught film photography at a local college what camera I should buy. He told me, "Get a Canon T5i, or a T6i if you can afford it." I stumped up for the T6i and have never looked back: a great camera to get started with, capable of producing superb images. I'm sure Nikon and Sony's cameras are superior in some ways (but inferior in others), but Canon was the system I bought into, and I can't say I have any complaints.

As a beginner in 2018 this was such a hard and confusing choice. Ended up going Canon as I heard better things about the EF lenses at the time, and was told to ultimately look at the glass I wanted more than the camera body. No regrets so far. Recently grabbed a 6D mark I to hopefully start working towards some professional gigs and also improve my astro photography. Pretty happy with Canon until I have a lot more money to play around with different brands, and I guess ultimately it's all about being content with the limitations of what you have, and working hard learning to wring everything out of a camera that is possible

New subscriber and on a bit of a marathon of your videos! I recently sold all my Sony gear (a6400 and A73) and lenses, I rarely even shoot video! I felt like I was just watching reviews and collecting stuff rather than using the equipment for its purpose. I just want to get back to basics and am thinking of either the d700 or the 5d classic I mostly shoot portraits of the kids and some landscape, I had a Nikon d90 years ago and am familiar with Nikon so might give the Canon system a go and see what I think about these “canon colours” ! Bought my first Nikon in 1971 and stayed with them through my news career with the last film camera being the F4s. Since then I have not really been serious, but now an opportunity has come to shoot fashion for a new designer and I will stay with Nikon because of the autofocus and affordable lens choices. The green colour tint is easily fixed with a change to the default white balance to warm them up a little. Everything else about Nikon pro bodies says longer lasting and the heavier bodies are easier to get good results from hand held.

I had mostly Canon cameras in the past until I got swept into the CCD sensor versus the CMOS sensor argument. Convinced on CCD I got the last of those, a Nikon D3000 and soon got frustrated with so many settings only accessible through a menu. Since I already built a collection of Nikon lenses, I stuck with the brand and updated to the D7000. a pleasure to use. I did swap most of my modern AFS DX lenses to the older AFD type. These, like the 80-200 f2.8 and the 105 f2.8 macro deliver pin sharp results at any f stop, even wide open. They have a better "quality" feel to the more modern AFS lenses that feel somewhat cheap and plasticky.

I used to think that I had to use Canon a few years ago when I was an entry level hobby photographer. I had a Nikon and everyone told me to buy a Canon. I just ate it up switched to Canon, used that for years for wedding and event photography and some months ago went back to Nikon. I shoot portraits and street scenery almost entirely and have found that I just get along with Nikon better. Since I also shoot almost exclusively on natural light the dynamic range makes a big difference to mw and allows for easy detail recovery during processing.

Good video. I shoot primarily Nikon because my work (architectural and product photography) often requires very low light and shadow recovery. In dark settings I find the Nikon files much easier to work with in these situations. When I’m playing around during the day with photographing people, I have found that I prefer the canon files and color profile over Nikon just slightly. Both are great systems (particularly Nikons Z series sensors and glass) but I can appreciate the value of both systems for different speciality use cases

Having a 5Dii, a RP and a collection of EF glass I'm invested in Canon. Not sure which is better, Canon or Nikon. Still, adding a Nikon is tempting. If money were no object I would have both. You make a lot of videos about different camerabodies in a way that I like very much. About the character it gives your photos and not so much about megapixels and stuff. In this video you speak a bit about lenses. I would be interested in videos about specific lenses from you. For instance, I think my favourite lens that I own is a Helios 44-2. Technically not the best, but still. Anyways, love your vids and keep up the good work!

Man are you on point!! But tell you what the mirrorless revolution has done for my gear bag...I'm going for both schools!! Older DSLR's mind you but for all the reasons you have outlined both Nikon & Canon systems!! Just cant' wait to get my hands on a -$500 D500!!!

I have always been a Nikon user simply because they fit my big hands better and nikon is tough. i had the misfortune to fall 20 feet onto a grass ledge, broke 3 ribs in 4 places. my f3 warped its lens mount my original f, my favorite camera ever passed inspection by a camera technician as undamaged, my 35-200 zoom got new zoom cams my 25-50 also was undamaged. the ergonomics make nikon more enjoyable to use and I think that is what should guide you. which one do you enjoy using the most. every time i pick up my d700 i fall in love again and that improves the emotional content of my shots and mr castains is quite to blame for that excellent choice

I have shot with Canon systems for many years starting with Canon AE-1 and FD lenses. Continues with Canon when the EOS system and EF lenses. Lastly I kept the last film camera I purchased the Canon EOS 1N-HS. Digital EOS cameras like the 5D mk1, 40D and the 7d mk2 are part of my kit. I have used and purchased a few Nikon cameras and lenses F100 and D200 both were used frequently but sold the F100. The D200 uses a different sensor CCD not the CMOS sensor used today. Hard to choose between the two systems today both have advantages and disadvantages. I am not a professional just an advanced amateur photographer shooting the occasional event and some portrait work for friends. Money has not crossed my hands for those who have asked me to shoot something for them.

I've been a Nikon user with various older bodies and lens setups. Most of my photography is walk around photography of birds and wildlife. My favorite setup is a D500 with the full frame AF-P 70-300. It gives me reach and also the ability to close up. The quick autofocus is perfect for my purposes. I like your videos, thanks for your opinions.

The high ISO noise even on my Nikon D3500 is really nice and almost film like in quality. Especially in good light say for bird photography where I'll set auto ISO up to max 3200 to bump up the shutter speed.

Great video! I am an amateur photographer, started with film cameras.After watching your videos and with the encouragement of a friend, I bought a Canon 5d mk I and a 50mm lens in rock bottom price. Even though I bought a 20-35 L lens, I still prefer using the cheap 50mm lens. I use the Canon 5d for all type of photography. You are giving headache with this video about Nikon. But I will stick to my camera, after all it's to close to film like! Continue the great videos!

Without much research, I found myself using a Nikon d50 as my first ‘proper’ camera back in the mid 2000s. I loved the output when I got it right, but always admired the CAnon portraits. I never really understood why for all these years until this video! As an aside, I got more interested in bird photography which is a bottomless race for the latest and lightest tech - a very expensive past time! I’ve ditched mirrorless for an old Nikon d4 because , as you’ve mentioned in other videos, I just want to focus on the basics. A lot of the mirrorless stuff is taking some of the enjoyment out of photography for me, although the manual lens focus assist with the zf is very tempting, especially as my eyesight starts to deteriorate.

Interesting you put in the 40mm stm, I think that is great lens. I now only wish I got the black one, the white is not as stealthy as that lens should be.

I’m currently looking at a used Nikon d4 and canon 5d (2-4). I am focusing on people, some studio, some outside, editorial style shots and the occasional product photoshoot. I’m torn between the two systems. I currently shoot a Fuji xt3 which I love, but it doesn’t fit my hand well!! I’m open to thoughts?

Great video! I use both systems, I have bot the 1dx and the D4s, the 7d mkII and the d7200. My toughts are that if you intend to shoot mainly jpg and you are not interested in post processing then get a Canon body. In my opinion far better look of the jpg`s than Nikon. However, if you shoot RAW, there are only one choice as I see it, the difference in dynamic range between my 1dx mk1 and the D4s is huge in advantage of the D4s. You rarely have to bother about getting the exposure right with the Nikon, you can always fix in post. It is nearly impossible to blow the highlights on the D4s. Another thing is the autofocus, it has been a saying for many years that Canon has a superior autofocusing system with their Dual Pixel AF, sure it is good but I prefer Nikons Multicam system. The D4s absolutely murders the 1dx for auofocusing in low light, and the 1dx is not bad. The same goes to say with the crop bodies, I feel that my 7d mkII acually have a better autofocus than the 1dx. For the lenses I think Canon has the better of Nikon with long telephoto lenses such as the 500 f/4, 600 f/4 and 800 f/5,6 they are just a bit sharper I think. For the older lenses I prefer Nikon that has some really fantastic lenses, the 300 AF-S f/4 ED-IF, the 180 f/2,8,the 105 f/2,8 D are just gold. You also have the option on the F-mount to fit all the older AI and Ais lenses. In short, if you don`t like spending time behind the computer and shoot mainy jpg´s get a Canon system, if you shoot a lot in low light, bad conditions and like to post process, get a Nikon system.

I have a Fuji xe2s & xe1 & want to go full frame for enlargement of seascapes which do you suggest thank you

After more than a decade on Lumix MFT, I got the mirrorless S5II (haven't done DSLR since the Pentax K110D). I love that camera but I was getting into more and more situations where I needed another body. I also wanted to try a super zoom for single camera and lens work. That range doesn't really exist on L-mount. So I saw it as the perfect chance to try a new system and I had never tried and went Nikon. Like Pete, I thought it was for snobs. I settled on the 810 after a lot of debate and then WOW, so many choices for used gear. I love the 70-200 F4 on my S5II and just being an advanced mirrorless thought specializing long there made the most sense. So I decided to make the 810 my wide camera. I snagged the 28-300 which is insanely versatile and has no right to produce the images it does it seems. Then I found a bargain 24-120 F4 to compare it with. I debated wide forever before settling on the 17-35/2.8 D. I'm really enjoying it and learning the differences. When I stumbled on the 135/F2, yeah, that was too unique to pass up and there are many Z owners giving up these gems. Really enjoying exploring an older camera and a plethora of options in used gear to choose from.

I can only compare the Nikon Z versus the Canon R- system. I had both, and at the end I sold all my Nikon gear. Because I like more the colors of the Canon, and their lens lineup is much more useful for my needs. Concerning dynamic range my Canon R 6 Mk II is on the same level as the Nikon Z6 II for example.

I set my Nikon color to look slightly reddish like Kodakchrome over the Agfa greenish cast.

like you I have meat slab hands, by convention a hand is a measurement in the horse world and is 3 inchesmy hands are l 3"r4" and somehow nikon just seemed to fit my hands better also as a clumsy teenager, dropping my nikkormat destroyed lenses sometimes. I stopped using that nikkormat in my late 50's when i lost the use of one hand somehow Nikon menu systems made more sense to me now I have so much invested in the nikon system that changing would be a nightmare my coicees are d7200 d700 80-200 2,8d 75 1,4d 50 1,4d I like the rendition of d lenses to me the modern g lenses remind me of an improved camera phone flat and lifeless. thank you for emphasising the art over technique. most of us need this.

Thanks very much for the video- couldn't find anything like it before :) Also to note is that on the wide-end Nikon has 18-35G, it lighter, cheaper and just a tiny bit sharper than 16-35. Still though it's very plastic. I hear from different sources that Nikon has the best wide-angle lenses from all brands, even better than Zeiss. Maybe it's true. About bodies Canon has all the buttons on the right side, allowing you to operate, without taking your hand away from the lens. Also some of their bodies had a great technology allowing you to shoot through live view like you are using mirrorless.(if not mistaken dual pixel something). And on Z bodies I hear that from all the sterile looks coming out of mirrorless, Nikon actually managed to preserve the sharpness, helping you to kind of isolate you subject in focus form the background, while not being over sharpened or sterile.

I think your comments on the comparison of these three cameras are far more relevant than the more famous guys in PataPixel who had the same comparison a little while ago, thumbs up.

I had a Nikon d750 that i shot many live shows on, that thing was an absoloute monster, I honestly couldn't fault that camera.

Thanks for the objectivity. I don't know what to do. I want to do photography again. But ... and it's a big But ... my love of photography is in chromes to wet prints, and Nikon FEs. Many of today's features were never imagined back when I last bought cameras and lenses. One thing I have that remains useful - the Gitzo Series 2 tripod and off-center ball head. So many choices. Ektachrome is still here. Fond memories of ISO 64 with a 35 f/2 and 85 f/2 Auto-Nikkor AIS optics. I wonder if the Nikon Base ISO of 64 matters with an f/2 or f/1.4 lens. Again, thank you.

I am firmly in the Canon camp but most photographers I know are Nikon. I have never shot a Nikon digital camera but gradually over time have learned what the various DSLR models are. Nikon lenses, however, have been a confusing mess. This is a huge help understanding the lens lineup. It is also a very helpful in understanding the comparative strengths and weaknesses of Canon and Nikon. I bought a Ricoh GR2 a few years ago, which had the same sensor as the Nikon 7200 line. It was an eye opener for a Canon crop sensor user. Low ISO dynamic range was excellent.

Am an long time Nikon shooter - mainly wildlife in the past, but decided to start learning portrait photography this year. Have owned and still own quite a lot of Nikkor glass, especially the old manual focus lenses (like the 105mm f/2. 5). Beautiful optics. Best mf lens is the Voigtlander 58mm fmount. Put it on the D700, shoot in monochrome and you will be amazed. Bought a Canon 5d mk2 after seeing some of your vids (and started your editing course btw) with a 50mm f/1.8 and an adapter to shoot my nikon glass. It's not possible the othe way around but I am a fan after I learned the focusing screen could be replaced - got the s-screen and allI do is manual focus and loving the colours. Hi @Martin. This is a welcoming video. I own both the 5D and the D700, great cameras. Your explanation about how whites behave on the 5D was fully appreciated. However, I am more invested in Nikon gear, and find hard to justify expanding my lens collection to include lenses for my Canon 5D, besides the nifty fifty (bought it just as an experiment), and I was hoping if there is a way to imitate Canon 5D skin tones on my D700 so as to expand my Nikon lenses to include the 85mm 1.8g. Martin, in your experience, is this possible?

If you’re doing paid work it is really challenging to decide. I have done some accidental commercial work and even got paid once but they took it regardless of the color. I have and use both systems. They for sure have their strengths and weaknesses. Dealing with small fiddly cameras led me to the DSLR. They are big and sometimes heavy but like a pickup truck you can do more with them and you don’t have to be a contortionist to reach the controls. It would be interesting to see a comparison between APS-C vs Full Frame.

The person who brought me to photography was a Canon shooter at the time so I ended leaning to Canon. After a couple of years he moved to Nikon but I kept with Canon and today, for stills, I"m a Canon user but for video I use Sony and an iPhone. Early this year I sold my 750D with all EF-S lens I had, got to myself a 5Ds, a 50mm f/1.4. and a 17-35mm f/2.8. Just yesterday I got a 24-70mm f/4 and now I'm searching a 70-200mm f/4 IS and I also want to change the 17-35mm f/2.8 for an newer 16-35mm f/4 IS cause I didn't like the 17-35mm. I'm a beginner and I find that to learn photography with a high megapixel sensor as the 5Ds it is not exactly worthy to go all in with the faster lens as the gap between my skills/knowledge vs the difficulty to get sharp pictures with 51megapixels is quite huge. For video I'm using the tiny Sony ZV-1, that for me is way better than my 5Ds video result, and my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I'm trying to get into street photography and I'm searching for a Canon M6 MKII cause of the small camera body and the big megapixel sensor. I don't intend to move from Canon but anyways your video just made me more confident about he idea to stick with f/4 lens. Thank you for the video

Started out on Pentax... I wish they made a successor to the K-1 (II)... Moved to Nikon with AF-D lenses. Thinking of moving to Canon because I like their colours better (used a 400D and a 5DIV a few times) although I agree the grain and filmic look on the Nikon is nice)... And the canon AF is just faster.... If AF-S lenses don't solve it enough for me, I'm off. You can fix anything in post... But not focus issues. I'm faster with manual focus than the damn AF!

I have flirted a couple of times with Nikon FF DSLRs, but never really felt at home with the ergonomics or user interface. Which was a shame because I really liked the image quality from them. That and the fact that I own a fair number of AI and AIS lenses from the film era (which still get a trip out occasionally) and their cameras were backwards compatible. Speaking of backwards compatibility, this is the reason I am a very happy owner of a Pentax K1ii, which although it has pretty naff AF performance compared to modern mirrorless designs and indeed both Canon and Nikon DSLRs, it enables me to use beautiful K mount manual lenses which produce gorgeous colours and whose tactile feel just add to the enjoyment of the process of image taking. This camera also has wonderful ergonomics (even if it is on the bulky side), a great user interface and is beautifully engineered. However, I am tempted to try out a Canon 6D with a 40 or 50mm because:- 1. the price of them these days seems like a right steal 2. Images from them seem really nice looking (in a different way to both Pentax and Nikon) 3. It looks like a reasonably compact kit to carry around all day, but still provides a FF look.

Thank you so much for making this video. I always felt Nikon has been behind the curve, they lost alot of market share when Canon came out with the EOS automatic focusing system. When they started to make AF, they had a clumsy start. Nikon eventually makes some great cameras, like the D850, D600, D500. But they also made some real dogs like all the missteps with the D750. Mirrorless the same way, the original Z6 and Z7 were not well recieved. I always felt more comfortable with buying a Canon, may not be state of the art, but they are usually well thought out. Canon is like the Toyota of camera companies, reliable, not always the latest technology. For a Professional, I get that Nikon is better for alot of things, but Canon is all I need as an amateur.

Just sold my Canon RP and got back to... Canon 77D. With Canon ef lenses + TAMRON SP 90mm F/2.8 MACRO VC + Lensbaby Velvet 56 I am more that satisfied as a photographer: portraits, newborns, art close-up flowers.

I switched from Minolta Maxxum 35mm film SLR equipment to Nikon DSLR equipment in 2004. I always believed Nikon to have the best 35mm film SLR gear back then (1990s between Canon, Minolta, and Nikon) and presumed the same would be true in the DSLR world. Historically, I've preferred Nikon DSLR gear for stills photography, especially portraits and landscapes, while Canon DSLRs were better for video. Now that the world has moved on to digital mirrorless, this old relic of modest financial means will just have to make do with the Nikon DSLR gear I haven't yet sold off. Good things! 👍

I don’t know enough about Nikon although I now have a D800 with a AF P 70-300mm lens .. looks good so far and the dynamic range is as you have said.. but with canon ef lenses you can adapt them for mirrorless as well as use them for dslr .. like I say Nikon might be the same?.. As per usual right on the money..!! Brilliant..

I’m a Nikon user because that’s what my dad had. I’ve been using my camera for almost a year now. And i have no problems with it (except maybe the latest technology that cameras have nowadays). One of the pros of Nikon in my opinion is cheap bodies and cameras. They are affordable yet amazing. This is something that canon doesn’t have, at least in my experience. I borrowed my classmate’s canon camera and it really feels cheap. the kit lens is also not the best especially when compared to Nikon’s kit lens. If I wanted a camera that is affordable and produces professional looking photos, then that will be Nikon.

Hi! I’m looking to buy a camera. I’ve used mostly canon in the past but I was looking to buy a camera from a family friend who was changing me $1000 for is Nikon D850 body. Because of that I deep dived into research and based on my budget for both the camera and lens I found the Nikon D3S DSLR with a 85mm lens. Idk if that’s a good fit for me tho. I want to use this for architecture and dog portrait. And time to time use it for human pictures and landscape. Based on these comments and your video I’m leaning more to getting the Nikon

I wonder if a zoom for landscapes is really necessary, I say because they are usually heavy, light, bright, and with greater distortion and with two fixed lenses can replace a zoom. In the case of Nikon you don't even need them to be AF. It is assumed that in landscape you have time and a certain freedom to move. For example, I used a AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR but in the range of 24 to 35 mm, the loss of sharpness at the edges was very noticeable and the barrel distortion is not corrected with a simple click. Conclusion, I use a 28 and a 50 prime lenses.

I am a Nikon user. I feel like the Nikon cameras fit better in your hand and they are easier to hold steady. The shutter release button sits in a more upright position which makes it easier to release without camera shake. I like DSLR and don't plan to switch to mirrorless in the near future and Nikon DSLR cameras have far out performed Canon, in my opinion. I shoot sports, landscape, and portrait and much prefer the images I get with Nikon. I have shot both side by side in low light gyms and Canon can't perform as well as Nikon in those situations.

I’ve got a 5Dmk1, 50/1.8, 28-80/3.5-5.6mk1usm, 70-210/3.5-4.5usm and the 28-70/3.5-4.5 (the poor man’s L) all in probably cost me no more than about £400 for the lot and it does me for most things, although I ado also have an Olympus E-M1 mk1 with a couple of zooms …it’s compact and a lot lighter …but I would never get rid of the Canon kit.

I always felt like cannons. Secret sauce in color was what caused them to not be able to have a good dynamic range because once they did have good dynamic range in their cameras, starting with the 5D Mark Iv, and obviously now with the mirrorless, the colors are not the same. Regarding DSLR Specifically Nikon is a little bit more user-friendly, especially with the auto focus system as well. You hit it on the money with dynamic range in retaining the highlights of the dresses, which is something you always experience when being a real photographer, and real shooting situation. Lenses I think they both have a great 2.8 trinity! Which is most important. Then with the primes canon has better high quality primes Nikon has way way better low quality primes! Like you said regarding the 1.8s with my Nikons I made a good living with those 1.8 lenses!!! I actually never bought high end 1.4 Nikon primes didn’t feel the need! While canon I won’t touch!!! Cheaper line of lenses. Garbage!

Great video Martin, I have a 70D and looking for another body I'd like the 5D Mark IV but it's a little out of my price range at present, so after watching your reviews I think I'm possibly going to get the 6D. But here is the issue I do some portrait and headshot photography but I'd also like to do event work. This is the kicker, and please correct me if you think I'm wrong, to do outdoor events or indoor conferences I would need to buy the Canon L lenses. And have you seen the price of these things at present, I feel like people are taking the piss with the prices. But like you say Nikon have dual memory slots on a lot of their bodies and a friend who uses Nikon told me that they have a mid-range lenses that are considerably cheaper than Canon and also weather-sealed. I just don't know whether to change to Nikon or keep with Canon as I have some good Ultrasonic lenses but they are older. I picked up an ultrasonic 70-210 F3.5 - 4.5 with lens hood, like new, in the box for £47.00 HELP it's driving me mad.

Hi firstly thanks for the content i have been a photographer since the late seventies (praktica mtl) in the early eighties got myself a canon (eos 600) to cut a very long story short weddings blah blah portraits blah blah sports(ooh now this i like (70-200 l) then stuff happened fell out of love with photography late eighties early nineties along come my kids dust off camera start loving photography anyway zoom along to now i find myself still loving the canon way i have a few 20,30,40,50d 5d mki mkii 1d mkiii mkiv this is not a flex its all second hand often broken and i get it fixed locally i have a good few lenses too am loving photography but at my age i need light weight so carry about a sony 6300 with a metabones e to ef mount adapter but the hoarder in me also has a helios 58mm a smc pentax 50mm and a tamron 90 mm macro all of this stuff was less than youd think i trawl second hand stores junk shops charity shops and jumble sales but for some reason i still go back to my 5d mki my 85 1.8 or my 20-35L or 40 mm

That fashion photographer that's in the U.K. I forgot his name but he has a large studio. He manual focus but then goes out of focus just a tad to remove the sharpness. Some of today's lens are to sharp. They could add in portrait feature that the lens goes out of focus just a tad. And if a camera has IBIS to move the sensor just a tab to remove sharpness. Pentax did this to remove moire.

If you are new to camera's I can't recommend Canon because of the closed RF system. If time travel was an option, I would have chosen the D600 instead of the 6D at that time. Now I am Canon shooter and kinda stuck because of the massive lens lineup I've build up trough the years.

Anyway, it happened and she said that you are indeed very nice:-) Nikon d600 and 610 are just fantastic bodies. I switched to canon 6d and 7d mk2 and still miss nikon’s high iso performance. I picked up some bird photography and it seemed that switching to canon and used zoom lenses was my best option. It is very difficult to be involved in different genres of photography at the same time and there is no good answer to all these questions:-(

these days, a Canon 5D1 with a 40mm pancake cost less than a Leica Battery... IMO, that 40mm alone is a good reason to own a Canon FF Body for street/travel. Cheap, small, sharp and has AF. Nikon doesn't have an equivalent.

I’m interested because I love taking videos and pictures of wildlife. Especially macro. And I’m no longer satisfied with my iPhone. I want to do professional photo and video for multiple reasons and especially for wildlife. I understand it’s difficult making a living off photography and videography however my main concern is I don’t want to spend my life inside. I want to be outside. And I’ll live with basics as long as I can still provide for my cats and dogs. If it weren’t for my cats and (large) dogs I’d just be homeless.

Well, Canon's top DSLR tried desperately to end my career, so I use Nikon. I will touch a Canon camera for $750,000, but require $1,000,000 per frame to shoot it. You might say Canon does NOT work or play well with others.

I wonder to what extent color science is just a marketing ploy and fixable with a one-to-one preset? Nevertheless, my solution is to get all of them, with the cheapest lenses and converters if need be. Also, chuck in a Sigma Quattro for that foveon look and take some images of your mother-in-law's flowers... you'll never run out of things to shoot. 😂

I feel like these conclusions on color science were born out in Andrew's test even though they were on newer mirrorless bodies. The Nikon had a surprising amount of color cast compared to the others, especially Canon. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j55lrJhpq7vXg30.html My Nikon D600 had incredible highlight and shadow recovery. It made it sort of idiot proof in daylight. My Leica M240 on the other hand, would blowout recovery from highlights, so everyone I know that has one shoots 1/3rd stop under exposed. You just have got to know the camera just like how we used to learn which film gave you what.
