Dear Martin, Thank you very much for an inspirational and uplifting video! It has given me an "Ah Ha!" Moment! I have been photographing flowers on the bench top in my laundry. The light comes from the big sliding door to the garden. I only shoot early in the morning when the light is soft, and I love the natural light! I used a reflector, a piece of cardboard covered with alfoil to bounce the light onto the flower. When I watched your video, I felt a great sense of joy, because it resonated so much with me! I always feel I don't need any other lighting for my flowers, the natural light is so sublime! Thank you so much for sharing your insight with us! I love learning, and your videos and story telling are very enriching! Thank you so much for being a very passionate yet humble educator! (Giang from Australia)

Dear Giang, thank you so much for your heartfelt comment! It warms my heart to hear that the video resonated with you and sparked an 'Ah Ha!' moment. There is so much you can do by simplifying to one light source and a reflector. I appreciate your kind words about my videos. It's always a joy to connect with fellow enthusiasts who share a love for learning and photography. Best regards, Martin

Thanks to this lesson, I have a picture in my mind’s eye of the Sun and it’s reflection from the moon shining it’s light on my composition. The result: a simple composition that holds the eye intrigued.

I like this story! I don’t mind using two flashes but I aim to create the impression of one light. Learning reflective light is a big thing and seeing how it behaves in nature can really improve one’s photography. But it’s hard to replicate artificially. I have watched several of your videos and I enjoy them very much. I really like how you differentiate between the different artistical types of photography. That sorted out so much for me. Thank you❤ I look forward to enroll on one of your courses a bit further on.

Hi Martin, thanks for your comments. You are right, natural light is challenging to replicate, but it is the best foundation to work from. Hope to see you on one of my courses in the near future. Rgds Martin

Martin, what a great story, and so telling. I never gave this a second thought, but for the last maybe 25 years I have “almost exclusively “ used a canon 55-250 lens “ and only occasionally used a 18-55 lens. Of course I have periodically updated my camera, but never found the need to update my lens, and with today’s AI there is really no need. That being said, I would ask your thoughts on defining my work when I enter a open juried show, I know you wrote on this topic, but please share your thoughts on designating my work: mixed media ( photo image ). Best, John

Hi John, it's great to hear about your lens preferences and your approach to photography. When entering an open juried show, defining your work as "mixed media (photo image)" sounds appropriate if you are taking the photograph through hand crafted techniques. However, to provide more specific advice, I would need to see the actual work you're presenting. Best of luck with your submission!

@@MartinOsner Martin, always a pleasure hearing back from you, I would be delighted to sent you some examples of my work and welcome any thoughts you would share. Your patience and enthusiasm in your teaching is appreciated and inspiring. How can I send some examples, and give me a few days to think about how best to do present the work. Best, John

@@MartinOsner Martin, I have no problem showing you some work; however , and this seems to be the issue with Artis I talk to, I don’t use “ hand crafted techniques “ I use iCloud ( photoshop) to a limited degree, but more rely on Topaz studio , and some argue that it is not mixed media. Before we get started, I need to ask you how familiar you are withAI technology, specifically Topaz studio? Best, John

@@MartinOsner always a pleasure hearing from you. I do have a question,however, would you consider AI mix media? John
@MartinOsner
@MartinOsner 8 ай бұрын
Hi John, No, I do not consider AI mixed media. I see AI as a tool to help generate concepts and ideas, but that is as far as I would go with AI. I believe in authentic 'human' art, which I believe will pay off in the end regardless. AI is not a medium; it is an artificial creation.

I used minimalist approach, buy what I need and learn to maximize my equipment. And of course learn lighting.
@MartinOsner
@MartinOsner 10 ай бұрын
Your minimalist approach to photography, focusing on acquiring only what you need and maximising your existing equipment, is a wise strategy. It's fantastic that you recognise the importance of learning lighting - indeed, lighting plays a crucial role in photography and can significantly impact the outcome of your shots. Keep honing your lighting skills, as it's often the key factor that can elevate your work to the next level. Regards Martin

Not a "discussion", but a good story! (I always cringe when the word "discussion" or "chat" is used for a monologue, no matter how good this monologue is. Maybe I'm picky, but as a German this is ingrained … ;-))
