8 ай бұрынFrom the "real world IFR" series, this flight takes you to the Twin Cities Minneapolis/St. Paul - specifically, to the St. Paul Downtown airport (KSTP) right on the Mississippi River. We'll enter the clouds shortly after take-off from Cedar Rapids, IA (KCID) in my Beech Bonanza and fly the ILS Runway 34 approach at the destination airport. As usual with ATC closed captions and close-up views of the avionics systems.

Martin awesome video for ALL IFR pilots. When you got switched direct KIKKY it made me think how nervous I would have been!! The transition back to GPS knowing you had to go back to LOC for the approach! Anytime you want a Co-Pilot let me know. I will buy lunch!

And no reason to be nervous - after all, you've been training with a great instructor, so you are well prepared! 😀 In all seriousness, though: Turning me back to KIKKY after saying I'd get vectors to the final approach course should not have happened. The Opposing Bases guys have discussed this in their podcast a few times. A simple "turn left 20 degrees, intercept the localizer" would have achieved the same thing with a lot less button pushing. If you ever get into a situation like this, don't feel bad to request a heading to intercept final instead. - Martin

I can't imagine the time and editing skills it must take to put together a video like this with all of the overlays, audio, etc. As a newly minted PPL with the itch to get started on instrument training, this video is no doubt a fantastic introduction to real life instrument flying and the skills and knowledge required to stay safe and ahead of the airplane when things get busy. Looking forward to watching many more of your videos.

❤ that switch from vectors to direct to the IF. I think we are going to see much more of that. And your comment about doing the ILS so you won't get rusty on switching made me smile.

Hi Mark! I'd love to put a controller in my Bonanza and throw this scenario ("Direct KIKKI") at them, after "Expect vectors to the ILS". It might be an eye opener... The Opposing Bases guys understand this; they have often commented about this, saying once the aircraft has been told to expect headings, that's what ATC should give them. In my situation here in the video, the controller could easily have said "turn 20 degrees left, intercept the localizer", and we would have achieved the same result with a lot less button pushing (and a lot less opportunity for error). But I think you're probably right - we live in the RNAV world, so we'll likely see more and more of this kind of thing. Have a great weekend! - Martin

@@martinpauly Yeah, it would be nice if once they announced VTF, they gave VTF. Or, as RH and AG have also said, announce vectors to the IF if that's what they are going to do. Fortunately, it's not a big deal with most GA equipment (unless you switch to VTF with a GPS that wipes out the waypoints - the reason I prefer "Activate Leg" as a more universal, cross-platform" solution). But it's a reason the scenario is in my list of special IPC tasks.

I e been flying for 54 years and still actively fly my 1963 P-35 Bonanza in Monterey, California( I’m retired and still live in Delavan, Wisconsin but travel to Monterey via Southwest Airlines every month to stay with my twin brother in Monterey( he’s a retired USAF C-5 pilot). We both learned to fly at KUES and got our private pilot certificate in 1970! We both received the FAA Wright Brothers Award in 2021. We are both active CFII’s and still do instructing. Your videos and techniques are outstanding and helpful as a learning tool! Keep up the excellent and instructive work!!

Congratulations on the Wright Brothers Award - that's outstanding! Delevan, WI - do they still have the little airport there (Lake Lawn, I think) across from the resort? Back in the 1990s I went there a few times for a nice lunch. I heard the runway has deteriorated badly since then, but I haven't been back there to see for myself. - Martin

Yes! Lake Lawn(C59) still open.. the resort across the street is still open and thriving! The runway is a little rough but still usable. Unfortunately no instrument approach.. they used to have an NDB approach but that’s no longer there. I kept my B-19 Beech Sport at Lake lawn from 1983-1987 then bought a hangar at East Troy 57C that I still own. I bought my P-35 Bonanza in 1990 and kept it at 57C till I flew it out to Monterey with my twin brother in November of 2019. The hangar is vacant as of now. Not sure what I’ll do with it but it’s not costing me much to keep it!!

Hi Martin, thanks for another great video. Best documented IFR flights on KZfaq. It‘s a pleasure to watch and learn. We can only imagine how much time it takes to put all the footage together. We didn‘t finish our IFR due to Covid and than FAA stopped the possibility to take IFR check rides outside of the USA. We didn’t realize that you still see all the approach fixes once you have loaded and activated vectors to final. On the G1000 once you have activated and loaded vectors to final, only the final approach fix was visible and if the controller gave you another fix you had to reload the approach. Great that they made this improvement on the GTN750Xi. Many greetings from Switzerland, Cornelia and Christophe

Hi Cornelia and Christophe, thank you for the kind words. I try to check two boxes with my videos, entertainment and training/teaching - and from the comments it looks like this one going to St. Paul hit both of those. You are right about the waypoints leading up to the FAF, and how the GTN750 loads them (on Vectors-to-Final) even though it activates the FAF. This way, the prior waypoints are easily accessible if or when needed. The older GPS devices don't do this, and it can make things more difficult. It's a simple but very useful improvement in the GTN series. Hopefully you'll get a chance to complete your instrument training and rating one day. It's a good skill to have and a rating with a lot of utility. Greetings from Iowa where it's snowing today, though the snow is wasted on us (since we have no mountains to ski from). - Martin

Your commitment to flying like a professional pilot should be an inspiration to all aspiring pilots. The example you set is awesome! An interesting note - one of my mentors and I were talking about identifying a NAVAID aurally vs with the indication on an FMS like your GTN or a G1000. He loaded a VOR approach for training with a new owner. The G1000 identified the VOR correctly, but the couldn't get a course to come in on the HSI. When they turned on the volume for the NAVAID, voice transmissions were being made over the VOR. Of course there was a NOTAM for this, but it is interesting nonetheless. A NAVAID may identify on our system, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is usable for our purposes.

Martin, terrific video. It was especially helpful to see the transition from vectors to final in VLOC, then back to GPS to the dirrrct fix intercept, then back to VLOC and approach mode to fly in on the localizer. Also seeing in real time the reconfiguration to set the plane up to fly the glide slope down. Camera positions were spot on! Thanks again, Rick

Great video, Martin. You make it look so easy. I would like to complement you on the precision of your radio calls and phraseology - not sure anyone does it better. Very impressive. As others have said, your excellent editing makes it so easy to see what's happening. If you get back to Europe I hope you somehow announce it on your channel so we can buy you a beer.

Thanks. And yes, I like paper checklists; in a simple cockpit like the Bonanza, that's really all you need, and it's easier to use than any electronics device I've seen. - Martin

Great to view a video utilizing latest technologies of avionics. Following your checklist which is slightly different than mine is great for building familiarity with the flow of a checklist. Even maintaining currency leaves areas of improvement.

Ah, yes!! Another sunny, clear day in Iowa!! The wife and I were hoping to get back to Cedar Rapids after Thanksgiving. We thought we might fly our Archer, since we now have a cat.... But, I think we missed our window of opportunity. Any IFR will likely include icing conditions. So, it might have to be with Allegiant and the cat in a kennel somewhere. Enjoy riding along with you, Martin. I always learn something. Thank you! Rick in Tucson. And it's Saint Paul... not San Paul... (-:

Another great video! Thanks Martin! Two things: RPM on take off should be 2700 I guess. It’s indicating 2670 only. Not a problem on a super long runway but you might need it on a short runway some time. I had that specifically checked and set to slightly above 2700 on my Bonanza so I have all the power available when I fly out of short grass runways. Second thing: I retract gear only when out of available runway not before. Again, thanks for your videos! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Keep them coming! Fröhliche Weihnachten from 🇩🇪 😃

Good video. But I am really old, I remember flight planning with a with an aluminium MB-4. In the day I held a Zero Zero certification, which was issued by the Navy. And which I was smart enough not to use, in normal situations. But I did make approaches, and land in IFR conditions in unimproved strips at night, no approach plates no navaides.I revered the early aviation pioneers. And I remember using NAVSTAR and GPS long before it was certified for. Aviation is an awesome experience and its amazing how far it has come in such a short period.

Ray, no doubt the pioneer days of aviation were a lot more challenging than flying (and flying on instruments) today. What an adventure it must have been when Jimmy Doolittle took off and landed on instruments for the first time! I started flying in the 1980s, and instrument flying in the 1990s, so an "old" avionics panel to me is one with VOR and ADF. Even that seems a long ways away from what we have available in our panels today! Regards, Martin
