Part II of the San Francisco video shows the preparation for take-off at SFO, including clearance and taxi, followed by take-off and the "Bay Tour" - aerial sightseeing over the famous bay and downtown San Francisco. Challenges on this flight, apart from the large busy airport, were a TFR due to a baseball game at the AT&T Park that we had to fly over or around, and the at times very busy ATC frequencies.
While the Golden Gate Bridge is covered by low clouds, you can enjoy views of Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge, downtown San Francisco, and the SFO airport which we fly over on the way back.
The destination of this flight was Burbank, CA, but we started VFR for the Bay Tour. You'll see how we receive our IFR clearance to Burbank at the end of the video.

My introduction flight to flying was a $99 bay tour flight. I was hooked and went on to get my ppl. It is a beautiful flight.

I can see that. Nothing I can show people here in Iowa gets close to the bay tour! 😁 - Martin

Very Cool Martin, Thx! I’ve flown the Bay Tour often but not SFO and will likely not ever. I started my PPL training 2 months after this video at age 57. Found you through your low IFR as that’s where my head is now after getting IFR rating 😉

Nice to see even pros like Martin make some errors with radios but because of his professionalism it just flowed right by. Thanks for sharing your trip. I’m using the videos for retraining my flying experience.

+Brian McGee Yes - most controllers are friendly and helpful, but I think the ones involved in my SFO flight were particularly nice. We are fortunate to have a great ATC system in the US.

If I was that close with pilot's discretion, I'd be very tempted to fly under the Golden Gate Bridge.

Martin, am enjoying your videos. You make flights into airports such as SFO look so easy!
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, there is really no magic to flying to those larger airports, especially if you can fly an approach speed of 150 knots or more. And if not, these days where traffic volumes at large airports are (unfortunately) lower, it shouldn't be a big issue either. Make sure you have studied the taxi diagram well, because that's where the real challenge is - on the ground. Don't be shy to ask for progressive taxi. - Martin

The only thing I ever think about when I see Alcatraz Island is the terrible sunburn I got when taking a harbor tour around the island. I was miserable for a week after that. I advise heavy sunscreen even if it is slightly overcast. Nice tour martin. Thanks

I toured this area on a Harley-Davidson with many more turns than you did, but I didn't need to get permission. LOL. No idea that flying in a crowded airspace would be so complex. Thanks for another great video.

Bay Approach offer a "Bay Sight Seeing Tour". Just ask Departure Control for the 'Bay Tour" from any of the SF Bay Area airports.
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 6 жыл бұрын
That's right. You'll hear me ask for the "Bay Tour" at 4:07 in the video. It sounded a lot more complicated because I had an IFR flight plan on file that eventually I needed to pick up, to Burbank. The Clearance controller was very helpful here!

Awesome videos M. Pauley. Do you fly for a living? If KZfaq gave out awards I'm certain you would get several. lol. Great visuals, audio (communications), text add ons, etc. Flying and editing of videos both professional quality . Well appreciated. Entertaining and a low hour pilot like myself can learn a thing or 2 from them. Thanks, Keep em coming.

Hi Paolo, I agree it is nice to see the whole cockpit at times. I guess I need more cameras! :-) Take a look at the two videos I have in Atlanta (arrival / departure); there I have a camera in the back on a tripod that shows views of the whole cockpit every now and then.

Hi Martin. I am enjoying watching all your videos. They are very nicely done. I am just about to buy a Bonanza f33a 1992. The current owner flies the plane no more than 30 hrs per year. Do you think this low time of use would be a problem for the engine and overall maintenance of the plane? Thank you
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. 30 hours per year isn't much time for an airplane, but if that's a short flight, say, every other week throughout the year, than I believe it still serves the purpose of exercising the engine. If it was just a lot of flying for a one-a-year vacation trip, followed by 50 weeks of sitting in the hangar, I'd be more concerned. I assume you did a pre-buy inspection with an independent mechanic? They would know what to look at, based on the plane's history. Best of luck with the purchase! - Martin

They seriously need to change the voice of the ATIS guy. Jim CYWG
@martinpauly
@martinpauly 5 жыл бұрын
That, that old ATIS system is a bit antiquated. My other complaint with the typical large-airport ATIS is it is much too verbose and long. A lot of what's on there isn't really all that important, like the thousands of taxiway closures (Tower determines your taxi route anyway) or "birds in the vicinity of the airport" (when are those NOT around?). So less could be more here. Best, Martin
