Marty Robbins Old Red Live
I was raised with Marty Robbins music, Burel Mulkey was a family friend and idol when I was a kid and this song reminded me of Burel, who was a world champion and all around bronc rider in the 30's.. He set the NEW STYLE along with his running mate Nick Knight on how to dress up a bronc ride, toes out and raking the neck.. The norm was to dress em up by fanning with your hat...Burel and Nick changed all that.. RIP Champ.
Most pictures are from my grandparents and some off the internet..
This is my tribute to the ONE and ONLY Burel Mulkey
Saddle Bronc Rider • Inducted 2011
Known among his peers as the “Shetland Stud” or the “Banty Cowboy,” Burel Mulkey had strength that belied his 5-6, 165 pound stature, allowing him to excel at a time when saddle bronc riders had to stay on for 12 seconds (10 indoors) to earn a score.
Mulkey was one of the sport’s most colorful performers in the 1930s with his love of pranks, his trademark black satin shirt and his penchant for going all out on every ride. He won the 1937 world saddle bronc riding championship and was do dominant the following year that he not only repeated his saddle bronc riding triumph, but was named world all-around champion because his earnings surpassed all of the mutli-event contestants.
He had wins at virtually every major venue of the port in his day, including Madison Square Garden; Fort Worth, Texas; Reno, Nev,; Salinas, Calif.; Los Angeles and that saddle bronc riding Mecca, Deadwood, S.D.
Mulkey was one of the 61 cowboys who stepped forward at Boston Garden in 1936 to sign the petition demanding fair treatment that led to creation of the Turtles’ Cowboy Association, precursor to the current-day Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He is the seventh of those Founding Fathers to achieve induction into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame based on their achievements in the arena.
World Championships: 3 (Saddle Bronc 1937-38; All Around 1938)
Born May 25, 1904 in Clyde, Idaho
Died November 20, 1982 in Lake Isabella, Calif

You just can't beat Marty. So talented was he. Probably the most versatile singer ever. Played piano, guitar, wrote most of the songs he sang, and absolutely the prettiest voice God ever gave to a man. A pure genius.

The only man that could take you back to a time imagined or real, when he sings you can imagine you are there watching. That's called talent I suppose.

I cannot stand today's country music only Red Dirt country music has any sense to it but nothing like this is on the radio anymore. in fact I've yet to hear radio station lately claim to be a country and western station there's no more western music left all we got is Marty Robbins and a lot of Old-Timers like him to listen to if you want to hear western music

Absolut classic; real western music sadly doesn't exist in today's "country" - or whatever they call it nowadays.

This was real Western music. My dad and uncles exposed me to it several decades ago. RIP Marty

This song is the perfect tale of what happens when two indomitable spirits meet and clash.

My dad was a barrel racer, he expected his youngest to be the same rider. But I got no points in the bucking competitions. Everthing I tried to to ride accepted me as a rider. But then they probably knew I'd feed them anyway.

Marty was not only blessed with one of the most beautiful voices a man ever had, but goodness me, how about his songwriting? As wonderfully versatile as his singing was. A special, once in a lifetime talent.

Maan as a black man and many throughout the Caribbean consider the profundity of his songs exceptional..unparalleled! No western singer encapsulate that cowboy 18 century epoch like Marty!!! Real doesn’t sound like them water down wall paper, checker table cloth Jean Autry thing lol.

OMG. I loved that man's voice and his music ! Truly talented! From what I've read and interviews with his family he was a faithful husband and great father. Married his teenage sweet heart , 34 years until the day he died . Gone too young.
