An easy way to open those breakers is to lay them on the concrete and lay a rag or towel over it and hit them with a hammer. Not too hard but hard enough you feel it breaking into pieces. The rag or towel should be an old one that you don’t want because sometimes it tears little holes in the material. Sometimes you may have to flip it over an tap the other side, but I can do a breaker in about 45 seconds to a minute and have the contacts out.

I worked in a scrap metal recycling company for over 30 years we would get breakers for industrial machinery 440 plus. The silver contacts were the size of quarters

I'm amaze that I worked in demolition, highway & bldg many years throwing circuit in the trash. Not all scrappers knows everything. Just retire and now I'm sad. Lost a lot of scrap money 💰. New hobbies for the future. Thanks for the info.

I scrapped three 3-phase industrial 300 amp CB's from a hospital remodel. I ended up with 7# of silver and one load of copper (not all of it) brought in $700+ at the time. Sold most of the silver but retained a few pounds, I think I got about 1K out of that. Hind sight is great, yeah, wish I hung onto it. Another opportunity will come along.

Be careful, some buttons are sandwiches of differnt metals, some cadmium, which is toxic.

I cleaned out a barn a few years a go and scraped totes full of breakers and electrical connectors. I didn't see copper so they went in with everything else , white metal. When I realised I was sick. But seerating or finding anyone to pay you more is almost impossible.

This button needs to be refined much further to be able to sell to anybody. Which is a lot more work and chemicals than what you did here. If it was just melting pure silver it’d be one thing. You’d have to have a massive pile of these to make it worth it and then it still may not be worth it for what it takes.

Copper components are typically plated with tin for corrosion resistance. This is why you were questioning if the first breaker had a steel component.

I used to be a Customs Broker and one of my customers was Harris Semiconductor in Melbourne, Fl. They would get back rejected semiconductors that had gold in them. Their traffic manager got this bright idea one day to recoup the gold so I put several barrels in the foreign trade zone and suddenly it was my job to figure a way to extract the gold. Their traffic manager made the suguestion that I break them up with a hammer. After about a minute I was done and he was pissed. I told him to hit the road as I had more important things to do.

Something we all need to understand. Due to being on the cusp of many new technological breakthroughs, there will be much more new tech equipment with silver in it l especially solar at the moment).With no new silver deposits in the ground and even one of the five U.S. refineries closing, the surging demand for silver will make the price to skyrocket. It is entirely possible that it will even surpass the price of gold.
