THIS VIDEO WAS FILMED ON JANUARY 2020
About me, Mar: I am an animation graduate with honors from a vocational school (Tokyo Design Academy, 2-year course). Spanish, 5 years living in Japan. I am now sustained by a marketing-related day job while creating my own media company focused on anime/comic. I have not worked directly in the anime industry in Japan but I learned about it from school and other professionals I networked with! Please take my advice as someone with half a step in, but do research more on your own (especially the legal matters).

I was just searching ' ANIMATION SCHOOLS IN JAPAN' and your video popped up. I am 18yrs old and want to become an animator based in Japan. But when i saw the criteria for most of the school, they were asking for N3-N2 JLPT level, which is quite high. Then i searched for LANGUAGE SCHOOLS but they were quite expensive for my financial status and as I want to pursue animation also after that, that would add up a lot. So I thought that I should study Japanese in my country only and when am fluent then i would apply for scholarship, that would take a lot of pressure off me and my parents. But have a question, like the Bachelors of Arts (Japanese) is of 3years and after that when i go to animation school there also it will be of 3-4 years courses, so i wanted to ask, like am i wasting too much time for learning Japanese? And can I pass JLPT after 1or2 years of learning? What do you suggest? Thanks for this conversation, it was very helpful! 👍 IT WILL HELP A LOT IF YOU CAN ANSWER.

Thank you! My general advice for becoming a great animator is practice. Try drawing animating what you like as well as animation/drawing fundamentals such as perspective, body movement, etc. Studying animation directly in Japan has many benefits but it requires for good financial foundation and learning Japanese beforehand. I may do a live stream where I will be open to questions like these. if I do, I'll let you know in case you want to join :)

@@prabhatmidha7433 At my understanding, many animators have low monthly income. But it is not about overtime exactly. Many animators are paid as freelancers. So more than "overtime", they work many hours so all the drawings they make pile up to make enough money.

How long will it take for animation series for kids for locals population in KZfaq to gain some success
@MaruExposito

That depends on the income stream of such KZfaq series. If it is only through ads, it might be impositble. If they have merch, sponsors, crowdfunding,... then it is more likely to spike up faster.

Your requrements depend on your nationality as wel as the type of school/course you will apply for. As I am not a lawyer or study abroad agent, I can't help here. In my case, for a vocational school it was important that I had at least high school degree, and a high level of Japanese (N2).

Hey Mar. I heard in many places you need a bachelors degree in order to get a working visa. I'm 23, I have a 2-year college diploma in animation in Canada, do you think it would be possible to get a visa if I got hired by a studio there? edit: I understand I might have to study animation again in japan, but would I need to go through a full 4 years bachelor's? or a shorter 1 to 2 years course would be enough?
@MaruExposito
@MaruExposito Жыл бұрын
Hi Felipe! Thank you for your comment. Hmmm I think that having that 2 years official course after high school studies may help, especially if it is related to the job you are applying for. But I am not sure on the guarantee of getting accepted as it depends on immigration. The most important part, as far as I know, is to find that studio to hire you in Japan and to help you (sponsor you) to apply for the work visa in the first place. That studio may have some staff or connection to help prepare your papers and case.

Hello Mar, I just found your channel and subscribed and I hope you see my comment. I appreciate your replies on how to get an animation job in Japan. But I'm still an animation student and I was looking to see if you have any tips for an animation internship in a Japanese Studio. My school also traditionally teaches animation, so we do everything on pencil and paper and use the light table and tools you discussed in this video. There's no information about interning at an animation studio in Japan online(as far as I have checked) but I do believe its possible as Japanese animation schools exist so there should be opportunities for them to intern in a select studio during their time of study Unfortunately, I may not be able to speak Japanese but as I was accepted into a french animation school without knowing french, I also believe it's possible to intern at a Japanese studio without knowing Japanese as well because in the end the portfolio/demo reel/skill matters. I have 12 months to build up my skill set and make a decent level portfolio for a possible studio, but the problem is contacting said Japanese studios or how their internship recruitment process work, You said connections help in things like this, and I know no one but you now Mar :D, so if you could help in any way possible would be much appreciated. Thanks!
@MaruExposito
@MaruExposito 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Akin! If I am honest, I do not know much about internships in animation studios in Japan, and I am not sure they would take someone who does not speak the language yet. However, if you are an adult (don't tell us in a public comment!) you may be able to get work as a freelancer for easy cuts if catching some PA (production assistant) looking for rookies online inplaces like Twitter. You can use translating apps to help you in that but of course they won't catch nuances, and may cause trouble at some point. That may get you some starting contacts, practice, and maybe lead to know more about internships if that is a thing. I hope that helps even if it is just a bit. Best luck
