Jesus y’all are sooo simple the metaphor is as obvious as the nose on ur faces the metaphor with the birds is that even tho Lewis wanted to free the birds by opening the cage and placing it towards the open window even with all the opportunity the birds had to become free they didn’t want too leave they still rather preferred to remain in the cage I:e enslaved this double ontandra applies to anybody in society we now live in so much of us are caged up and are mental slaves to modern society
@reisanderson9069

That even with a chance for us to become free we don’t want to we’d rather prefer to remain mental slaves because that’s were were most comfortable and used too this metaphor implies that so many of us are like caged birds it’s quite powerful yet pretty obvious to see what they were doing with this spot

Actually, I wouldn't say Lewis' decision is coward. For that one moment he trapped himself in the hole, he had a moment of clarity and realized he had become a monster. He knew if he continue to live, he was just going to cause more pain, so he ended it. It's not something a coward would do. The only thing I feel bad about is his dad. Poor bastard.

That’s definitely one way to look at it and makes sense. Seriously, his dad just wanted to help his boy. Very sad. At least he knows his son doesn’t hurt anymore unless he’s living in hell of course. - Steven

Lewis is such a sad character. He's trapped inside himself just like the birds - the simple way out isn't the choice he wants. Going out there and live will be harder than just staying in your path. Just like the bird there's no going back.

I believe the birds metaphor is representing Lewis with his mind trapped in the soldier mentality and his ptsd from his time in Iraq. Also with him trying his best to get the birds out without hurting or killing them represents the people around him such as his dad, Curtis and the therapy group trying to peacefully heal him. But despite all their efforts they can't help him. Great visual storytelling right there.
@curtisd5864

Same. Lewis is the bird who can't escape the cage, even when someone else (his dad/Curtis) is trying to show him the way out. It reminded me a lot of the story Curtis told at the very beginning of the show about the soldier trapped in a hole who can't get out on his own. I love what a great memory & attention to detail this show has.

I interpreted them completely different. For me, they represent the society Lewis wants to "free" from the rules/norms that hold him back (because in his mind he's not a terrorist but a freedom fighter). But society doesn't actually want to have that kind or that much of freedom and likes the safety of the rules (or in case of the birds the cage). But your theory is also accurate, now that I think of it.
@treygoldsworthy1402

That's another good way of interpreting it. Which also adds to why that scene was so brilliant, it's open to multiple interpretations and I even thought of what you said when I was first thinking about it.
@NikkiStevenReact

It’s just another element that makes this show so great. Both of these interpretations of that scene feel like they are true. Lewis is an extremely deep character dealing with stuff way beyond most of our comprehension. They could have just made him and angry soldier home from war but his story and background is so much more. Thank you for sharing. - Steven

My take on the birds and Lewis is he thinks his own situation is a cage he's trying to break free from, so he thinks everyone else is in a cage as well...that he's trying to free them from. Not understanding that birds like that just think of the cage as home and safe, and would actually be damaged or in danger if they weren't protected BY that cage. Metaphors for how people view their lives and living conditions, blah blah blah, hopefully that makes sense. My take on it anyway. Also ... this episode made me realize I really, really want Frank and Karen to be together (MY SHIPPER HEART), but at the same time I really like that they just made it obvious the two care about each other but neither feels it needs to go all romance-y ... especially not in a pressure situation. But you feel the support there. :D

Andrew Fedge what also sucks is that birds aren't the sort that adapt easily, if a dog or a cat was given a new owner they can adapt, Birds however? They imprint in a young age and even if given a new owner, they will be problem birds for the rest of their lives because in their mind they're going, 'Where's Mama!?' Also yes, Kastle shippers had their shipping levels read, 'HOLY SHIT!' As the interaction is heartwarming as all hell and some of us probably went, 'Kiss damn you!!'

Those birds are the soldiers in this show. They're put in this system that demands a lot out of them so they're stuck in their own cages. And Lewis is frustrated that he's trying to get them out not realizing that some people need to come out of their own cages in their own way. Some might even like the cage, like Billy or arguably Frank. I'd explain more but the only examples I can think of are in future episodes so I don't want to spoil anything.

The scene where Lewis kills one of the ANVIL contractors and tries to free the birds from the cage was amazing, whoever thought of that is brilliant. It shows how Lewis` cause is a lost one and that people do not want change because they have become accustomed to the way things are. The birds did not want to leave since they got used to being in the cage and would not know what to do without their owner. Similarly, people would not know what to do without the "institution" that Lewis is trying to bring down.

Lewis is such tragic figure. And his story is a realistic, albiet an extreme, story about what soliders with PTSD can do if no help or support ar given to them. Frank sees in Lewis how it could have happened to himself if things had gone slightly different. Even if the actions of Lewis are brutal, non-excuseable and violent. I, for the most part, felt heartbroken for Lewis. How can we allow a society to treat our soldiers like shit when they return home after having given their all for the country?

Lewis’ story is absolutely tragic and so sad that the help he was getting wasn’t helping... Could his dad or Curtis done more? I felt he needed to be taken out because of all the destruction he was causing but felt a little sad and angry the moment the bomb went off.

The Young British Soldier: WHEN the 'arf-made recruity goes out to the East 'E acts like a babe an' 'e drinks like a beast, An' 'e wonders because 'e is frequent deceased Ere 'e's fit for to serve as a soldier. Serve, serve, serve as a soldier, Serve, serve, serve as a soldier, Serve, serve, serve as a soldier, So-oldier of the Queen! Now all you recruities what's drafted to-day, You shut up your rag-box an' 'ark to my lay, An' I'll sing you a soldier as far as I may: A soldier what's fit for a soldier. Fit, fit, fit for a soldier . . . First mind you steer clear o' the grog-sellers' huts, For they sell you Fixed Bay'nets that rots out your guts - Ay, drink that 'ud eat the live steel from your butts - An' it's bad for the young British soldier. Bad, bad, bad for the soldier . . . When the cholera comes - as it will past a doubt - Keep out of the wet and don't go on the shout, For the sickness gets in as the liquor dies out, An' it crumples the young British soldier. Crum-, crum-, crumples the soldier . . . But the worst o' your foes is the sun over'ead: You must wear your 'elmet for all that is said: If 'e finds you uncovered 'e'll knock you down dead, An' you'll die like a fool of a soldier. Fool, fool, fool of a soldier . . . If you're cast for fatigue by a sergeant unkind, Don't grouse like a woman nor crack on nor blind; Be handy and civil, and then you will find That it's beer for the young British soldier. Beer, beer, beer for the soldier . . . Now, if you must marry, take care she is old - A troop-sergeant's widow's the nicest I'm told, For beauty won't help if your rations is cold, Nor love ain't enough for a soldier. 'Nough, 'nough, 'nough for a soldier . . . If the wife should go wrong with a comrade, be loath To shoot when you catch 'em - you'll swing, on my oath! - Make 'im take 'er and keep 'er: that's Hell for them both, An' you're shut o' the curse of a soldier. Curse, curse, curse of a soldier . . . When first under fire an' you're wishful to duck, Don't look nor take 'eed at the man that is struck, Be thankful you're livin', and trust to your luck And march to your front like a soldier. Front, front, front like a soldier . . . When 'arf of your bullets fly wide in the ditch, Don't call your Martini a cross-eyed old bitch; She's human as you are - you treat her as sich, An' she'll fight for the young British soldier. Fight, fight, fight for the soldier . . . When shakin' their bustles like ladies so fine, The guns o' the enemy wheel into line, Shoot low at the limbers an' don't mind the shine, For noise never startles the soldier. Start-, start-, startles the soldier . . . If your officer's dead and the sergeants look white, Remember it's ruin to run from a fight: So take open order, lie down, and sit tight, And wait for supports like a soldier. Wait, wait, wait like a soldier . . . When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, And the women come out to cut up what remains, Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains An' go to your Gawd like a soldier. Go, go, go like a soldier, Go, go, go like a soldier, Go, go, go like a soldier, So-oldier of the Queen!

Nikki has become the female Punisher: @11:04 "Bitch! Don't be shooting my Frank!" LOL!!!!! So much going on in this episode and so many great scenes. The acting continues to be extraordinary. The action scenes are great, but Karen and Frank in the elevator is such a great moment that I think is fantastic. So much is communicated between them without a word being spoken and very minimal movement. Two very talented actors. There are not enough good words to say about this show. Great episode and great reaction! The roller coaster ride continues! Eagerly standing by for the next installment!

It's episodes like these that make you appreciate the fact that Frank Castle is the only Hero in the Marvel Netfilx series with no superpowers whatsoever. No heightened senses to dodge and predict movements, no super human strength, invulnerable skin, rapid healing, or chi-powered fist. He's just a rough tough human killing machine. And Jon Bernthal maybe the smallest guy to ever play the Punisher (he's 5'10 and all the other guys were 6'1, 6'4, and 6'5), but I got a feeling this Frank Castle has that pound for pound strength. I mean, the guy was able to pull himself out of the elevator even with his arm all jacked up.

Not sure if anyone answered this yet but what happened at 7:52 is called a "ranger roll". It's a way of picking someone (most likely unconscious) up by using your momentum from a roll to hoist them over your shoulder into a fireman's carry position. I think the birds are a parallel to Lewis, when the only way he could be comfortable was to dig himself a hole in the backyard. The birds have no reason to leave. They're safe, content and cared for. Lewis didn't understand that, at first. He just saw animals in a cage, applied his own personal context to that and tried to "free" them.
@aloofdragons625
@aloofdragons625 6 жыл бұрын
Mmmm the birds in the cage. The birds are together, used to captivity and used to a way of life inside that cage. Lewis sees that as being trapped, because that's how he feels. So he wants to break them free. But the birds are USED to the routine and used to being trapped an in that cage; it's where they feel safe. I think it's playing with the idea of freedom and what it truly means to be "free". Just my take on it. Honestly, DONT TALK TO ME about Karen and Frank in the elevator. After all that's happened, Karen is one of the only ones who sees FRANK and not "The Punisher". She's seen his humanity, she's seen his vulnerability. And he just saved her. She allows him a safe space for a moment of peace. For him to just breathe there with her with their foreheads touching. She allows that safe space for Frank to unravel, if only for a moment, to let him show his emotions. UGH. UUUUGH. *SLAMS HaND ON TABLE* I LOVE FRANK CASTLE SO FUCKING MUCH I WANT TO PROTECT HIM NO ONE TOUCH HIM HE'S HONESTLY SO AMAZING Also, FUCK Billy.

Lewis killed the guy with the birds to get his hands on the Anvil gear. At that point Lewis has probably realized that he's gotten himself into a situation he can't get out of. The birds are innocents, and while he can't free himself, he hopes to do something good by freeing them.

I know this is an old video, but i would like to say that the roll and pick up that Frank did is a combat roll that people in the service learn. I am not in the service so i do not know if everyone learns it, but i believe medics learn it, as well as infantry. Correct me if i am wrong of course. But i have seen a video of a man from the marines that can do that. You need to be very strong and coordinated to do it though, and to do it on a dead weight body would be near impossible for any normal person. Just showing again that Frank is no normal person.

I think the bird cage and the birds represent Lewis' state of mind. He is trapped in his own cage and even when the door opened and the way to freedom was prepared, he did not step out of that cage. His father offered to help, and so did Curtis. He refused both. The moral of the story is ... sometimes you can't make it alone and should take help when it is offered.

I know i'm a bit behind the power curve. But I figured I'd toss in some input. The character Lewis is based heavily off of Timothy McVeigh (OKC Bomber), right down to his unit he served in, as well as his manifesto. The birds in the cage were there to signify society (birds) being constrained by the law of the federal government (cage), and how society is unwilling to leave the precieved security provided by the Federal government in order to hang onto their liberties. Lewis is a harsh representation on how easy it is to radicalize damaged individuals, be it PTSD, Religious motivation or similar things. In this case (similar to McVeigh) he used his military service as the justification of his actions under the 'To defend against enemies, foreign and domestic' part of the oath every servicemen takes when they join the Armed Forces.

I highly recommend that you guys watch and react to Daredevil Season 1, Jessica Jones then Daredevil Season 2. They are worth it! Even if you don't react to them, you should watch them. For me, they're tied for second place after the Punisher in quality and storytelling... just in completely different ways. They do all take a dip in story or pacing in a few episodes. Punisher is the first Marvel Netflix show that the quality just went up and up every episode. DD will give you all the backstory on Karen and more of Frank in Season 2. Love your reactions!

Episode 10 is a 10! So far, a lot has come to light. So, if you think Frank is a badass now, I suspect you ain't seen nothing yet! Can't wait for your next reaction!

My opinion : I think he is locked in a system that change (wild) is that although he will want to find his humanity it will remain impossible for him now. The birds are no longer wild but he yes and unlike birds that can be free but choose their comfort (domesticate), he is wild is wants to be human again but can not live in this cage (life in society). PS: I recommend the animated film Jin Roh the Wolf Brigade.

The birds represent society, that we are so accustomed to our cage that society built for us that we don't even try to get freedom and leave when we have the chance.

i know im late. When it comes to the birds.... The way i interpret it is.. When he looked at the birds, he saw a reflection of himself(projected). the former is a more beautiful way of saying it isnt it?.... So he is trapped. trapped inside his emotions, I leave it up to yall to decide what emotions he is trapped in and how to describe them. So he wanted to free the birds, like he wished he could be freed. now.. outside of him and the birds, the full representation in my opinion is saying.... They no longer wish to be freed... they have accepted their existence, like he has. an existence of pain, hatred, and misery in his case. and there is no greener side.

I think lewis wanting to free the birds was representing his feelings about how he wanted to protect the freedom of the country he fought for. But, like the birds, he realized some Americans don't want that change to happen, and are perfectly happy where they are now.

he thinks he knows what's good for everyone and he thinks he knows what freedom is, yet he's too stupid to know that a caged parakeet's wings are gonna be clipped and that they wouldn't survive in the wild.

Though some say it's hyoocricy that senator uses armed guard despite being anti-gun, I think it could be argued that hardly he meant to take guns from organisations giving armed protection and trained to do so

I don't think the symbolism is in Lewis wanting to free the birds. I think it lies more in that the birds don't want to free themselves.

Calling lewis coward is not a right thing actually.he is a very complex character and to fully understand his mental state of mind you need to dig deep into what he has been through. Right before blowing himself up he just released his frustration about what happened in Afghanistan. And at that very moment he realised that the only way possible he could end his pain is to die. In real terms he is shown to be a critical case of PTSD.

Lewis is easy to figure out. He’s watched way too many conspiracy videos on KZfaq, he has no clue of what is happening for normal people, he has a ton of training, and he was cut loose. He was lied to. Manipulated his whole life. Simply hurt. Simply rabid
