His parents did care about him. His mother didn't try to kill him because he was ugly, she tried to kill him because Lady Death drove her mad when she looked into his eyes. Death made Thanos a universal constant, which means he's an evil death worshiper in every alternate universe, his mother saw that, when she looked into his eyes, and that was too much for her to handle.

I am a big Starlin fanboy, anything that doesn't follow his line of work, or even worse retcons it is bad. And since Rising basically is half a retcon that set that garbage of Infinity, and the other half is still a retcon that pretends the main character never had any free will but it was all Slutty (and possibly an illusion too) Lady Death's fault, which is basically three retcons by herself; I simply despite it. The only thing I cherish from Rising is that it taught me an obvious lesson that I learned too late: most writers have no idea of how to properly follow an existing continuity, so instead of complaining like an imbecile, one should simply read the good story and discard the rest, like any Thanos story not written by Marz, Giffen, Abnett/Lanning and obviously Starlin himself. Am I still not enough nerd for your standard?

I guess you mean "unrealistic" as actions and motivation. Thanos motives and stories are just "realistic" as greek and scandinavian mythos about relationships between gods and mortals. He's The MAD Titan for a reason. The only reason why someone would prefer his MCU motivation is because comic Thanos mind would hurt their brains.
