Aside from the Federation and the Ferengi, not many space faring races use phasers. This is because phasers vs disruptors phasers are more complex to make and the only reason the Federation uses phasers is that they have a high degree of consideration for life regarless of friend or foe. Most other space faring races uses disruptor or some variant of.

The biggest difference is that phasers can be adjusted to be a tool, not just a weapon. Disruptors tend to only be able to destroy.

When it comes to the destructive power of the phaser it really depends on the size because certain ones aren't crazy powerful. In the episode A Piece of the Action Kirk implies a hand phaser or phaser # 1 might knock out the side of the building they're in if fired. I want to say Kirk meant if you fire it you could hit and destroy a support beam and take an entire section of building if not careful. Because in episodes like Devil in the Dark, Arena, and others it is fully stated that a phaser # 1 is far less powerful than a phaser # 2 but to do heavy damage but we never see even phaser rifles wipe out massive rock formations and lord knows in DS9 that would have come in handy.

My favorite phasers will always be those of The Original Series. Perhaps because they resemble our handheld firearms. Except for the first episode in season 1, a rifle phaser is never seen in TOS.

Not all "space shows" had "energy weapons" as the show Firefly (and the follow up movie Serenity) used projectile weapons, that shot typical bullets from them!! In fact only one episode of Firefly (Episode title: Trash) showed a "laser pistol" that was unique, but basically worthless in it!! Even Firefly's Jane Cobb, who owned Vera, which was a rifle shot normal bullets, and required "air around her" to be fired in space!!

I never thought that phasers were actually that good of a weapon tactically as it had quite a few flaws to be a military weapon in most of its depictions. For one thing, and this is not true for every version of the phaser, is that it is a single shot weapon. The person firing the phaser has to remain exposed to enemy fire for several seconds while its single shot completes its firing sequence before you can fire the next shot, in which the process repeats again. This is true for the handheld type 1 phaser, all the way to shipboard versions. The phasers from The Next Generation era onward, don't appear to be very ergonomically designed for humanoid hands and has a thumb trigger. The Kirk era phasers, at least, had pistol grips with a forefinger trigger and the TNG era phaser power settings weren't conveniently placed either. The phaser rifle or type three phaser, from the Kirk era and the TNG era as well, were very bulky, in the TOS era in design and boxy in the TNG era. Voyager introduced the Phased Compression Rifle which, in design, harkened back to the TOS era in design and was, eventually, thrown away om favor of the TNG movie era design with absolutely no explanation whatsoever. The TNG movie era phaser rifle was a far better design, in my opinion, as it fired balls of energy rather than beams and fired in, what appeared to be, a semiautomatic firing pattern. The phased plasma guns of the Enterprise era were a much better design, I believe, at least with the rifle. The pistol, while appearing similar to the TOS in design, still had the same problem with the other handheld designs in regard to the firing sequence Lower Decks, Picard, Discovery and Strange New Worlds, I haven't watched with the same dedication that I watched the older series so I can't comment on except for this. Lower Decks takes place in the same time period as TNG. Discovery and Strange New Worlds takes place BEFORE TOS and, in Discovery's case, long after. Picard takes place long after Voyager

That was just special effects and your just mak8ng things up. Plasma or phasers would move faster than the speed of light in the envoronment that C is set in. Just like the glow of radiation from nuclear reactors. The light you see is an effect from the radiation moving faster than what the heavy water would allow light to move in. Light travels slower in earyhs atmoshere than it does in the vacuum of space. The light from the phasers is just an effect you wouldnt be able to see what exactly is the mass or energy makeup that is causing the effect to the body or object
@dragonweyr44
@dragonweyr44 Жыл бұрын
@@seansullivan7928 Really? Cause I could swear that they have to fire and hold fire on a target for several seconds with each shot. Possibly because they have to wait until sufficient energy is transferred from weapon to target for the desired result to be achieved, whether it would be enough to stun the enemy or disintegrate the target.

@@seansullivan7928Plasma doesn't travel faster than light. The beam of light that can be seen is what the plasma is emitting. The light that is seen isn't trailing behind the plasma. A good example in real life is tracer bullets. One shot fires only one projectile. That single projectile is glowing the entire time. Since it is traveling faster than what our eyes are capable of seeing, all we see is a "beam" of light.

I want to say that original in dialogue of The Cage they were called lasers but in the second pilot Where No Man Has Gone Before it was changed phaser. So I chalk it up to a creator's retcon the same way it's implied the downed ship in The Cage may not have even had warp drive or much warp speed given the helmsman of the away team says the time barrier has been broken, which wouldn't make much sense given the distance the downed ship had traveled already.

TASERS (an actual brand name for a Conductive Energy Weapon) cannot have their power output adjusted. You are given whatever level of voltage that particular CEW is designed for and that's it. By the way, could you say 2 or 3 more times how phasers are the pinnacle of weapons for any future society or phrases like capacity to incapacitate...lol

The Tasers that police officers use cannot be adjusted by the officers. Some Tasers have multiple cartridges that an officer can use. But they all operate at the same power level. Being required to calculate the power needed on a per person basis requires clairvoyance. And the thought that all the choices an officer has to make in a split second, use open hand force, use pepper spray, use a night stick, a Taser or use deadly force can be made that guarantees a good outcome at all times for all persons involved is faulty thinking. One wrong choice has deadly consequences for one or more parties. And of course it’s always the police officer who chose wrong. Not the bad guy holding a deadly weapon. Star Fleet weapons would be welcome.

In the first pilot they where quite different than the 3 year run of the show witch was very well designed and probably the nicest looking and most detailed of all of the star treks to come but in the first pilot they looked kind of cheaply put together budget no doubt but they where referred to as lasers in pilot one the second pilot used the same prop and a phaser riffle was introduced and through out the original series the original prop would show up in the first season in the hands of people who had not been contacted for years so it would make sense that the older model is what they where left with many things in the 2 pilots worked back into the show rather than spend the limited budget on designing a completely new object things could be reused turned over with lights added and colors changed.

I didn't like the inconsistencies in the phasers. Sometimes the original Enterprise fired and they were blue sometimes they were red. Sometimes the phaser rifles in TNG and DS9 fired a long beam other times just a pulse of energy. Didn't really make sense. Also we know phasers can vaporize people but whenever there was a major battle they never vaporized enemies. The dominion war was a perfect example of that, they just shot soldiers and they went down.
@candyb357
@candyb357 10 ай бұрын
In battle you need to conserve energy. Why vaporize your energy when maybe a quarter of power will still kill. Thus giving your weapons four times the use out of it before it needs to be recharged and if you are cut off, recharging might not be an option so you definitely need to make your energy last
@Emissary355

@@candyb357 In any battle they never vaporized enemies, why even have that setting if it isn't necessary to kill? It's an inconsistency that doesn't make sense. Also you don't know it takes four times the power on the highest setting to vaporize you are just guessing.

This video doesnt account for Star Trek: Dicovery, or Star Trek: Strange New Worlds or Star Trek: Picard. Strange New Worlds (and Discovery before it, really) introduced a new Type III phaser rifle that looks way less clunky than the one used in the 2nd pilot of TOS Star Trek: Picard introduced a new type II phaser that almost returns to the roots of the phaser, looking more like a pistol than its 2270s predecessor, while keeping the 24th century aesthetic, alongside a new, somewhat more compact Type III Rifle. There is also a variant pistol shown in Season 2 of Picard that is used by the alternate Confederation of Planets.
