a guy I know worked in one of the big record stores in downtown DC when this record came out .. Motown wasn't expecting much in terms of sales, especially in "white" areas ... they sold more than 300 copies in their store on the first Saturday the record was released, and he said for the rest of the summer, " you couldn't go anywhere in DC without hearing this record blasting out of windows."

The first time I heard Marvin I was dancing in a Pub in London with my sister, I was 16, I said to her who’s this? It’s beautiful, we were both musically educated that day, I am now 66 and still listening to Marvin, he will always be my favourite artist and hers too. When I eventually get to the pearly gates I’m going to find Marvin and thank him for giving me so many years of lovely memories. 😊

@@hanstun1 I gotta disagree, its a powerful message mixed with strings and James Jamerson (In my opinion) it is one of the best songs on the "A" side of the album. Obviously you can disagree but man those vocal runs by Marvin along with the bass playing by James really make this song shine.

@@agnidas5816 It was a rhetorical question just commenting on the quality of the platter. I always wanted to hear those laser-equipped vinyl players that were 10K when they came out that looked like a huge CD player and supposedly got the laser down in the innermost reaches of the groove where the stylus couldn't reach. Additionally, the "warmth" probably is present without the pops and crackles. It is like modern tape delay emulators where they market wow flutter as a feature.

This album reminds me of my youth and the inner city blues. Funny how nothing really changes, some 30 years later. MLK had a vision of change, but not much has really changed. The rich still pit the poor against each other with the usual tropes/ same ones over and over again. While they rob us blind and we fight each other.

Yeah we had 8 years of a half black half white president and race relations actually got worse. I guess progress in history progresses and regresses. Ebbs and flows. The pendulum swings. But it is important for us to keep MLK and his dream in our hearts and minds. He was definitely "progress". Not these dividers in washington.
@shellecapos8574
@shellecapos8574 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasball1933 There was backlash from racist who just couldn’t tolerate a black man as PRESIDENT, and started the whole birthism, Muslim crap. Every time blacks are making progress the jealous racist attack. As a whole I found different races more United under Obama, never seen anything like it in this country before. As for ebbs and flows the racist are always racist that doesn’t ebb or flow. They’re just vocal in front of everyone now, and not just other racist friends, family, and people who stay silent, cuz that’s Trumps base and he was always dog whistling. Btw MLK is not the only black person who brought about progress, more currently. That includes OBAMA.
@thomasball1933
@thomasball1933 Жыл бұрын
@@shellecapos8574 Obama just continued the Bush wars. He droned more people than W. Don't put your faith in these people. I am from Maryland where Thurgood Marshall was from. He is a very big figure in this state. While MLK was in the streets, Thurgood Marshall was riding trains all night across the south teaching black people Law. He was just as important, if not more, than MLK. Both were necessary. You needed both. So I agree with you there are many, many more black people who brought about progress. I always say we owe these people a debt of gratitude, they did all the heavy lifting. All we have to do is live the dream. Just stop bickering and live the dream. I think we did make progress with integration here in MD-DC-VA in the 60's such that my generation (born in 74) was bequeathed all the hard work of the previous generations, all the "revolutions" (civil rights, sexual, communications, etc). For us racism was obviously false, we grew up in an integrated world. (Plus here in MD we have ALL the races...literally everyone from the whole planet...very cosmopolitan here...probably because of the embassies in DC). The only ones who retained their racist ways had to be taught by their parents. And those people get less and less with every generation. So it does ebb. But then we have all this "divide and rule" tactics in the media...always trying to divide us. I always said the powers that be will have to work overtime to get the next generation to hate. But it sure looks like they are working overtime to divide us! It feels like it. So back to basics...back to MLK...back to the fundamental american dream...to live in peace. I was a tour guide on the mall in dc for several years. And Jefferson is my guy, defined America. Well the Jefferson Memorial on the mall is placed such that the statue inside is facing the white house. So TJ is keeping an eye on the president. The MLK statue is facing TJ, keeping an eye on him. MLK completed Jefferson's American ideal. And MLK was a true christian, a christ-like martyr. These guys handed us this country. All we have to do is live their dream...which is pretty good. We have this rich multicultural world now. All we have to do is explore it. We learn so much from all of these cultures. I also think there is nothing wrong with one people staying among their own kind, their own culture. Nothing wrong with that. It's when you start hating other cultures that problems arise, excluding them, dehumanizing them, etc. We are the great melting pot here. But also nothing wrong with preserving your own culture either. We are a nation of immigrants. We are all from "somewhere else". But once you get here you strive for the American ideal set forth by Jefferson and MLK. The declaration of independence and the bill of rights. That is America.
