I hear that State and Revolution by Lenin provides a great intro to Marx and Engels, and I hope to get to it soon. Thanks for the other titles.

i just finished state & rev. imo it should be called "reading marx & engles w vlad" but thats definitely not a bad thing. plus w historical context of the revision going crazy in the international & the provisional gov in russia had the various "socialist" heads and such. but definitely use the footnotes like carlos said & read the texts vlad references and youll be well on your way down a wormhole o7

True! Although it is one of the most beautifully written texts, you kinda have to be used to the language to get it. I encountered that when I had my intro class read it this semester. However, in my defense, I did say the list was in no particular order lol.

Thank you comrade, great recommendations! Question about the book of Lenin’s excerpts on Marx and Engels, does it contain the essay 3 component parts of Marxism? Because imo that’s an absolutely essential text that helps to tie Marxism together. And I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised that y’all added a book on Marxist humanism into the pile. I know a lot of their number have v bad takes on foreign policy but imo moral programs and how they relate to Marx’s ideology is a very underrepresented in recommended reading lists. Can I ask what y’all think of GA Cohen, and the analytical marxists in general?

Hello comrade - yes the Marx, Engels, Lenin collection contains “The Three Sources and Three Component Parts of Marxism”. I agree, it is an absolute must read. I like Schaff a lot because he doesn’t fall into a lot of the pitfalls of people like Fromm, Anderson, Dunayevskaya, etc. Although those are all excellent to read as well, we must lend a critical eye to their attempts to equate their critiques of capitalism with the situation in the socialist camp. This is similar to the pitfalls of the Frankfurt school and basically all of ‘western Marxism’. I call this pitfall the ‘purity fetish’ - www.midwesternmarx.com/articles/a-critique-of-western-marxisms-purity-fetish-by-carlos-l-garrido Our counseling Editor, Thomas Riggins was recommended by Lukács to study Marxism-Leninism under Schaff. He said he was the only one in the west with a solid philosophical grasp of ML theory. You can already see the difference there between Schaff and some of the other Marxist humanists. In terms of analytic Marxism, I haven’t read to much into it. I’ve read some Erik Olin Wright and Rosolyn Walach Bologh (who both see themselves in the analytic Marxist tradition), but that’s about it. I think Ben Burgis is writing a book on Cohen now. I haven’t engaged with Cohen at all though.

@@MidwesternMarx there’s definitely something to be said about how analysis of Marxism-Leninism in the west requires somewhat specialized expertise, if only to avoid falling into state department traps. It’s so omnipresent that you almost can’t blame them, which is why seeing authors like who have that expertise are all the more valuable, so thank you for bringing Schaff to my attention. He’s definitely going to be very high on my ever expanding reading list! As for Cohen, if you ever get the time I really suggest checking out his book Self-ownership, Freedom, and Equality, or at least the introduction. It’s a very clear and concise examination of how a moral program can be understood in a Marxist context, as well as being a very interesting glimpse into how Marxists in the immediate aftermath of the collapse of the USSR understood their immediate tasks. The intro is also free through Amazon preview, which is always a bonus. I also think his work Karl Marx’s theory of history; a defense, is a really stellar read, but it also warrants a bit more time commitment so ymmv.

Some say that Grundrisse was the summary of Marx + Engels thought, as it was chronologically + theoretically in mid career.
