Love this version of this song, Mary delivers it like no one else can. A true artist!!

This made me really respect Bruce Springsteen as a songwriter. Everyone knows his version, Clarence Clemons, Courtney Cox dancing, its high energy...this version makes the lyrics, which are really really sad really resonate.

If angels are real...I envision they would look and sound like Mary Chapin Carpenter...she has that innocent lovely effect...an almost surreal majestic effect where I wonder if humans can really be that beautiful in heart and soul. A siren's voice that can charm you into not giving up on life...even amid a pandemic where we are loading thousands of souls into refrigerated trucks to be hauled away without a last goodbye...

With this, Mary Chapin Carpenter shows she is as great an interpreter of other's songs as she is a singer-songwriter. Check out "Downtown Train" on Hometown Girl, she makes it her own.

Yes, you're correct, Michael. She nails it, and let's not leave out Passionate Kisses, which is a Lucinda Williams song.

@@JamesHarris-hl2bm Actually, as much as I love MCC, and I do, her cover of Passionate Kisses actually prevented me from diving into her music for a long time. I'd heard good things about her, but I thought that was way too tame and smooth compared to Lucinda's version. Glad I gave Mary a 2nd look, though. She is an American treasure.

"This is a bummer song written by somebody else." For certain, It wasn't a slam ... not many slam the song's author. + She wouldn't slam a song and then do it ... do it damn well, in fact.That's a compliment .... not a slam.

To all who appreciate the "different perspective", I submit my thesis that it shows a contrast between female pathos and male pathos. But yeah, I totally agree with everyone who said it opened up the lyrics of the song. That was my experience, and the reason why I subjected my reaction to deeper scrutiny.

My answer would be to state the obvious - almost all the best songs written are songs about sadness and heartbreak, ergo, the "bummer" comment. ;)
@gailwilliams26787 жыл бұрын
It's a "bummer song" because it's about loneliness, and the desperate need to do almost anything to ease the feeling, even if it's only temporary. I remember those feelings, and actions, from the late 70s - early 80s.
@cougar246 жыл бұрын
This is the 2nd song from Born in the USA that Bruce Springsteen gave uptempo music to but the lyrics are not very upbeat. The other is the title song. I love this version of the song and I keep hoping that someday he will do an acoustic version of this song.
