the save was illegal, she was about 1 meter in front of the goal line when the ball was struck and she was going forwards, AND she dived forward before it was even struck. in the mens game, that would have to be retaken (can you expect anything else from female officials??). however, karma fixed the cheat.

the only problem i have with that save is it was no different to the Hiatti goalkeepers save against England but England got to retake it as the goalkeeper moved forward before the ball was kicked and that one wasn't retaken, but there was some good keepers in the tournament

I thought that when I saw it in real time. It's close, but her foot is in the air and forward of the line. If you stop the video as the Spanish player is kicking the ball, this is clearly seen. It should have been retaken.

This enables her to gain forward momentum before the kick is taken and still remain within the rules. It's a finely honed technique where millimetres matter. But that's football in the 21st century.

@@DHSCORD I'd be convinced from an above the goal line view, which strangely doesn't seem to exist. (But FIFA had them for pen shoot-outs) Not questioning the rule but to be able to dive forward & to the left while still leaving a trailing leg 'over' the line is pretty remarkable. If this was the case she actually had room to spare as her trailing leg is still bent as the penalty is taken.

Indeed. Iwas wondering why it was not repeated. That was so obvious. Glad it didn't change the outcome. Edit: I learned that it's enough when the foot is above the line. Therefore it can't be judged from this angle, even with the right foot clearly in the air it could still be over the line. I also saw the photo that fifa presented. A couple of centimeters of the heel of her right foot was still over the line when the ball was kicked. So while she was already half a meter or more in front of the goal, that foot poked the line and made the move legal. Close call. How people can not see that the foot is in the air is beyond me though...
