"Thirty-five-year-old Mary Halvorson's guitar playing can be challenging and at times even confrontational, but it is never conventional. A fixture in avant-garde and improvisational music circles, the New York City-based guitarist is just as likely to pick out intricate, harmonically and melodically complex lines of stunning beauty as she is to unleash a violent spray of atonal, harshly-distorted six-string noise. And she does it all with an impressive array of musicians - over the past dozen years, Halvorson has appeared on more than 70 albums, working as a bandleader, an ensemble member and a guest artist - and in a wide range of styles.” - Rolling Stone

I had a weird dream that I was at a Dillinger Escape Plan show and they invited Mary Halvorson to do a guest solo during the jazzy break of 43% Burnt. It fit near perfectly.

"Atonal" music started over 100 years ago and is still evolving. It started with orchestra instruments.
@XwpisONOMA
@XwpisONOMA 2 жыл бұрын
Music is by definition "tonal". A-tonal is simply the product of sounds happening together. but necessarily in a tonal context. That may result in an interesting and intriguing sound but not music in the strict definition of the term.

Writing songs based off improvising and finding something that sounds cool will work, but I find that when u think of a tune in ur head and try to create it on the guitar, those are the songs that really stand out and sound good.

I've always loved Guilds. I had an early 80's Guild Artist Award (new). I strung it with big flat wounds. What a tone. The back and sides on it was striking. Never really felt I was worthy of such a guitar and traded it for a Les Paul Deluxe and an amp :0Owned a Guild Mark IV and sold THAT as well (of all my past guitars, that is the one I most regret selling). I know, I know. Young and dumb. Oh yeah, had a Bluesbird, too. All great guitars.However, I did wise up. I now own a '96 Guild X170 AB Manhattan and WILL keep this one. I'll keep my D55, too. TYVM Ha ha. Keep up the great work, Mary. You do that old Guild justice

Her Guild Aristocrat sounds very much like my Guild A-150 Newark Street in blond. Basically her guitar is an upscale version, but otherwise mostly identical. Mine has a carved top and a single pickup also suspended off the end of the fingerboard so as not to have any unnecessary holes made in th acoustic body. Mine also only has a volume knob and again it's not mounted in a hole in the top plate, rather it's suspended above it and mounted to the pickguard. Again, exactly as hers. I love mine. Every piece of metal on mine is exactly the same color and shape but hers is engraved from the factory. Note the pickup and tailpiece on hers.

What kind of pedal was she using at the end to get that drop out, warbling kind of sound?
@brian_mccomedy
@brian_mccomedy 8 жыл бұрын
+Enjoy Your (Rabbit) Sounds like an expression pedal hooked up to a delay pedal of some kind? Like if the expression pedal controlled the delay time and the feedback on the delay was set to zero repeats. When you turn the delay time pot on a delay pedal while playing a note you'll get the same sound.

+Enjoy Your (Rabbit) Whatever it was, it sounded crap. Why do guitarists insist on ruining their shit by over use of effects (Watch Emily Hastings videos to hear tasteless use of reverb and delay,)? Covering up (real or imagined) inadequacies?
@brian_mccomedy
@brian_mccomedy 8 жыл бұрын
+Jan Kafka They can do what they want really, it's their sound. Also from a mixing point of view, if you play something bad with delay/reverb, it's going to make a bad sound worse, because they carry the inadequacies on for longer. It doesn't really cover anything up unless your tone is mid-heavy, in which the delay/reverb just kinda layers the inconsistencies up. Effects like Chorus/Phase/Flanger will cover up mistakes like bad intonation (in regards fretless guitar playing, or just bending out of tune) because it blurs the pitch of the note ever so slightly. Hence why a lot of 80s musicians got away with stuff. Sorry to anyone from that generation! :)

Funny how kids these days don't know anything about dissonance. They claim to hate theory, but they swear by the major scale. Enjoy life a little! Explore some stuff. Let those notes have color instead of seeing it all as black.
