I dunno. These were the days when talent was exploited to a maximum, people were cheated out of their money, and (in such an industry) drugs, though temporary, were the only retreat. We did get good music, but I suppose record label executives sought the current "overnight celebrity" trend as a way to make more money, and thus gone were the days of a talented hub hitting the waves. This is why you see otherwise garbage pail persons blowing up in a matter of a day. This is also the reason why the shelf life for any entertainer is constantly shifting lower and lower. Things will never go back to how they once were, especially with the introduction of the internet and AI.

@LarryDWilmore793 ай бұрын
Well Mary is a raw sangah not a technical singer so because of this she may not develop vocal nods (speaking from that point of time) but she will suffer with vocal fry. The difference is vocal fry is temporary but happens more often than not when your vocals are consistently being used especially if you’re a vocalist that does tours and interviews outside of your sessions point in case Mary J Blige. Vocal nodules can last for more than six months and requires lots of rest and although it don’t make you sound raspy, like vocal fry, it does limit your range and octave (s). You maybe able to access a level of head voice, a level of falsetto that it forces you to use when trying to reach high note and chest voice and it forces and it forces you to sing with your speaking voice point in case Mariah Carey. These two vocalists goes all out so Mary will sing songs that resonates with her speaking voice/Chest and nasal, thankfully she’s a soulful singer, and Mariah will be forced to sing only in head voices and chest and possibly falsetto but I think she’d rather lip-sync. Some have to wait years…so many years that it’s no point in coming back point in case Christina Aguilera and Brittany Spears. Technical singers, like Beyoncé, don’t do interviews, acting or mingle much because their voice is their sole career so they have it on reserve which is why they can always sound so crisp, clear, melodic and full of range. They don’t need the soulful emotions that Mary conveys or the high sky pitches that Mariah taps into…they simply only need the runs with a clear voice and if they don’t have that then it’s over for them point in case Whitney Houston. Mary has more options than any of em as she can rap-sing, sing-rap, speak a song or sing a speech she is cemented in her career as a diverse artist and actress, producer and writer as well as other endorsements. Vocal fry can happen real quick as you get older and so, unless they have a vocal rejuvenating remedy Mary will never sound like this ever again but is still capable of giving us great and amazing music. Others don’t have that luxury as they get older especially those in their mid 40’s and 50’s…hell, at 50+ Mary is doing hella good and looking flawlessly amazing, like the Goddess she is.

I'm here. May 2024. A few things that I noticed....First off, I just want to say this was an excellent performance of this song. From the band, the background singers and of course Mary and KC. Secondly, for those that didn't know, they were dating during this time. And tabloids had this relationship labeled as questionable at best. And that's putting it lightly. And judging from Marys body language, you can tell she was not a happy camper at the start of the song. But she quickly got in character, as only a professional should. Whatever was going on between them, she put it aside for the moment and flat out delivered on this song. Kudos to her! This song was absolutely one of my faves back in the day. It's nice to see Mary going strong and STILL putting in that work.

Just in case ya'll didn't know, that's Dave Hollister singing live background on this song and going back in forth on the part where K-Ci sings, "no one, no one." Dave was helping them sing background during this while live concert. Some folks don't know that Dave the cousin of K-Ci and Jo-Jo. I remember when I first heard "Brenda's got a baby" by Tupac. I thought it was K-Ci singing when it was Dave. At that time, they had a similar tone and sound. Still one of my favorite joints til' this day. Dave did say in an interview that at one point he was suppose to be in the group with Jodeci and he helped do some backgrounds on their first album. Would've been dope if he was in the group, that sound would've been otherworldly. They already had a unique sound; in my opinion it would've been even better with him in the group. Those live harmonies would've been tighter. But, we know things happen for a reason, I'm glad Dave did his own thing. He's one of my vocal heroes...ha!

In the 80's, the dynamic duo was Staci Lattisaw and Johnny Gill....also very powerful voices. Check out "where do we go from here"..I still get chills today listening to that song. talent like this is so rare these days.

Mary dodged a bullet with K-Ci, her heart ached for a while for him…but in time, that too passed…I ❤Mary & she deserves much happiness 🙏🏾

They both sound great but they must've had an argument before the show. The tension is very noticeable. KC treated Mary so bad. She was so in love. They were young. I'm proud of who Mary has become.

They sounded incredible together. It would have been amazing to see where their voices would have taken them in joint albums. Like Marvin and Tammy or Ashford and Simpson

It seems like he’s trying his hardest to keep a literal and figurative distance from her in this performance. He doesn’t want to lead her on or give her false hope.

The vocals though 🔥👌🏽 damn back when folks could actually REALLY sing. When was the last time we got a big vocal duet in recent years? It doesn't happen now. ❤
