I just love the difference between Julie Andrews and the rest of the women there. She is so delicate and timeless, nothing too pompous, her hair is stylish and modest at the same time, same for her dress. As opposed to the rest of the women, all sparkling dresses and big hair. Truly a lady, truly a queen.

She was still in hair and makeup for the "Sound of Music' shoot. She literally left the soundstage and the SOM set, went to her dressing room and changed into an evening gown, and was whisked by waiting Disney limo from 2Oth Century-fox into Hollywood for the premiere.

No way. Didn't know that until now. Mary Poppins however is better than Sound of Music
@Harringtonml546 жыл бұрын
Sorry, that is not true. Her last shooting day on TSOM was in early August 1964. This premiere was on August 27th. She was on a brief respite after filming POPPINS, THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY and TSOM in a row. She would next appear in what became an Emmy-nominated guest performance on THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW.

I was working at the Chinese Theater as an usher in 1964, and worked the night of the premier. Two weeks before the premier, the Chinese was playing Disney's Fantasia. At about 9 P M, on a weeknight, Mr. Disney, went to the box office, bought a $2 ticket, and gave me the ticket to tear. I had never before seen him in person, and I was excited, and enthusiastically said "Good evening, Mr. Disney! " Walt didn't like kiss asses, so his reply was a slightly annoyed "Humph". There were just a few people in the audience, and nobody seemed to notice him. I only saw him enter and leave, but he stayed not longer than 20 minutes, probably to check out the interior, as the Chinese had been beautifully remodeled and updated in the mid 1950's, and had the then state of the art screen, largest in the world, and full stereo sound, and the best projectors and projectionists. On the night of the premier, after the audience had taken their seats, Mr. Disney went to the podium to the left of the screen, and said "We're very proud of this. I hope you like our little picture." Then he thanked Technicolor for donating the cost of the premier (it was a charity fundraiser), and said he had used Technicolor exclusively since his first color short, "Flowers and Trees", yet never had more than a handshake contract to use them. The after show party was held in a huge white tent in the parking lot next door. The tent was decorated with props from the movie, including the carousel used in the animated segment of the film. The movie's chimney sweeps, in full costume and smudgy makeup, danced to "Chim-chim-chiree". Mr. Disney was drinking champagne, and spoke to whoever came up to him. The foregoing is from my memory, so I apologize in advance if I've missed some detail. By odd coincidence, I got to know Tom Hanks, who masterfully plays Mr. Disney in the Mary Poppins biopic, "Saving Mr. Banks", by way of his "Bosom Buddies" co-star, Peter Scolari. Peter was a friend and customer of my BMW car repair shop.

Saving Mr. Banks really recreated everything!! Well from Disney point of view atleast. The movie doesn't explain about the author's sad life! But it is still great!!
@NWR199110 жыл бұрын
What about the flashbacks? Sure the movie isn't highly accurate of course, in the early 60's scenes, but there are flashbacks of P.L Travers' childhood in Australia.
@NekoSamaIru10 жыл бұрын
I meant the author's child. She separated twin boys by adopting one of them. She loved the adopted son. When the son turned 17 or 18, he was in a bar and another boy who looked just like him approached him. He told him they were twins and were separated at birth and he tried to find him everywhere. The boy was deeply hurt and he never forgave P.L. Travers. Though they started talking, their relation was never the same. And the movie also doesn't say anything about how the author felt when people thought Mary Poppins belonged to Disney and hardly anyone knew her. (Well, The movie did fix it though). And it also didn't mention P.L. Travers going to Walt and saying "I like the movie but you have to get rid of the cartoons!" And Walt said it cannot be done now. I do understand why Disney wouldn't mention all these things. I mean - it just wouldn't go with the plot! But the movie is great! ~Sorry for the loooong reply!! And sorry for spelling long as loooong and making it longer!

How in the world have I never see this!!!! I noticed the title of the video. I wanted to see what it was about. My mother and I lived in Hollywood then. We used to go to every premier and parade. When I saw shots of the crowd in the video, I wondered if we were filmed. OH MY GOODNESS!!!! Well at 15:09 The woman with glasses, wearing a white sweater and black top, holding the white strap of her pocketbook is my mother Helen!!! I'm the little boy to her right, Anthony. I was 10. We went to every (then called) Santa Clause Lane Parade on Sunset Blvd then moved to Hollywood Blvd. We always waved to the crowd cameras and back then, You could run out to the cars, with Stars riding in them, and get autographs. She was a woman who had a bitter past. Mary Poppins meant a lot to her, in the end she was coaxed into signing over the rights and had to let Disney destroy her heartblood. She adopted a child and gave him everything. You also make it seem like they immediately drank themselves to death. Camillus died at 75, Anthony at 65.

Awesome to see this video of premiere of “Mary Poppins”, as if you’re right there in Hollywood at Chinese Grauman’s Chinsese Theater in 1964. Movie stars all glamorously dressed up like red carpet at the Oscars. Speaking of Oscar, Julie Andrews won Oscar for Best Actress as Mary Poppins for her very first movie role, beating Audrey Hepburn who was also nominated for Best Actress for “My Fair Lady”, the role Julie made famous on Broadway, but was denied the movie role. And Julie could sing all the songs as Eliza, whereas Audrey was dubbed. Quite interesting to see the real P.L. Travers who came to premiere, tho unescorted, as her story with Mr. Disney made famous in movie “Saving Mr. Banks”. Dame Andrews looked beautiful as did Dick Van Dyke & his family. Mr. Disney wanted Julie for Mary Poppins when he saw her on Broadway’s Camelot and Rodgers & Hammerstein wanted Julie as Maria for “Sound of Music” when they saw her as nanny Poppins. And now “Mary Poppins” has become award-winning Broadway musical. In 1964, they truly celebrated this family musical with fanfare and that the picture made everyone happy. Too bad they don’t make movie musicals anymore , but we can still enjoy them as revivals in musical theater.
@chrisnorton43827 жыл бұрын
A few factual errors. Audrey Hepburn was not nominated at the Oscars although she had been at the Golden Globes. Audrey was unfairly blamed for Julie not getting the My Fair Lady role but she braved the flak and attended the Oscars where she handed out the Best Actor award (ironically to Rex Harrison). Richard Rodgers (Oscar Hammerstein had died in 1960) had wanted Julie for the Sound of Music movie long before Mary Poppins was completed since he had worked happily with her on Cinderella back in 1957. The SOM director and screen writer were convinced to cast Julie after kindly being allowed, by Disney, to view her Mary Poppins scenes in the unfinished film at the Disney studios. They then agreed with Rodgers that she was ideal.
@jimm70985 жыл бұрын
Perhaps Travers was unescorted because she was a lesbian.
